Social Justice
To me, social justice is the equal opportunity that every individual has, which includes
the right to engage in meaningful occupations and the have access to similar opportunities and
privileges everyone else has. As a future occupational therapist, I must strive to provide everyone
the same opportunity to receive therapy services, especially those in greatest need. As I learned
in my social justice class fifth semester, I have the role and expectation as an occupational
therapist to transform the lives of people who are marginalized by disability, age, socioeconomic
status, gender, education level, etc.
When I first entered the program, I honestly had no idea what social justice was. But
from the very beginning of the curriculum, the faculty emphasized what social justice was and
what role occupational therapists had within social justice. As time went on and I began
volunteering more in the community, I started to understand the importance of advocating for
others and for what I believe is just.
In my second semester, I volunteered at the Paralympic Sports Basketball Tournament in
Las Vegas, Nevada. This event raised money for the Paralympic Sports Foundation and gave
individuals in wheelchairs the opportunity to engage in a meaningful occupation. I chose to
participate in this event because I have a friend who is confined to a wheelchair and it was
meaningful for me to participate in this event due to that. This event really showed me that just
because some has a certain disability, they should still be given the same opportunities to
participate in occupations they deem meaningful.
Through all of my volunteer opportunities and knowledge gained throughout the
curriculum, I was able to develop awareness of populations of different disabilities and cultures.
