Cold weather complements Snow Day in La Coste Friday

Kelly Eisenbarger
Staff Writer
It was almost cold enough
for a real dusting of snow when
La Coste brought out the annual
snow slide last Friday.
City Administrator George
Salzman was at the helm loading kids up and sending them
down the surprisingly fast slide.
Covered head to toe in the
mud coming off the bottom of
the inner tubes after their trip
around the snow Salzman wasnt

fazed at all. He was just excited

to get the kids back up again so
he could try one more time to
see if his oops its stuck! prank
would work.
Seven-year-old
Adam
Rodriguez from La Coste was
having a blast building a miniature snowman.
Its my first time seeing
snow. I wish it would really
snow all the time. Rodriguez
said.
Decidedly smaller than last

year the event had a decent

sized turnout. The kids would
get a quick fill of the slide then
head back home with parents
to warm up for the evening.
Despite some not exactly weather appropriate gear, ranging
from shorts to gloveless hands
forming snowballs, each child
had a beaming smile on their
face.
There were still small piles
of snow left until the next afternoon. Maybe next year a snow

blower wont even be necessary.

Mireles Ice chipped up
the snow and brought out the
slide and inner tubes. The ice
company has found a way to
expand their business and keep
it up during the slower winter
months
Traditionally we do the
majority of our business in the
summer but we have to keep our
guys employed, our ice makers
making ice and our trucks on
the road, owner and snow pro

Jesse Mireles said.

Mireles told of the first time
they attempted their snow parties.
It was at Discovery School
in San Antonio where we hand
crushed ice into hundred pound
tubs all night, Mireles said.
Since then the company has
gone through a few iterations
of the handmade snow slide to
blow the crushed ice onto made
out of a flat bed trailer. They now
take their bagged ice and crush

it into big industrial snow blowers for 4,000lbs to over 100,000

lbs worth. Theyve gone on to
do snow parties for cities, private Christmas parties, Frozen
themed parties and more.
Kids really enjoy it and its
the most rewarding thing we
do all year being able to provide
such fun for the kids, Mireles
said.

time around the little ones had a chance to play

Poteet PD investigating freak car accident

Luz Moreno-Lozano
Staff Writer
Poteet police are still investigating an accident after a
vehicle was found overturned
in a creek. Police Chief Plutarco
Castro said they received a
phone call at about 5:30p.m.
on Sunday afternoon. A man

was jogging along School

Drive and looked over the rail
and saw a car upside down in
the creek.
Apparently the accident
had been there for a while, but
we dont know for how long,
Castro said. The best we can
tell for now is that he was

heading east on School Drive

and some how lost control of
the car and ended up in the
creek.
The man was identified as
35-year-old Juan Gaitan Jr.
from Charlotte. Castro added
that the man had not been
reported missing and they

were not sure what the cause

of the accident was. His family
was notified that night.
It took until about midnight
to clear the creek in Poteet.
Police are still investigating
the case and hope to find out
where the accident started and
how he ended up in the creek.
