Developmental Stages Outline (2nd Grade)

1. Intellectual Development:
Is able to determine the difference between right and left.
Understand time and the days of the week.
Regularly have a problem with reversing letters (ps
become qs)
Will be able to understand and manipulate symbols related
to concrete objects.
Begin to understand other peoples points of view.
Begin to use logical thinking.
When comparing two objects student will be able to tell the
difference in number, length, and volume.
Have a growing attention span.
Are in the beginning stages of learning the concept of
money.
Begin to develop hobbies and skills.
Understand the concept of being fair or unfair.
Uses a vocabulary of several thousands of words.
2. Physical Development:
Continue to loose teeth and developing permanent teeth.
Girls are more developed than boys.
Fine motor development. (Visible in handwriting and
drawings.)
Improvement in hand and eye coordination.
Able to tie shoe laces without assistance.
Ability to write own name.
Have developed a good sense of balance.
Have the ability to catch small objects.
May feel awkward due to growing limbs.
Enjoy testing muscle strength and skills.
3. Psychological and/of Emotional Development:
Have the desire to be recognized for their work.
Have a strong desire to perform well.
Want to be with friends more often.
Often think of things as being either black or white.
May seek sense of security in groups.

Sensitive to evaluation of adults.


Dont like disruption of routine; child likes structure.
Child compares self to others and may be self-critical.
May have low self esteem and tend to worry more.
Understands the difference between right and wrong.
