Welcome!
The unit of competency,Perform Manicure and Pedicure is one of the
competencies of Beauty Care NC II, a course which comprises the
knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a beauty care trainee to
possess.
The module, Performing Manicure and Pedicure contains training

handling and usage of tools, Shapes and styles of nail, Work safety and
First aid.

This unit covers the knowledge, skills and

attitude in performing manicure and
pedicure. This involves preparing the client,
cleaning of finger nails and toe nails, applying
nail polish, and applies final retouch.

Trimming and Filing Procedure
Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:

Introduction:
Fingernails getting a little long and it/they is/are too hard to type? Or
did you just poke a hole in your partner with that dagger cleverly disguised
as your big toenail? Time for a little personal grooming! Cutting your
fingernails and toenails is easy, and it's the right thing to do, and this
information sheet will show you how.
1. Prepare your nails. Soak your nails for a few minutes before you cut them, as
this softens them up and makes them easier to trim. This will also help avoid
splitting your nails. This step is especially important for toenails. Those can be
pretty tough.
2. Cut your nails. Cut them straight across until they no longer extend over your
finger or toe, so that they don't show any white. If you are a finger-style guitarist,
you may want to leave about 1/16th inch (1.5 to 2 mm) on your picking hand
usually the right hand
3. Wait for your nails to dry. Wait for a little bit until your nails are dry
and are no longer soft. Filing wet nails will leave you with jagged, rough nails
when they dry, and may also cause your nails to split and crack.
4. File your nails. Use a nail file to shape your nails, and to make sure the
edges of the nail are smooth. Jagged nails can catch on clothes, socks, and
pantyhose and will cause nails to tear or break. When filing, always file
gently in one long stroke, from the side to the center of the nail. Use the
coarse, shaping side first if you need to remove more nail. Then use the
finer-grade shaping side to smooth your nails out. Your nails should be
slightly triangle or oval and not pointed, when finished. This will keep them
from breaking. Nails can weaken if you file too low into the corners and sides

same length and shape, and also that they're smooth and not jagged or

Proper Handling and Usage of Tools

Introduction:
A cuticle pusher is a simple nail tool used to perform manicures and
pedicures. It pushes the skin from your cuticles back and away from your
nails to help your nails grow stronger. Here's information on how to safely
use a cuticle pusher.
1.Decide whether to get a cuticle pusher made of steel or wood. Steel
cuticle pushers are best for tough, hard cuticles. Wooden cuticle pushers are
best for soft cuticles.
2.Pick which tip you want your cuticle pusher to have.Some have blunt
rounded ends, others have sharp pointy ends or spoon-shaped ends and yet
others are curved. The most common one has a rounded tip on one end and
a sharp tip on the other.
3.Prepare Your Nails
For best results, soften the nails and cuticles before using the
cuticle pusher.
This is a necessary step to make pushing the cuticles away from the nails
easier. If the cuticles are not soft and you try to push them, you might tear
the skin, causing painful lesions.
4.Apply cuticle remover on the nail.
You can also use cuticle oil together with the cuticle remover. Make
sure to spread it evenly all over the edges. Leave it for 2 minutes.
Submerge the fingers in a small bowl of warm water and soak them for
about 3 minutes. This will help soften the cuticles even more

5.Push Back the Cuticles

Use the rounded part of the cuticle pusher to push back the cuticles
on the surface of the nail. Angle the pusher 35 to 45 degrees and gently
slide it towards the base of the nail and push away the softened cuticles.
Use the pointed, sharp part to push down the cuticles at the
corners of the nails. You can also use this tip to clean under the nails.
Repeat this process for all the nails.

