Peru was the country where the Inca empire was built being one of the biggest self sufficient
civilization at that time. This empire was built in Cuzco, Peru on the Andes Mountains since they knew
that location mattered in order to stay safe from enemies. The Inca empire was built in such a strategic
manner that the city could only be seen if you were a certain distance away. The empire is called
Maccchu Picchu where the Sun was the Inca's God who's name was Atawalpa. They spoke a language
that only few speak today which is called Kechuan. This civilization had developed the sewerage
system, the sundial in order to tell time and architecture to sub stain the weather of either the heat or the
cold. The Inca's wardrobe was gold. They had gold everywhere but they saw it as an item of clothing
and accessories never as money. The Inca culture brought many advances to our day to day lives today
but Peru still has much more culture than just the Inca ruins.
The music has its own beauty with its amazing and unique dances. Two of their main dances are
Marinera Northena originating from Trujillo and Festejo originating from the Jungle. Marinera is a
dance where a woman is dressed in this beautiful skirt that is as wide as one's arms span and the man is
on top of a horse. The horse has been trained at birth to trot a certain way that it looks like it is dancing
to the acutal beat of the music. These horses can only be found in Trujillo because they are a certain
breed. The dance is a very flirtatious dance where the girl plays hard to get and the guy tries to impress
her by his moves on the horse and by the end the girl falls for him and end with a kiss. Festejo is an
afro-negro dance where the slaves in the jungle would dance around the fire. It is a dance based on the
isolation of the hips and the chest. But the music is all done off of a cajon, which translated translated is
a drawer. Now it sounds like a drum but you sit on top of it and hit it in between your legs instead of
standing or sitting by it. Then with the beat of the cajon the dancers move their hips and chest. Other
drums can be used to create a more distinguished beat but it has to always have the cajon.
Marinera is a dance that originated in Peru in 1879 in honor of the great "marines", the Peruvian
navy, who fought against Chile. It was called Zamacueca when Peru was friends with Chile but after
the war with this country, the named changed. This dance is combination of Spanish, and African
dance. There are currently over 6 types of Marinera. The dances you will be learning are the most
famous ones : Marinera Nortena and Marinera Limena.

around, became popular in many forms of music, similar box drums can be found in Blues music and
many forms of folk music. The Festejo is a festive, social type of dance that has various rhythmic
movements from African origin and influence. It is a very energetic dance that involves lots of
