This week in FLK-3

We said Good-Bye and Good Luck Miss M

And
We said Hello and Welcome Back to Miss Evans
In Language: We worked in smaller homogeneous groups again. Some of us
reviewed the reading buddies studied so far Lips the Fish, Stretchy the Snake,
Eagle Eye, Flip the Dolphin and Skippy the Frog. We practiced Skippy in more
detail and decided that, to use Skippy, we must think what makes sense, what
LOOKS right ( is it a big word or a small word ?) and use the beginning sound!
Others worked on learning the sounds of the letters and the letter names. The
rest of us worked on finding said letter sounds in words.either at the beginning or
end or in the middle.
We found out that Officer Bosco, the Police Dog who visited our class, severed an
artery while on duty and is convalescing. We wrote him Get Well letters.
We worked on rhyming words distinguishing whether a word rhymes with a target
word or not. We all read individually with either Miss Evans, Mrs. Hennessy or Mrs.
Hickey.
Miss Evans read us some new books from the Knuffle Bunny series.
Our Star Student this week was Tom. Tom brought his train for his secret show n
share item. Tom was a diligent leader! Well done, Tom!
Beginning with Sammy on Tuesday, we will have a DOUBLE STAR student every day.
They need not bring anything. They will act as Leader for the day. Please check the
calendar with your child for their day.
Gym: Miss Evans taught us a new game called Huckle Buckle. It REALLY made us
listen!!!! Tom also made a fantastic Octopus!!!

In Religion: We celebrated the Spring nature around us and, in particular, Gods
wisdom in creating life cycles of the various animals and plants.
Science: We moved the nasturtiums upstairs to germinate in peace.
The Hickey Tadpole Hunters captured four HUGE tadpoles at a nearby creek. We
have observed them all week and noticed that three of them have front legs and
that they all break the surface of the water every so often. Hmmmmm. We have
also observed that their mouths open and close. Hmmmmmm. We studied the
stages of the life cycle of the frog.
Next week we will begin a new seed study. We have been provided with 60 tomato
seeds. 30 are labeled T and 30 are labeled V. We dont know anything other than
some of the seeds in the study were in outer space for 22 months.
In Fine Motor Development: Mrs. Hennessey continues to work with several
children in small groups to increase fine motor strength and dexterity as well as
gross motor strength. She is also working with small computer groups in the
Library. Some are keyboarding and others are practicing specific skills they need
more drill with.
In Art: This week Miss Evans had the children use potatoes and paint to make
trees. This will be part of a study of trees and how they change with the various
seasons. They also read It Looked like Spilt Milk (which is about various shapes
that LOOK like spilt milk, but are, in fact, cloud shapes) and then made their own
Spilt Milk pictures using white paint on blue paper. The best part was when each
child identified what their own Spilt Milk resembled!!!
In Music, Drama and Dance: There was LOTS of impromptu classroom drama
In Mathematics: We revisited patterning. We defined it, we decided if models fit
our definition or not, and we looked at patterns in nature. Huh! It appears the
lifecycle of the frog is a PATTERN!!!!

In Personal and Social Development: Miss Evans explicitly revisited the STOP
THINK and DO system. Whether it was due to the full moon, or all the excitement
caused by the goings on this week, emotions ran high and many of us forgot to use
the STOP THINK and DO to problem solve by ourselves.

In Inquiry/Directed Play: The over-riding theme this week was Inspector or
Investigator. Miss Evans watched during clean up and then nominated a Cleaning
Inspector and a Deputy. These worthy cleaners inspected the class (using
binoculars specially designed to spot things not put away properly or in the wrong
spot) and called on children to make it right !
This caused a surge at the art table! There was suddenly a glut of knock off
cleaning binoculars in the classroom!
After working with some shaving cream as a vehicle for practicing letters and
sounds, Miss Evans put A LOT in the empty water table. The children had a blast
exploring with it.
