MYP Unit Planner
Teacher(s) Syed Mushtaq Subject group and discipline Science (Chemistry) Unit title Unit 2 How Much, How Many, What to Expect Quantitatively MYP year 5 Unit duration (hrs) 20
Inquiry: Establishing the purpose of the unit Key concept Related concept(s) Global context Relationships
Patterns and transfer Identities and relationship Statement of inquiry Mathematical relationships are one of the fundamental parts of chemistry
Inquiry questions Factual What is the difference between empirical and molecular formula? What is percentage yield? How percentage composition is determined? Conceptual
Page 2 of 6 Solve problem relating Mass to mole Mole to mass Make calculations based on balanced chemical equations Why actual yield in a chemical process is always less than theoretical yield. Why scientists need mole for calculations Debatable One mole is an enormous number and beyond the scope of our normal life experience. Is this a best way to describe interaction at atomic level?
Objectives Summative assessment
Objectives A Explain scientific knowledge. Apply scientific knowledge and understanding to solve problems set in familiar and unfamiliar situations Analyse and evaluate information to make scientifically supported judgments.
Objective B Explain a problem or question to be tested by a scientific investigation Formulate a testable hypothesis and explain it using scientific reasoning Explain how to manipulate the variables, and Explain how data will be collected Outline of summative assessment task(s) Unit Test Criterion A
Lab investigation Design an experiment to investigate chemical reaction between lead nitrate and sodium iodide also calculate percentage yield of lead iodide? Relationship between summative assessment task(s) and statement of inquiry Students will be able to recall informations and apply this information into familiar and unfamiliar situations. The Part of the unit is covering higher level thinking skills and students will be able analyze and evaluate information to make scientific judgments
Students will design a process and calculate percentage yield. Students will be provided with two chemicals compounds. Based on properties of these compounds, they will be able to outline and explain a testable hypothesis based on the analysis of different variables, such as formation of precipitate The design must include how to manipulate these variables and how
Page 3 of 6 Design scientific investigations.
Objective C Present collected and transformed data Interpret data and explain results using scientific reasoning Evaluate the validity of a hypothesis based on the outcome of the scientific investigation Evaluate the validity of the method Explain improvements or extensions to the method.
. Criterion B all strands Criterion C all Strands
sufficient data will be collected. A logical, complete and safe method is expected.
The students will collect and interpret data, and will calculate percentage yield. Students will explain the results of data based scientific. Students will also identify weakness in their method and suggest improvements in design in their lab reports. Approaches to learning (ATL)
Reflective skills: reconsidering the process of learning: choosing and using atl skills Organizational skills : managing time and tasks effectively Creative thinking: gathering novel ideas and considering new perspectives. Action: Teaching and learning through inquiry Content Learning process Knowledge Content Knowledge Define the mole concept Use mole concept to calculate number of particles in a material. Learning experiences and teaching strategies Lab activity: Reactions between lead nitrate and sodium iodide. ( This is an extension of the demonstration that they saw in last unit) Using Triangle activity Triangle poster will be constructed by students to understand mole calculations easily.
Page 4 of 6 Calculate percent composition. Differentiate between empirical formulas and molecular formula. Recall law of conservation of mass. Use the law of conservation of mass to write and balance chemical equations Solve stoichiometric problems to include determination of mass relationships between reactants and products. Describe limiting reactant. Apply limiting reactant concept to solve complex stoichemetric problems. Define percentage yield. Suggest ways to improve percentage yield.
Skills Information retrieval Listening & observing Scientific reading Data representation Scientific writing Knowledge presentation
Worksheets of variable difficulty level Lab activity- Calculating water of crystallization in common hydrate PowerPoint presentations Group discussions Graphic organisers Sticiometric ratio Lab activity Introduction to titrations Formative assessment Students will perform laboratory Investigations to collect, organize and present data. Then students will design an extension to the method or analyse another possible reaction for experimenting. Worksheets Mole calculations, determining empirical and molecular formulas, Stoichiometric calculations. Classroom questions based on students abilities Differentiation Instruction Opportunities to participate in different activities during the unit Basic information delivered to the student using media resources Use of the ICT resources room for simulations and information related to the topic Visit to a manufacturing plant to observe specific processes and receive Sciences teacher support material. ESL students could take photographs of a demonstration or experiment showing the steps and stages of each process. They can then create a cartoon first in their own language and then translate this into the language of instruction. Students with learning support requirements could be helped in building equations if they are given a

Template A for struggling students (No mention of variables) Template B for Average Students ( variables explained) Templates C- for high achievers ( variables not explained) Two different options to present criterion D task Written task: 8001200 words Multi-media task: 58 minutes Extension exercise: A challenging worksheets on mole calculations, Molecular formula determinations and stichiometric calculations involving limiting reactants
Resources Class working environment with resources: internet access/multimedia resources (10 hours) Laboratory working environment with different materials/reagents and resources, and internet access/multimedia resources. Group working: 23 students per group; collaborative work at all times (6hours) Visit to aluminium extraction plant: (35hours)
Reflection: Considering the planning, process and impact of the inquiry Prior to teaching the unit During teaching After teaching the unit
Page 6 of 6 This unit was introduced after realizing that chemistry students in DP do struggle a lot in chemical calculations. This unit will help the build strong mathematical base and will ensure their smooth transitions to Diploma program. Experiments where students are needed to calculate percentage yield of their own process will help to build strong manipulative skills among students. The contents, worksheets, lab investigations and assessments are tailored in such a way that students become more Balanced and Reflective
