Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence-based practice is the conscientious use of current best evidence in making decisions
about patient care. It is based on the integration of critically appraised research results with the
clinical expertise, and the clients preferences, beliefs, and values. The main aim of evidencebased practice is to improve client outcomes and occupational performance during therapy
sessions.
Throughout all of my courses in this curriculum, especially the research courses with Dr.
Costa, I have gained skills on how to search for applicable articles using many different search
engines such as Google Scholar, CINAHL, etc. For the quantitative research paper, my group
and I studied whether or not longer commute times to school caused an increase in student stress
levels. The study concluded that commute times did not have a significant effect on perceived
stress levels. For the qualitative research paper, my group and I studied stress management
techniques used to cope with stress in graduate students. The study concluded that students used
positive coping techniques such as physical exercise and meditation, and a few students used
negative coping techniques such as consuming alcohol and procrastinating. Finally, for the
systematic review, my partner and I asked the question, What interventions improve motor
performance skills in children with developmental coordination disorder? The study concluded
that there is no true gold standard to treat these children, rather multiple interventions should be
combined to improve motor performance skills.
Although I was not very interested in research, I realized how important research is and how
important it is to grow the field of occupational therapy. Requirements for evidence in most of
my assignments have increased my confidence in finding articles and evidence that I can utilize
when I enter into the field in a few short months. Before coming to TUN, I had never done a lot
of research, but with two years of practice, I can now quickly find up-to-date and relevant
information. One important thing to take away is that research does not stop after I graduate, I
will continue to improve my skills and continue my education throughout my career by reading
articles and researching topics.
