Honoured, a century on
By Jessica Howard
The book COIMADAI 129 was launched by Tom Cannon at the Coimadai Memorial Park Opening and Dedication.
Photo Helen Tatchell
When Thomas Joseph Cannon enlisted as reinforcement for the 4th Light Horse
in 1915, he would never
have imagined his story to
be published in a book 100
years later.
Nor would he have imagined his son to be the one to
launch it.
Coimadai 129, the 400-page
book dedicated to Coimadai
and District War volunteers,
was launched by Thomas
Cannons son, also named
Thomas, at the official opening ceremony of the Coimadai Memorial Park on June
27.
Standing before hundreds
of local community members, Mr Cannon offered his
congratulations to the editors of the book, which told
the story of his late father
and the 128 other Coimadai
and district residents who
enlisted in the First World
War.
It is an immense job to
gather information about so
many people one hundred
years after the event, and

Celebrations
begin
NAIDOC week (5-12 July) started in
Moorabool with a small gathering witnessing
a flag raising and smoking ceremony in
Bacchus Marsh on Sunday.
The Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander flags were raised before a Welcome
to Country by Wadawurrung Uncle Bryon
Powell.
It started off as a day celebration, now a
week. There is so much to do and people to
see to celebrate, he said.
Moorabool Mayor Paul Tatchell said it was
time to stand together as one.

of traffic and concerns about
heavy vehicle movements.
A truck delivering fuel and
leaving the site, will take up
all of Bennett St if turning
left from Gell St into Bennett St. Kerbs will be damaged and there would be
issues with vehicles coming
out of nearby childcare centres and the senior citizens;
we say there is a conflict of
what is proposed and what
is acceptable, he told the
meeting.
Cr Sullivan pointed out that
trucks would only use the
service station if a fast flow
pump was installed; and the
speaker on behalf of the applicant said that there would
not be one.
Mr Hawkins said that
building the 24/7 business
opposite a residential area
would impact on the amenity of the neighbourhood
with lights, noise and traffic,
adding the applicant seeks
to have two trees on Bennett
St removed to make signage
more visible.
Meanwhile, objector Ron
Smethursts address was
met with applause from the
public gallery.
There are kindergartens,
senior citizens and a medical centre in close proximity; 136 buses travel up and
down Bennett St each weekday. Where are the reports

Vancouver For Foodies
Gourmet Food Truck Tours
When you think of street food, you imagine bustling markets in Asia where
vendors cook using family recipes and local delicacies, like deep fried
tarantula, boarder between novelty and insanity. However, the rise of the
food truck has brought street eats to cosmopolitan cities such as Vancouver,
giving a gourmet makeover to roadside cuisine.
With over 100 food trucks in Vancouver,
these staples of the street corners quickly
became popular and now tours of the food
trucks let tourists sample the culturally
diverse offerings. One such company is
Vancouver Foodie Tours, which runs the
Worlds Best Food Truck Tour - a culinary
journey of food tastings spaning two hours.
Think of it as a progressive lunch and as its
on foot, so the calories almost dont count.
Vancouver is home to the third largest
concentration of food trucks, surpassed
only by New York and Portland respectively.
The history of the scene in Vancouver is
an interesting tale, with the citys mayor
championing food truck culture after a trip
to NYC and now street food vending forms
part of the citys plan for a sustainable food
system. You will learn all about the rise of the
food truck as the experienced guides fuse in
interesting facts about the city on the tour.
The Worlds Best Food Truck Tour starts
on Burrard St beside Japadog food cart,
which pioneered food trucks in Vancouver.
Started in 2005 by a Japanese couple after
they immigrated to Canada, the Japadog
empire now includes multiple carts and
a store in the city. As the name would
suggest, Japadog is a Japanese hot dog cart
best known for its signature hotdog, the
terimayo, an unusual combination of teriyaki
sauce, mayo and seaweed sprinkled on top.
Their wasabi mayo packs a punch and is not
to be missed.
Moving on from Japanese inspired hot dogs,
the tour also takes you to Soho Road Naan

Rebuilding community
after Cyclone Pam
By Jessica Howard
After more than a decade
of pottery making it seems
only natural for Blair Angelo
to share his skills with the
rest of the world.
The Bacchus Marsh artist
left for Vanuatu on Sunday,
where he will teach pottery classes on the island of
Malekula.
The program will aid in recovery efforts for the island
nation, which was battered
by Cyclone Pam in March of
this year.
Mr Angelo, 61 said the aim
of the program was to help
locals set up a cottage industry whilst rediscovering the
lost art of pottery.

Work on the Bacchus Marsh
Racecourse Reserve Committee of Managements
submission to a draft masterplan is progressing nicely,
according to Chairperson
Pat Griffin.
Mr Griffin said that the
committee is working with
the user groups as well as
Moorabool Shire Council to
develop the submission in
particular, concerns around
the staging of the development and what aspects will
happen when.
Im pretty confident that
council will take what we
say on board, every indica-
things.
Mr Griffin also commented
on recent reports about the
Pony Clubs future.
Theyve been based at
the racecourse for nearly 50
years I believe and theyre
going to be there at least another 50 years.
Theyre a long-term valued
user, theyre a big club and
theyve done great improvements at the racecourse over
the years, and theres never
any question that any of the
user groups are going to be
disadvantaged by this - over
my dead body.
The draft plan is open to
submissions until Thursday
30 July.
Drug
treatment
to expand
By Kate Taylor
A $200,000 funding boost
will be used by Djerriwarrh
Health Services to help ice
addicts.
The additional state government funding will be
used to expand treatment
services and support families who are battling with
a family member using
methamphetamines.
The money is part of a total package of $24.6 million
to expand treatment ser-
Methamphetamines are
highly addictive and people
who use ice often need considerable support to break
the habit.
Djerriwarrh Health Services currently provides alcohol and drug counselling
services in both Melton and
Moorabool as well as youth
counselling services.
$200,000 was also awarded
to Ballarat Health Services.

