Alzheimers As A Whole
What is Alzheimers?
This is a mental deterioration that can
happen to middle or old aged people. This
is due to generalized degeneration of the
brain. This is the most common cause of
premature senility.
What causes Alzheimers?
The gradual loss of brain function
that characterizes Alzheimer's dis-
ease seems to be due to two main
forms of nerve damage.
1. Nerve cells develop tangles
(neurofibrillary tangles)
2. Protein deposits known as beta-
amyloid plaques build up in the
brain.
Symptoms
1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
2. Challenges in planning or solving
problems
3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at
home, at work or at leisure
4. Confusion with time or place
5. Trouble understanding visual images
and spatial relationships
6. New problems with words in speaking
or writing
7. Misplacing things and losing the ability
to retrace steps
8. Decreased or poor judgment
9. Withdrawal from work or social activi-
ties
10. Changes in mood and personality
Diagnostic Tools
There is really no specific test
today that confirms you have
Alzheimer's disease. Your doc-
tor can make a judgment about
whether Alzheimer's is the
most likely cause of your
symptoms based on the infor-
mation you provide and results
of tests that can help clarify
the diagnosis. Alzheimer's
disease can be diagnosed with
complete accuracy only after
death, when microscopic ex-
amination of the brain reveals
the characteristic plaques and
tangles.
Medications/Treatments
Treatments: There is cur-
rently no treatments for Alz-
heimer's, But drug and non-
drug treatments may help with
both cognitive and behavioral
symptoms.
Medications:
1. Donepezil (Aricept) is ap-
proved to treat all stages of
Alzheimer's.
2. Rivastigmine (Exelon) is
approved to treat mild to
moderate Alzheimer's.
