combines his abilities to communicate
effectively in Spanish with complete technical competency. I
think were very lucky to have his session, presented in
Spanish as part of the Texas expo.
Saturday, March 31, provides a rare opportunity for repair-shop owners in the Metroplex area and beyond to enroll those technicians who are more comfortable with
Spanish than with English. Joses session will rely on providing diagnostic and rebuilding knowledge on a selection
of subjects that have been most on the minds of those calling

northern Utah where his
family raised dairy cattle
and sugar beets, Keith McCulloch
learned to work hard and put in
long days. At age 14 he left the
farm for a job in the city, and almost 70 years later hes still putting
in full days rebuilding automatic
transmissions.
Founder Keith McCulloch rebuilds a

lot of the rear-wheel-drive units. He
enjoys woodworking in his time
away from the shop.
Keith, who will be 84 in April,

has operated Keiths Transmission
& Sales Inc. in Kansas City, Kan.,
with his wife, Janette, and son Ray
since 1967. The Sales part of the
name is a carryover from when the
company sold recreational vehicles.
When he left the family farm,
Keith went to work for a filling station and stayed there until he was
almost 18 and then enlisted in the
U.S. Air Force to serve as a motorpool mechanic. After his discharge
in 1949, he got a job as a mechanic
at a Ford dealership in Kansas City,
Kan. He spent the next 21 years
there, completing Ford Motor Co.s
course on servicing and repairing
Fords two-speed Ford-O-Matic
transmission in the early 1950s.
During that time Keith also had
started a small shop of his own to
do car repairs and continued with
that after leaving the dealership.
About 1967, Keith started training Ray as a mechanic and they
worked together at the new business. While Keith was working for
TWA at night, Ray would work in
the shop, and Keith would run the
shop in the daytime.

Janette said of the building that

houses the shop. The former
owner, a welder, had built the
building that same year and found
that he didnt need that much
space, so he offered to sell it to the
McCullochs.
From 1969 through 1991, we
sold recreational vehicles in addition to doing transmissions,
Janette said. We liked that business too, but it just wasnt going to
be a paying business like the transmissions.
In addition to three lifts inside
the shop, Keiths has two outside.
As long as its not too cold and
theres not snow on the ground, we
use them to check vehicles, and one
lift is for heavy vehicles like mini
motor homes and things like that,
or something thats too tall to come
in the door.
Because people remember that
we were in that business at one
time, we see a few small motor
homes that we just do things like
the transmission or change the

Kansas City, Kan., is just across
the Missouri River from Kansas
City, Mo., so the shop draws customers from both states. One
wholesale customer is a general-repair shop about 60 miles away, Ray
said. There are about 14 generalrepair garages that bring their
transmissions or the whole vehicles
to us. Some of them will bring the
trannies only in, some will bring
the whole vehicles in.
Working on high-performance
and antique transmissions is a
niche business that Ray enjoys.
We do a fair amount of transmissions for street-rodders at the car
shows. We see more of the older
stuff with those guys. Ive been
doing it for years.
He says he knows of only one
other shop in the area that will rebuild antique transmissions. We
dont see a lot, but we still see castiron Powerglides and some of the
cast-iron Cruise-O-Matics.
GM 700-R4 and 200-4R and Ford
AOD units are still popular with
street-rodders in the area, he said.
Other than a few rear-wheeldrive units, Keiths doesnt rebuild
automatic transmissions for inventory, Ray said. We build them as
they come in because of the electronics and the ratios. If someone
wants to preorder something we
will go ahead and put something
together for them, but thats very
rare. Almost everybody just redoes
the originals. Like everybody,
weve got a few of the basic rearwheel-drives on the shelf. As far as
front-wheel-drives we dont try to
pre-build any of those, because between the differential ratios and
the sprocket ratios, the electronics
changing, theyre just hard to
stock.

