What is an Integer?
Explanation: An integer is a whole number on the right and left side of 0 on a number line.

Example:
On the left are all integers.

Putting Integers in Order

Explanation: The number get smaller when they are going to the left side of the number line. They get bigger going to the right side. The positive numbers are bigger than the negatives. Example: Put -3,3,-6,2,-2 in order from least to greatest. It would be -6,-3,-2,2,3. You can look at the negative numbers first and smallest one is -6. You can also use a number line to help you with this.

Adding Integers with LIKE signs

Explanation: You just add normally and the sign will be the same. Example: -2+-9=? You add normally right now and you will get 11. Now just keep the sign and the answer is -11.

Adding Integers with DIFFERENT signs

Explanation: The answers sign will be the bigger numbers (without looking at the sign) sign. Then you subtract the bigger number by the smaller number and you will have your answer! Example: 6+(-5)=? The answers sign will be positive since 6 is bigger than 5. 6-5=1 and the answer will be positive 1.

Show a Subtraction Problem with Integer Tiles

Example: -7-(-3)=?
Take away

Explanation: Since they are both negatives, you should use red tiles to represent them. You put the number of tiles of the bigger number, -7. Then take away three of the tiles because you are subtracting. You will get -4.

Show a subtraction problem with a number line

Example: -5-2=? Explanation: You start at negative 5. Since you are subtracting a positive number, you go towards the left of the number line. You will end up at negative 7.

(I cant draw on the number line since its on the laptop!)

Multiplying/Dividing Integers with LIKE signs

Explanation: The answer will always be a positive when you are multiplying/dividing integers with like signs. You just multiply/divide normally. Example: 1) 9x10=? Since they are both positives, then the answer will be a positive so the answer is 90. 2) -11x-5=? They have the same signs so we know that the answer will be a positive. The answer is 55.

Multiplying/Dividing Integers with DIFFERENT signs

Explanation: The answer will ALWAYS be negative when you see different signs. You multiply/divide normally. Example: 1)-42/6=? The answer is -7 because the signs are different. 2)-25x4=? The answer is -100 because the signs are different.

A Real Life Example of Using Integers

You will have to use integers in real life. For example if you read the thermometer, theres a vertical number line with integers on it.
