CO2: Solve the stress and
strain in structural members
ASSIGNMENT 2
subjected to torsion loads

1.

2.

(a) From Figure 1, determine the torque,

T, that can be applied to a solid shaft of
20-mm diameter without exceeding an
allowable shearing stress of 80 MPa.
(b) Solve Part a, assuming that the solid
shaft has been replaced by a hollow shaft
of the same weight and with an inner
diameter equal to half of its own outer
diameter.

Knowing that an 8-mm-diameter hole has

been drilled through each of the shafts
AB, BC, and CD in Figure 2, determine
(a) the shaft in which the maximum
shearing stress occurs,
(b) the magnitude of that stress.

Figure 2
3. In Figure 3, the allowable shearing stress
is 100 MPa in the 36-mm-diameter steel
rod AB and 60 MPa in the 40-mmdiameter rod BC. Neglecting the effect of
stress concentrations, determine the largest
torque that can be applied at A.

4.

In Figure 4, two solid shafts are connected

by the gears shown. A torque of
magnitude T = 900 Nm is applied to shaft
AB. Knowing that the allowable shearing
stress is 50 MPa and considering only
stresses due to twisting, determine the
required diameter of
(a) shaft AB,
(b) shaft CD.

5.

(a) For the aluminum pipe shown (G = 27

GPa), determine the torque T0 causing an
angle of twist of 2.
(b) Determine the angle of twist if the
same torque T0 is applied to a solid
cylindrical shaft of the same length and
cross-sectional area.