Ray and Scott are ASE certified
and are members of both ATSG
and ATRA, and they attend technical seminars every year to stay current.
The shops standard warranty
on rebuilt transmissions is 12
months/12,000 miles, Ray said. For
an additional cost the customer can
extend the coverage to as much as
three years or 100,000 miles. They
have that option, but in this area,
most people dont want to spend
the extra money it costs.
Percentage-wise, one out of every
hundred might want the longer
warranty.
Because Keiths has been in business so long and is well known in
the area, he said, the only advertising is a small ad in the yellow
pages. This place is pretty much
all word of mouth.
The shop rebuilds 15-16 units in
an average week, including the
carry-in units, Ray said. Three of
the garage customers always bring
the whole vehicle, and he prefers
that arrangement because it helps
to prevent installation problems.
The biggest deal nowadays is
not getting the cooling systems
cleaned out properly, he pointed
out. If they cant get them cleaned
out and they dont have a scan tool
to hook up to know whats going
on, thats a big downfall with
carry-in shops. So we prefer the
whole car if possible. TD

Old plastic supports may become brittle and break over time or during transmission disassembly. ZF discontinued early style
and retrofits the late one. But the only way to retrofit is to change the entire pump since there is a stop-tab that meets with a

from P1776 (47), one of
the most-common trouble codes plaguing
Dodge/Chrysler vehicles is P0750
(or 41), Low/Reverse Solenoid
Circuit error, in 41TE-type transmissions (see Shift Pointers,
October 2008). This is purely an
electrical code and typically points
to the solenoid, the wiring (which
includes the connectors) from the
solenoid body to the TCM, or the
TCM itself. In so many instances
on our technical hotline the cause
has been a defective TCM. What
becomes very frustrating is out-ofthe-box remanufactured TCMs
coughing up the same code as soon
as they are installed; makes you
think you missed something in
your previous diagnosis.
Just recently John Thornton
from Autotrain Inc. ran into another scenario that caused this code to
set and was kind enough to share

it with me. Now, keep in mind that

all too often when this code pops
up usually the first line of attack is
to throw a solenoid body at it
(sometimes this can be a literal
act!). If that doesnt work the
wiring might be replaced, followed
by a TCM.
Admittedly, a good portion of
the time the code is resolved by
one of these three methods; that is,
if you happen to get a good remanufactured TCM. Otherwise, this
code will drive you crazy, and out
of desperation you finally use a
meter or scope to locate the problem. After all, when everything has
been replaced and the status of the
code remains the same (a new
Zeppelin song), everything is still
up for grabs. Except in Johns case,
which as you will see is a testimony to hooking up a scope first
to see whats going on, as sometimes we get blindsided with pattern-failure repairs and end up
throwing parts at the car to see
what works.
The vehicle was a 2007 Chrysler
Sebring Coupe (JS) 2.4L with a
41TE sporting the P0750 code. The
unit had been replaced twice, and
what makes this particular vehicle
of interest is that it has the Global
Powertrain Engine Computer
(GPEC) (Figure 1) instead of the
old 60-way TCM. Could this mean
that GPECs as well as the previous
New Generation Controllers
(NGC) 3 & 4 are cursed also?
After verifying the presence of
code P0750 John attached his scope
to each of the four solenoids and
cycled the key to the on position
(engine off). The GPEC did an initial cycling of the solenoids (Figure
2). To an eye accustomed to viewing this type of data two things immediately become apparent: The
typical inductive spike is missing,
and all four solenoid voltages are
half of what they should be (Figure
3).

well as shift feel (clutch pressure). In so
doing, it also continuously checks the
integrity of each of the four solenoids
circuitry by quickly turning the solenoid off. This causes an inductive spike
(fly-back voltage) that typically is in
the range of 42 volts.
With two issues immediately observed, the engine was started (Figure
4) and the same two issues remained,
even with the alternator now in play.
Since all four solenoids were behaving
incorrectly in the same way and all four
receive the same voltage supply, the
next logical diagnostic step is to check
this common voltage supply.

