Rich Gutierrez is the head football coach at Canyon High School and has been coaching for over 18 years. He discusses the defensive scheme he employs, which emphasizes simplicity, discipline, and eliminating thinking to drive reactionary habits. The defense demands double teams and substitutes less to change fronts. Each position has specific responsibilities, such as corners protecting against deep balls, the front seven functioning like linebackers, and everyone needing to be coachable and able to run. Gutierrez emphasizes technique and accountability to enable the defense to be flexible and aggressive.
