EXPECTATIONS

SUBMITTED WORK
Your name, date, and
period go in the upper
right hand corner of the
paper. If it is a
worksheet, be sure to
write your name and
date. DO NOT use
nicknames, and be sure
to use both your first
and last name. If you
used extra paper, be
sure to STAPLE your
papers.

After completing the first week, more than
2/3 of the class has an F. It is extremely
important that you are turning in all work.
You have until Wednesday to turn in all
your missing assignments from the first
week. I will be making phone calls home to
your parents that evening for those of you
who have multiple missing assignments.
Re-do Opportunity
If you did not do as well as you would have
liked on your assignments, you may re-do
them for a 10% reduction in grade. Taking
advantage of this opportunity will really
help some of you increase your grade. You
dont want to start off on the wrong foot!
MODULE 1, LESSON 4
IDENTIFYING PROPORTIONAL AND NON-PROPORTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN
GRAPHS
Objective
You will decide whether two quantities are proportional to
each other by graphing on a coordinate plane and
observing whether the graph is a straight line through the
origin. You will also study examples of quantities that are
proportional to each other as well as those that are not.
What does this mean?
You will turn the tables that weve
seen into graphs. By looking at
the graphs, you will be able to
determine whether or not the
relationship is proportional.
What is a coordinate plane?
Where is the x-axis?
Where is the y-axis?
Where is the origin?
Number the quadrants.
I (+,+)
IV (+,-) III (-,-)
II (-,+)
What does an ordered pair look like? (x, y)
Take a look at the Opening Exercise.
Now look at Example 1.
Do not fill in the blanks yet. We
will do this after we answer a few
questions about the table and
graph.
Why do you think we will only
focus on Quadrant I?
Since we are measuring or counting quantities
(number of candy bars sold and amount of money),
the numbers in our ratios will be positive. Both the
x-coordinates and the y-coordinates are positive in
Quadrant 1.
What should we label the x-axis
and the y-axis?
The x-axis should be labeled the number of candy
bars sold, and the y-axis should be labeled the
amount of money received.
Could it be the other way around?
No, the amount of money received depends on the
number of candy bars being sold. The dependent
variable should be labeled on the y-axis. Therefore,
the amount of money should be labeled on the
y-axis.
How should we note that on the
table?
The first value in each of the pairs is the x-
coordinate (the independent variable) and the
second values in each of the pairs is the y-
coordinate (the dependent variable).

How do we plot the first ratio
pair?
The first value in each of the pairs is the x-
coordinate (the independent variable) and the
second values in each of the pairs is the y-
coordinate (the dependent variable).

When we are plotting a point,
where do we start?
We start at the origin (0, 0).
How do we plot the first ratio
pair?
The relationship is 2:3, where 2 represents 2
candy bars sold, and 3 represents 3 dollars
received. From the origin, we move 2 units
to the right on the x-axis and move up 3 units
on the y-axis.
Complete the table with a
proportional relationship, and
plot the points.
What do you notice
about the plotted
points?
They are in a straight line.
Will all proportional relationships
pass through the origin?
Yes they will. For example, if a person
is paid per hour a certain amount,
when they work 0 hours, his/her pay
is 0 dollars.
Why do you think the points fall
on a straight line?
They are increasing at a constant rate.
The ____________ is _____________. unit rate equivalent
Fill this in.
The points will appear in a straight line, passing
through the origin.
Before we complete Example 2,
how do you think the graph will
look?
The points should not be in a straight
line or pass through the origin
because the relationship is not
proportional.
Complete Example 2.
Was our prediction
correct?
Yes it was!
From this example, what is important
to note about graphs of two
quantities that are not proportional?
The graph could go through the origin, but
if it does not lie in a straight line, it does
not represent two quantities that are
proportional to each other.
With your group, complete Example 3.
Be sure to note the similarities and
differences.
Is this graph proportional?
No
Complete your Exit Ticket. There
is a back side to it. Once you are
finished, you may begin your
Problem Set. If you do not finish,
it is homework. This assignment
will be due on Friday, August 22.
