This document provides instructions for solving a system of two linear equations in standard form using elimination. The steps are: 1) Multiply equations as needed to make the coefficients of one variable opposite; 2) Add the equations to eliminate that variable; 3) Solve the resulting single-variable equation; 4) Substitute back into the original equation to solve for the second variable; and 5) Write the solution as an ordered pair.

Use when both of the equations are in standard form.
In other words, use when both of the variables are on one
side and the constant is on the other. 2x4y = 10 x + 2y = 1 Step 1: Pick a variable to eliminate. The coefficients need to be opposites (like 5 and 5). Multiply one or both of the equations by a constant as needed to make them opposite.
Step 2: Line up the = signs. Add the equations
down making sure to keep terms on their respective sides.
Step 3: Solve the 1-variable equation.
Step 4: Substitute the answer back into one
of the original equations to solve for the second variable.
