express yourSELF
A foreword
Describing a best friend, a member of our family, a pet, a
city, anything, can be an exhilarating, if confusing,
experience, but what about when someone asks you to write
about yourself?
Writing about oneself must be one of the most difficult things
you can do.
You cannot be proud; exaggerated, overstated, yet, you
cannot be timid, reserved, or unsure.
The first step to writing about who you are is to look through
the eyes of others, and try to see what they see. After all, we
are the conjunction of others perceptions of ourselves. And
we model our personalities on these perceptions.
This little book happened because of a lesson. I gave each
student a poem template and asked them to fill in the
missing information based on a previously written poem. The
first reaction to poetry writing is quite simply that you cant
do it; that it has to rhyme; that is has to be profound.
It is our experiences, day by day, that make existence
profound, not the words themselves, they are a complement.
What came back was truly remarkable, and well worth
sharing with you all.
But first I must thank the writer of the template, although I
cannot be sure who that is. But you can find similar
templates at: www.myteacherpages.com/MrsThonus
In the spirit of SELF school and its students, I honestly hope
you enjoy this reading experience and try it out for yourself
also.
Thank you and good afternoon.
Luis Silveiro.
I, me, myself
I, Mariana,
A fashionable vagabond; an ordinary
girl, intelligent and ambitious
Daughter of two progenitors (obviously)
Lover of unreachable knowledge
Who feels exhausted, numb, but alive
Who needs to sleep and stare at the
stars
Who fears the ocean, failure and
religious figures
Who would like to the Northern Lights
while listening to Leonard Cohen and
easting macaroons.
Am a resident of the Planet Earth and
I welcome you to my poem
