Thereare48[1]tigerreservesinIndia[2]whicharegovernedbyProjectTigerwhichis
administeredbytheNationalTigerConservationAuthority.Indiaishometo70percent
oftigersintheworld.In2006,therewere1,411tigerswhichincreasedto1,706in2011
and2,226in2014.[3]

Goals
Thegoal53,547.5km2(20,674.8sqmi)ofdeclaredreservesareoperatedbystate
forestrydepartments"toensuremaintenanceofviablepopulationsofthe
conservationdependentBengaltigersinIndia.Thetigersaremaintainedfortheir
scientific,economic,aesthetic,culturalandecologicalvaluesandtopreserveforall
timeareasofbiologicalimportanceasanationalheritageforthebenefit,education
andenjoymentofthepeople."[4]

Populationassessment
Thelandmark2008report,StatusoftheTigers,Copredators,andPreyinIndia,
publishedbytheNationalTigerConservationAuthority,estimatedonly1,411adult
tigersinexistenceinIndia.[5]The2010NationalTigerAssessmentestimatedthe
totalpopulationoftigersinIndiaas1,706.AsperMinistryofEnvironmentand
Forests,thetigerpopulationinIndiastoodat2,226in2014,[6]withanincreaseof
30.5%sincethe2010estimate.Thisexhaustivestudyindicatedthatbetterprotected
tigersourcesites,especiallytigerreserves,havemaintainedviablepopulations.
However,theareaoccupiedbytigersoutsideprotectedareashasdecreased
considerably.Thisdemonstratestheneedforcorridorsfortigerstomovebetween
sourcesites.TheexistingtigerreservesrepresentaroundonethirdofIndia'shigh
densityforestarea.[7]
In201011,NationalTigerConservationAuthority(NTCA)inpartnershipwiththe
WildlifeInstituteofIndia(WII)undertookanindependentmanagement
effectivenessevaluation(MEE)ofthe44tigerreservesinthecountry.Thereserves
werecategorizedintofourmajorcategories.Karnatakahasthehighestnumberof
tigersintheagegroupof1.5yearswithmore408bigcats.Uttarakhandhas340,
MadhyaPradesh308,TamilNadu229,Maharashtra190,Assam167,Kerala136
andUttarPradesh117.
