This week in FLK-3

We Celebrated Alice in Wonderland St. Mark style!!

Congratulations to our very own Miss Evans for

directing such a showcase of St. Mark talent!!
Please Note: A reminder that we will travel to Forest City Church on Monday
April 27 to enjoy the Canada Arts production of BEANSTOCK. Please ensure
your child has a pocket snack to take.
In Language: We learned the story line of Alice in Wonderland and discussed how
our daily occurrences are sometimes relived in our dreams. We wondered why
Alice would dream about a white rabbit, a grinning cat, a caterpillar turned
butterfly, etc!! After seeing the play, we discussed and then wrote about our
favourite characters. As you can (sort of) see above, this was awesomely done!!
We played Pin the Tail on the Cheshire Cat, made a growing Alice and painted the
roses red!
In preparation for BEANSTOCK on Monday, we learned the story of Jack and the
Beanstock and decided we WOULD want someone like Jack to be our friend.

We reviewed some syllables, middle sounds and matched pictures to words.

Dalien the Alien has had successful sleepovers and has learned much on his trip to
earth! We are enjoying our class book as proof! He is now returned safely to his
parents and his brother, Calien.
For this final round of Star Days, we will be doing a Surprise Bag. Your child will
bring the surprise bag home, place an object in it, write 3 clues to describe it and
draw a picture of it. Bringing it back to school, we will use the 3 clues to try to
guess the object. Nathan did a stellar job today! He brought a London Knights
foam finger. His clues were: 1. Its green 2. You can put your hand in it (Lily
thought it might be a NOSE!) and 3. It has a Knights helmet on it. Needless to say,
we were unable to guess what was in the Surprise Bag!!!!....but we had a blast not
guessing!!
Miss Mason had us cast our vote for our favourite Blue Spruce book. We got to
vote in a REAL voting booth! Oh, that Miss Mason! Our class voted our
favourite book as being The Highest Number in the World. In 2 weeks, we will find
out how the rest of Canada voted!
Gym: We continued working on our DanceFest dance routine..and added in a new
twist with the music!!
Religion: We discussed that we are STILL in the Season of Easter, which will end
with Pentecost Sunday in late May.
Science : In keeping with Jack and the Beanstock, we discovered that seeds need
water to break open to allow the root to begin growing. We put bean seeds in a wet
paper towel on the window and will observe. We put more seeds in wet soil on the
window to observe as well.
In keeping with Alice in Wonderland, we discussed that caterpillars become
butterflies. In May, we will observe first-hand the transformation of caterpillars
to butterflies.
In Art: we made cookiesjust like in Alice! In fact, we sang Happy Birthday
while we created and then made a lovely birthday cake with the plastic cauliflower
for Miss Evans! Mmmmmm!

In Music, Drama and Dance: Alice in Wonderland continued to be alive and well in
the classroom this week! Dance and Gym were one and the same this week.
In Mathematics: We completed probability. Individual assessments are in
mailbags. We moved onto shapes first 2-D. We decided that shapes have sides,
points and are closed. We found squares, rectangles, triangles and circles in our
class.
In Personal and Social Development: As Director of Alice in Wonderland, Miss
Evans continued to pull the play together this week. Again, we had Miss Martin
helping us in the class. I am pleased to see how flexible the children are with such
changes. There is no doubt that we groove best when we are all together, but the
children coped very well with the changes of the last few weeks. On a personal
note, it allowed me to see a few children through a different lens and Im sure a
few of the children felt that way about me too! It was all good! It seems we all rely
on Miss Evans for different things!
In Inquiry/Directed Play: The play appeared to change this week to whole group
play. Many of the children would work together. Several remained immersed in
making Pokemon drawings and then we moved on to working together to build
stores or McDonalds franchises. We wrote signs, menus, directions, etc!
