    Grouchy Lady Bug
    Objectives
    Students will be able to tell time to the hour using an analog and digital clocks. Students will be able to create a visual
    representation that sequences the events of the story. The students will have hands on access to clocks and utilize their
    motor skills from technology.
    Math TEKS: 1.7E, 1.1A, 1.1G
    Science TEKS: 1.1A, 1.2C, 1.4A
    ELAR TEKS: 1.10A, 1.4C, 1.4B
    Social Studies TESKS: 1.13A, 1.18B, 1.19B
    Technology TEKS: 1.262
    Focus/Anticipatory Set
    Hook: The teacher will show students a list of all of the players that needs to meet on Saturday for a soccer game.
    Shell explain to students how frustrated she is because she doesnt know when to meet any of her teammates. The teacher
    will present this as the foundation for the importance of time.
    Relevancy
    Students will recognize the attributes of time, measure time using digital and analog clocks to the hour and identify typical
    activities performed at various times of the day. Understand the importance of time and why it is relevant (appointments,
    lunch time, time to go home). Students can also relate the ladybug to natural emotions (prior knowledge) and relevancy to
    different times of day and night, (A.M. P.M. morning, noon, evening and midnight).
    Explanation/Teaching Strategies & Modeling
    Students will make a ladybug clock using it to practice telling time. They will move the hands of the clock to reflect the
    times listed in The Grouchy Ladybug book. Children set their ladybug clocks to match the teacher clock. Students will
    also write the time on the white board as it would be on a digital clock. The class will list things that make the students
    feel grouchy. Together the class will discuss time and brainstorm a list of ways to overcome grouchiness and be happy.
    Teaching: Checking for Understanding
    Checking their ladybug clocks, observing each student as the class distinguishes how to tell time to the hour, and ask time
    related questions while they are lining up for dismissal. Take notes of children having difficulty with the task (stick tab).
    Questions for Strategies
    Why do we need to be able to tell time at home?
    Why do we need to be able to tell time at school?
    How can we tell time?
    [Accept and encourage answers of nonstandard (the sun comes up, the sun goes down, the alarm goes off,
    getting up) as well as standard units of time.]

    What are you doing at midnight?

    Where is the hour hand?


    Where is the minute hand?
    How many hours are in daylight?
    How many house are in nighttime?
    How many total hours are combined?

    Guided Practice
    The teacher will tell students that in the story, the ladybug meets a lot of friends throughout his day and it is going to be
    our job to see what times the ladybug meets all of his friends. The teacher will ask students to show the time on their
    clocks as it is said in the story.
    The story will be read aloud and the teacher will pause after each time is said to check students clocks. This will provide
    the teacher with an informal assessment of students understanding.
    Following the completion of the story, the teacher will send the students back to their desk and go over analog and digital
    clocks.
    Closure
    After recess students will stand behind their chairs and do the hand motions of the clock while singing along to
    Flower Clock The teacher will ask higher level and open ended questions.

    Independent Practice
    Using ladybug clock during the story and at their desk, using wipe off board to distingue time to the hour, and open
    discussion.

    Demonstration clock with hour and minute hands
    Black and red paper
    Clock templet with clock hands (pre-made)
    Brads
    Crayons
    Black construction paper
    Googly eyes
    Pipe cleaners
    Scissors
    Glue

    Duration

    It is age appropriate for first grade and takes about 30 to 50 minutes to complete.
