Political system
Government Overview
The French political system is a republic. In this republic
they have an executive and legislative branch, much like
what we have here in the United States. They have an
executive branch, judicial branch and a legislative
branch. The
executive branch
consists of a
president and a
prime minister. In
the legislative
branch there are the
senate and the
National Assembly.
The judicial branch has the Council of State.
President and Prime Minister
Francois Holland is the current president of France. He
was elected in 2012 and is currently serving his five year
term. Manuel Valls is the current prime minister of
France. The president appoints the prime minister, is in
charge of the
cabinet, and is
commander-
in-chief. The
prime minister
watches over
what the
government
does and is the
implementer
of the laws.
The two of these leaders together create the executive
branch. They are the ones who are in charge of the
country. They also are face for the country. The President
is usually the first person you think of for the politics of a
country
The Legislative Branch
The main purposes of the legislative branch are similar to
those of Americas. They pass votes on the budget, keep
an eye on the executive branch, and aid in passing bills.
The legislative branch in France is broken down into the
senate and the National Assembly. In the National
Assembly, there are 577 seats. In the senate there are
331.
Judicial Branch
The judicial branch are the people who enforce the laws
that have been made. They consist of the District Court,
the Commercial Court, The Court of Cassation, and the
Court of Appeals. Together they create peace harmony
across France.
The Party
System
There are many
political parties
in France.
Some of the
main ones
include the
socialist party, which is on the left, along with the
communist party. There are also the Democratic Party
and the Conservative party on the right. They are all
parties that are chosen to be voted for in the French
Political System.
