Splash Wiltshire provides a programme of FREE

positive activities during school holidays
for young people aged 9-16 who are facing
challenges in their lives.

The charity is in its 25th year and

supports 200-300 vulnerable
young people each year. Splash
has recently merged activities
with Community First and we
are very excited and proud

that it is now under our

youth arm with Youth
Action Wiltshire.
Splash projects include
outdoor activities
(including some
overnight), sport, art and
music. Activities are
aimed to improve young
peoples self-esteem and
confidence, encourage
positive attitudes, improve
social and team working
skills and reduce antisocial behaviour.
If you are in contact with
young people who would

NEWS
Wiltshire Council - Community
Led Model Article
By Kevin Sweeney Area Manager
Wiltshire Council Early Help Service

Wiltshire Council has introduced a

new model for delivery of youth work and
positive activities for young people. We
have created new posts for each Area
Board, a Community Youth Officer (CYO)
their role is to work with young people,
partners and the Area Board to identify
what the needs of local young people are
and then to work with all these partners
to make it happen. The Council has also

earmarked funding for each Area Board

which must be spent on creating positive
activities for young people aged 13- 19;
young people must be central in deciding
how this money can be spent and more
details on this can be found by contacting
your local CYO. The CYO is also there
to support volunteers and organisations
who may already be working with young
people or believe they would like to create
some opportunities by providing advice,
support and professional guidance to build
the communitys capacity to deliver more
services.
We have set up a Local Youth Network
(LYN) in each Area Board, this will be
for any individual, group or organisation
who want to work together to coordinate
positive activities, share best practice and

make sure what is being provided meets

the needs of local young people. The
work of the wider LYN will be led by the
LYN Management Group which will have
representatives from the Area Board, other
key partners and crucially must involve
young people. Young people can chair
these meetings and in time we would like
to see as many LYN Management Groups
with a young person as chair as possible,
as that would be clear evidence that
decisions are being led by young people.
The LYN Management Group can make
recommendations on projects/positive
activities which it believes meets the needs
of local young people to the Area Board
for a final decision and in time we hope to
see lots more activity and opportunities for
young people across the whole of Wiltshire.

Young Leader

NAME:
Elley Timmins
What Club are you involved with?

Youth Action Wiltshires Credits 4 Young People programme.

How did you get involved with being a young leader?
I was a young person on the programme who really enjoyed it and wanted
to give something back to the project. I completed some young leaders
training and then started to help.
What type of activities do you help lead?
I have helped lead Day Sports Leaders courses, supported young people during
First Aid courses and help groups plan and complete their social action projects.
Whats the best thing about being a young leader?
Its really rewarding seeing how the young people can develop new skills. I
also like the fact I can have a positive influence on the young people and they
see me as a positive role model.
What one piece of advice would you have for other young leaders?
Dont be afraid, go for it and dont hold back.
How have you benefitted from being a young leader? I have gained
confidence, improved my social skills and am definitely more patient and
understanding.
What training would help develop your skills as a young leader?
Training to find out more about mental health and how to support young
people with mental health issues.
