UNIVERSITY OF WEST FLORIDA ARGONAUTS (26-12, 18-6 GSC) vs.

DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY STATESMEN (27-11, 18-6 GSC)

(DH) Saturday, April 16, 2016 - 2:00 p.m./5:00 p.m. CT - Dave Boo Ferriss Field, Cleveland, Mississippi
Sunday, April 17, 2016 - 1:00 p.m. CT - Dave Boo Ferriss Field, Cleveland, Mississippi

Games #39-41 Road Games #20-22 Live Stats/Video: GoArgos.com

THE BATTLE FOR FIRST: After both West Florida and Delta State went 2-1 last weekend, the Argos and Statesmen will battle for first place in the Gulf South Conference...
After this weekend, it appears both squads will have a mild slate for the remainder of
each Gulf South Conference schedule, as UWFs last two conference opponents, Shorter
and Lee, have combined for a 19-27 GSC record this season, while DSUs schedule
concludes with Valdosta State and Mississippi College, who own a combined 20-25 GSC
mark in 2016.
VS. NATIONALLY RANKED OPPONENTS: Delta State will be the Argos fifth nationally
ranked opponent faced in 2016... Previous opponents include previously Tampa, Valdosta
State, Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama, who were ranked No. 1, No. 18, No. 9 and
No. 17, respectively at the time... Kyle Hamner leads the team with a .378 batting average
against those opponents... Alex Greene is hitting .326 with a .400 on base percentage...
Walker OConnor leads the rotation against nationally ranked opponents, owning a 1.46
ERA over four starts... Jarrod Petree has made four relief appearances against nationally
ranked opponents and over 13.1 innings pitched, Petree has a .213 opponents batting
average and a 1.35 earned run average.
KEEPING IT ROLLING: After taking two of three against West Alabama, the Argonauts
continued its streak of consecutive conference series wins that now stands at nine consecutive series... UWF has won all eight of its GSC series this year and is the only team
in the conference to do accomplish that feat.
HISTORY MADE: Kyle Hamners lengthy hitting streak came to an end on Sunday,
capping the streak at an impressive 22 games, the second longest in program history...
After Alex Greenes 14-game hitting streak earlier this season, it is only the second time
in program history two players have had a hitting streak of at least 14 games in the same
season... The 2005 season featured four players who had a streak of at least 14 games.
RANKINGS UPDATE: West Florida moved up two spots in the Collegiate Baseball
Newspaper poll to No. 23, while falling just one spot in the NCBWA national rankings to
No. 17... West Florida maintained its No. 3 ranking in the South Region in the NCBWA
regional rankings... Delta State is No. 12 in both national polls, while sitting No. 2 in the
South Region... Delta State narrowly topped UWF in the regional rankings, as Delta State
received six second-place votes and four third-place votes, while West Florida recorded
four second-place votes and six third-place votes.

program in 2012 and 16th round pick by the Miami Marlins in the 2012 Major League Baseball FirstYear Player draft made his MLB debut last season and will begin the 2016 season with Triple-A New
Orleans Zephyrs... Ellington made 23 appearances out of the Marlins bullpen in his rookie season,
posting a 2.88 ERA in 25 innings pitched with 18 strikeouts and a 1.20 WHIP.
#WALKOFFWEDNESDAY: Wednesday nights have provided quite the thrill for Argonaut fans this
season, as on three seperate occasions West Florida has won in its last at bat on a Wednesday...
The #WalkoffWednesday trend started on March 2, with Jimmy Redovians walk off home run against
Stillman, then continued with a walk off single from Brandon Tyler against Spring Hill on March 9... Kyle
Hamner reached on an error to score Nic Strasser in an extra-inning contest on March 30.
FIGUEROA NAMED GSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK (3/29): After hitting .538 with three home runs and
nine RBI in a series against Christian Brothers, Jean Figueroa was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week on March 29 It is the fourth conference weekly award for the Argonauts this season
In Game 2 of last Fridays doubleheader, Figueroa became the first 2016 Argo to hit multiple home runs
in the same game.
RELIEF ASSASSIN: Jarrod Petree, who was an All-GSC starting pitcher last season, has made a
seamless transition to the Argonaut bullpen, owning a 1.15 ERA over 31.1 innings pitched Petree has
been a specialist in getting the Argos out of jams, as the redshirt junior has inherited 12 runners this
season and has left them all stranded The Apopka, Florida native has not allowed a hit in eight of his
14 appearances this season... Petree owns a team-best 0.76 WHIP.
POSTING ZEROS: UWF led the GSC with 10 shutouts in 2015 and is on a similar track for 2016, having six shutouts this season... Six shutouts is the most in the South Region, and the sixth most in NCAA
Division II... UWFs 10 shutouts in 2015 was the third most for a single season in GSC history.
THE PEN IS MIGHTIER: The UWF bullpen has posted an outstanding 2.26 ERA this season, allowing
just 34 earned runs in 135.2 innings pitched... Five of 10 relievers used this year have ERAs under 2.00
when coming into relief situations.
OCONNOR NAMED GSC/NCBWA SOUTH REGION PITCHER OF THE WEEK (2/16): Walker OConnor took home the first weekly conference award for the UWF baseball team in 2016, as the redshirt-junior earned the award after a dominant eight-inning performance against No. 1 Tampa... OConnor was
also named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association South Region Pitcher of the Week... UWF
took home two South Region Pitcher of the Week awards in 2015, both going to Brandon Nagem...
OConnor hurled eight shutout innings against the defending national champions, while striking out a
career-high eight and walking none... OConnor held Tampa to a .173 batting average for the game
and only allowed five hits... OConnor, who opened the season with 3.2 innings and three earned runs
against Florida Southern, lowered his 2016 ERA from 7.36 to 2.31... OConnor only allowed two runners
to get to second base and no Spartan reached third base on Sunday... The GSC Pitcher of the Week
honor marks as the first time the Massachusetts native has received the award... Tampa had its 18game win streak snapped while they were shutout for the first time since the 2013 season.
SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS: West Florida enters 2016 looking for its eighth consecutive 30-win season,
as its current streak of seven seasons with 30 wins marks as the longest active streak in the GSC...
West Floridas 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship is the last time a GSC club has won the
national title... UWF has appeared in seven consecutive GSC Tournaments and four of the last six
NCAA South Regional tournaments.
