Outline:
1. Defining packed bed columns and
understanding their use in the
industry.
2. Theory and Background.
3. Experiment Procedure and
Apparatus
4. Discussion of experimental data.
5. Conclusion and summary.

Objective:
Measure the amount of ammonia
absorbed at varying air and water flow
rates.
Use the collected data to develop
correlations for the height of a
transfer unit for the packing used in
the scrubber.
Data needed for successful scale up to
the production scale unit.

What is Absorption?
Transfer of one or more
species from the gas
phase to a liquid solvent.
Used for: separation of
gas mixtures, removal of
impurities, or recovery of
desired chemicals.
Process occurs in
countercurrentflows in
packed beds or trayed
towers.

Packed Bed
The purpose of Packed
beds is to increase the
interfacial area.
The packing material
could be made up of
objects likeRaschig
rings or else it can be
a specifically
designed.
Withstand corrosive
fluids.
