    The human respiratory system allows air to flow into and out of the lungs. Air enters through the nose and travels through the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and bronchioles before reaching the alveoli. In the alveoli, oxygen diffuses into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide diffuses out of the bloodstream. The deoxygenated blood is then pumped by the heart to tissues throughout the body where oxygen is released and carbon dioxide is absorbed before the blood returns to the lungs to repeat the process again.
