Read the blog post from the PRB about Population Pyramids and do the
following:
a. Compare the Population Pyramid for Zambia and for Japan
(clickable links in the text). What are the different conclusions that
can be drawn by looking at total numbers vs. percentages?
Zambia: Zambia has many more people starting at 0-4 years of age for both
males and females, and then the numbers drop as the age increases. I can
tell that the young groups of this population are healthier and better off than
the older group of the population. The younger people of this Bureau are
increasing, the adults and older people are having many children.
Japan: Just like Zambia, the males and females in the population for japan
increase and decrease at the same rate. The middle-aged population have
many more people than the young and the old population of Japan. It seems
to me that the greater number of adults are not having as many children as
the population in Zambia.

c. Create Pyramids for China, India, US, Germany and South Africa
for both the current year and for 2050. (Select Report: Population
Pyramid Graph, Select Year: 2014 & 2050, click Submit)

1. In 2015, China has many more middle aged people than it will in 2050.
2. In 2050, China will have less of the young population, women will start
having less children.
3. The population around the age of 50 will stay about the same
throughout the years.

1. A similarity between the year of 2015 and 2050 in India, is that the
population shows the same pattern.
2. In 2050, the population is believed to have more people, but show the
same pattern.

1. The population seems to get larger in 2050 than the population right
now (2015)
2. The population for males and females are closer together in 2050 than
the males and females in 2015.

1. There more females and males in 2015 than there will be in 2050.

1. The population for both females and males in 2015 drop significantly
starting at age 30 in 2015.
2. The male population will be greater than the female population in 2050.
3. In 2015, the male population is a lot less than there will be in 2050.
3. We watched the first segment of World in the Balance, a case study
about Indias population (0-23:00). Describe the population issues India
must address regarding high birth rates, status of women and poverty.
What does their population pyramid tell you about what needs to be done
in the future to support their population adequately?
Men and women are treated very differently. Women are basically bossed around by
their husbands and the men in their family. The husbands of these women decide
and tell their wife when, and how many kids they want. The women dont really get
any say. The population is increasing by a lot because these women are having lots

of babies, close together in age. They are running out of room to live and raise their
children.
