were able to connect the literature to their lives.

Initially observed 8th grade classroom and co-taught first unit with cooperating teacher. Created
and taught second unit on poetry. Engaged students with relevant applications to the real
world, and scaffolded their ability to appreciate and understand the classic cannon. Created a
culmination poetry project to showcase student understanding and creativity. Developed
behavioral action plans, and worked one-on-one with the Special Education teacher to create an
environment where every student felt they could be successful. Tutored lower-level learners to
assist them in becoming academically successful.

Returned to the classroom in a long-term substitute role beginning by taking over a short story
unit in the middle of student learning. Planned and instructed unique lessons to engage
students in content material. Ended short story unit with a formative story project where
students were to write, edit, and create final short stories using literary elements. Worked with
students to send their work to local and state editors for review. Developed and implemented a
poetry unit engaging students with relevant and modern poets and poetry techniques. Ended
unit with a formative assessment project to bring together student learning and original work.
Began a literary non-fiction unit before transitioning the classroom back to full-time teacher.
Developed behavioral-action plans. Personally mentored students for social and academic
success before and in the after-school program. Regularly contacted parents to further their
students education possibilities. Created an environment in which students felt safe to harbor a
life-long love of learning.