Shapes and Styles of Nail

Introduction:
There three most common nail shapes are: square, squoval and
oval. Let's take a look at each of these shapes and how you can achieve
them.
Square
The square nail shape is one of the strongest nail shapes you can have
because the full width of the nail remains at the free edge. However, this
shape isn't usually flattering on shorter nails as it can make hands look
blunt and heavy; the square shape is best used to draw attention to longer
nails.To create this shape: hold your nail file at a 90 angle perpendicular to
the finger and file straight across in one direction.
Squoval
The squoval nail shape is the generally the most popular nail shape, as well
as the most universally flattering shape. The nail is still able to maintain
most of its natural strength but the corners are slightly rounded for a softer,
more feminine appearance.
To create this shape: first start by following the directions for creating the
square shape. Once you're satisfied, you'll want to hold your file at a 65
angle and carefully round the corners. As you move your file from the corner
to the middle of your nail, work your file from the 65 angle to a 90 angle.
Oval/Rounded
This is a more traditional nail shape but it's still very popular. The tip is
rounded instead of squared but the sides of the free edge are able to grow
straight, which maintains the strength and structure of the nail.

To create this shape: allow the sides of your nails to grow straight but hold
your file at approximately a 40 angle and round only the tip of the free
edge.
If you're not sure which shape is right for you or which will be the most
flattering, here's a tip: take a look at the shape of your cuticles. If they're
rounded, a round nail shape will be flattering for you. And vice versa, if your
cuticles are more squared, then the square or squoval shape will be
flattering for you. Of course, you can choose to have whichever nail shape
you prefer; this tip will just help you make a decision if you're not sure
which shape to opt for!

Basic nail care is the fundamental attention given to normal toe
nails and skin surfaces, including the cutting of nails, the removal of
superficial dead skin materially interdigitally and the application to the skin
of emollients or rehydrating agents. However nail care specialist must be

Steps/Procedures: 1. Preparation
a. Explain the procedure to the client and gain their permission
b. Ensure the client is seated comfortably with their hand or

c. Place clients hand or foot on a towel, or similar (to catch
clippings)
d. Worker to wash hands and apply gloves and if necessary
eyewear/mask/apron.
e. Look at the clients nails to assess the need for nail care.
Note if there are any areas of broken skin/nail
damage/infection.

1. When to See a Health Care Provider
Go to an emergency room or call a health care provider

Discoloration or a bruise under the nail covers more than a
quarter of the nail or there is continuing, intense pain.
The nail is completely torn off or partially cut off from a

2. Stop Bleeding
Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth.
3. Clean and Protect the Wound
If the nail is torn, use sterile scissors to cut off rough edges
to prevent further injury.
Clean the wound and torn nail area with soap and warm
water.
Apply antibiotic ointment and bandage.
4. Treat Symptoms
For swelling, ice the area.

For pain, give acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil,
Aleve).
5. Follow Up
Continue to use ice and over-the-counter pain medication as

needed. Pain and swelling should clear up within a week. It
can take several months for a nail that has separated from
the nailbed to grow back.
Change the bandage daily. If signs of infection develop -such as pus, redness, or heat around the nail or a red
streak extending from the wound -- call a health care
provider promptly.
The person may need a tetanus shot or booster, depending

on the date of last booster shot.
If the person sees a health care provider, the health care

provider will determine if there is a fracture or if tissue
under the nail needs repair and may remove the nail to
make the repair. The health care provider may make a hole
in the nail to drain blood and give a tetanus shot if needed.

1. Remove old nail polish. In removing old nail polish, moisten small
piece of cotton with nail polish remover and press over old polish on
each nail. Then moisten cotton with nail polish remover to remove
the small piece of cotton on the nails.
2. File nails. Discuss with patron the nail shape best suited for her. File
the nails from the little finger towards the thumb, in the following
manner:
a. Hold the patrons finger between the thumb and first two fingers of
your left hand
b. Hold the file in the right hand and tilt it slightly so that filing is
confined mainly to the underside of the free edge
c. Shape nails into graceful oval tips, never extreme points. Use the
coarse side of file or emery board to shape the nail. File each nail
from corner to center going from right to left and then from left to
right. On each side of the nails use two short quick strokes and one
long sweeping stroke.