Disease comes
in threes
By Jane Gardner
Two years ago, just two
days before Christmas, Ballarat parents, Belinda (nee
Phelps) and her husband
Leigh Shorter received devastating news. Two of their
three boys, Max (5) and Will
(4) had been diagnosed with
an incurable and ultimately
fatal form of Muscular
Dystrophy. They were completely shattered. As Belinda
says, Everything we ever
dreamed of for our boys had
been taken away. Not only
from us, but from them too.
Then, just 18 months later,
another cruel blow was
delivered. Their third and
youngest son Hudson (2)
also had the disease. Their
world was again turned upside down.
Our hearts were, and still
are breaking for our boys
and what they will have to
endure, says Belinda.
Savannah has a new little brother, Taylor James StoreyMurray. Born to Melton parents Claire and Tyson, Taylor
arrived on Sunday 28 June at 7.31am weighing 4kg.

The Municipal Early Years
Plan 2015-21 has been
adopted by Moorabool Shire
Council.
Councillors voted to adopt
the plan at the July council
meeting with West Ward
Councillor Tom Sullivan
supportive of the plan, but
raising some objections.
Its supposed to be a plan,,,
it reads more like a thesis!
he told the meeting.
Theres a lot of good stuff
in there but can we get rid
of the chaff and get straight
to the grain?
East Ward Councillor Dave
Edwards said he supports
the plan.
It is a really good starting
point, he told the meeting.
Councillors also thanked
other organisations involved
in developing the plan.
The six-year local area plan
provides a future vision and
strategic direction for the
municipality in the development, enhancement, coordination and planning of services and infrastructure for
families with children aged
from birth to 12 years.
The plan was put out for
public feedback in April,
with extensive responses being included in the final plan
adopted by councillors.

Dear Editor,
I attended the Senate Select
Committee on Wind Turbines at a public meeting
in Melbourne on June 9th.
As the Senate is the highest
level of Federal Government
in Australia, I felt it was an
important event, especially
in the view of my personal
interest in the outcome.
A wind energy company
holds a permit to build a 107
turbine wind farm in this
shire and five are to be built
close to our dwelling.
The Senate enquiry has
uncovered what is a litany
of poor planning, complete
lack of knowledge and indifference to any concerns
that non-host neighbours of
wind energy facilities have.
The aim of the Victorian Labor Government to facilitate
the building of a large number of wind farms has blinded them to pleas of their constituents for a precautionary
approach to be adopted.
Although the Moorabool
Shire put in a submission
and were listed to speak at
the enquiry, they did not
attend, in contrast to the

Another solid win for the
Senior Blues at home but at
half time the coach was not
happy with a 13 goal lead.
Coach Mark Williams was
upset that the Blues had
not treated their opponents
with respect and not given
a total commitment to the
challenge. Up forward Zac
Peoples was untroubled by
his opponent and ended up
with six majors, Williams
booted five. The Blues had
13 individual goal kickers
including Ryan Bongart in
his first senior game. The
Blues remain in the eight just
behind Springbank. Next
week the Blues venture to
Rokewood.

Ballan Netball
Round 11 v
Carngham-Linton
13&Under B
Carngham def Ballan
13&Under
A solid effort from the girls
side saw Ballan win 28-5.
Defenders Maddie Alcock,
Bethany Boland and Mia
McConnell made turn over
after turnover, but despite
their greatest effort the
Ballan attack line couldnt
always capitalise. Anais
Clifford and Erin Vella were
once again versatile, proving
they can play any position
on the court.
15&Under
Carngham 18 defeated Ballan. Best on court - Cate
Lidgett.
17&Under
A very low scoring first
quarter wasnt surprising
after both teams found it difficult to settle into such an
intense match. It was goal
for goal most of the game,
with all players putting in
100% effort.
Final scores Ballan 19 lost
to Carngham-Linton 23.
Best on Court - Tahneisha
Clifford.
C Grade
Excellent defensive pressure
from Megan Mullane and
Eliza Rivette saw Ballan extend their lead at half time.
Ash Cox in her 100th game
worked hard through the
midcourt as did Brylee Pratt
to providing excellent ball
movement and place into
the goalers. Ballan 26 def C/
Linton 17. Best on court Eliza
Rivette.
B Grade
Ballan got the strong start
they needed and never
looked back as they dominated in defence. Melissa
Conroy playing a great
100th game for Ballan in GD
combining beautifully with
Kylie Fenwick to make it
very hard for Carnghams
goalers.
Ballan 40 def Carngham
22. Best on court - Kathy
Burquest.
A Grade
Peggy Shellard and Nic
OBrien were brilliant in defence taking intercepts and
continuously applying the
pressure to the Carngham
attackers. Stacey Casella was
again strong in Centre and
the girls hard work was rewarded by accurate shooting
from Broden Currie and Sam
Peoples.
Ballan 56 def Carngham
25. Best on court - Stacey
Casella.