talking with transmission specialists
and shop owners.
They often know about the Sonnax approach
to testing and repairing valve bodies but have
lots of questions about how exactly it all
works. Last year Sonnax rolled out its
Roadshow, a series of free seminars that present valve-body diagnostic and reaming techniques to transmission rebuilders across the
country. After a successful first year, the
Roadshow is back with 15 seminars planned
for 2012, including at events like Showpower.
The Sonnax Roadshow focuses on live instruction in cutting-edge valve-body repair: diagnostics and bore reaming. Although many
rebuilders know the basics behind vacuum
testing, they may never have received formal
instruction and are unsure how to make these
techniques work in their shop. Bore reaming
an innovative repair method used by the industrys top transmission rebuilders, specialists and large valve-body remanufacturers
also can be challenging without firsthand experience. These are topics the Roadshow is designed to address, making it a great way for
anyone to truly advance their knowledge and
skills.
At each Roadshow event, Sonnax introduces methods for identifying the root cause
of transmission problems, plus repair techniques to completely restore and/or upgrade
units. The Roadshows live testing and reaming station is the cornerstone of the seminar.
Participants see valve bodies tested and repaired right in front of them, plus get a birdseye view of the details thanks to a large
overhead video screen zoomed in on the
equipment. Participants are encouraged to test
and ream units at the workstation themselves
to get a feel for the process while receiving further hands-on instruction.
The Dallas Roadshow takes place in the
Hyatt at Reunion, 5:15 p.m. on Thursday,

APRA/Showpower Factory Tour
Seminar participants can take the Thursday morning tour that is

part of the APRA Volume and Heavy-Duty Transmission division
meetings that will take place during Showpower. We depart by
motor coach from the headquarters hotel, the Hyatt Regency
Dallas, at 8 a.m. The first tour stop is Bishop International,
where well see that companys automatic-transmission hard-parts
operation and the manual-transmission remanufacturing lines.
From Bishop well continue on to visit the state-of-the-art
aftermarket engine-remanufacturing facilities of AER. In addition
to the engines, AER is a Ford Authorized Distributor and has a
line of remanufactured aftermarket transmissions from its plant in
suburban Chicago. AER will host a lunch for the tour group and
opening its private collection of classic cars for us to enjoy.

wiring diagram (Figure 5) and decided to

check this power source at connector
C115, terminal 20, on the relay side of the
connector (figures 6 & 7). With the scope
hooked up to both the power source and
the low/reverse solenoid on the opposite
side of the connector and the ignition
turned on, you can see full power to the
connector with a voltage drop to the
low/reverse solenoid still present (Figure
8). You can also see how quickly the computer recognized a problem, as evidenced
by the power supply going to 0 because of
the relay being turned off.
This indicated that there might be a
problem with the connector itself, so John
quickly put a jumper wire in place (Figure
9). Once this was done, the low/reverse
solenoid came back to life, being pulsed on
and off at full battery voltage along with a
45-volt inductive spike (Figure 10). With
this inductive spike the computer can determine the integrity of the circuit. If its
too high or too low, the P0750 code sets.
With the old 60-way TCM this spike is
around 42 volts. With this new GPEC (in
use since the 2007 model year) the spike is
not as loaded down so it hits the 45-volt
mark.
The one question you may be asking
yourself is if all the solenoids were affected by a common power supply, why did
only P0750 come up? This is a good question. When these vehicles start up, the
low/reverse solenoid is the
first one the computer looks at.
If there is a hard fault with this
circuit, the low/reverse code
will set before the computer
looks at any others. This may
explain why in the past you
may have seen a wire problem
for the low/reverse solenoid.
After it was repaired, you suddenly had another code for the
2-4 solenoid, as it too had a
wire problem. Since the
low/reverse set first, the computer didnt look further. Once
low/reverse was repaired, the
computer then moved on to
the next solenoid to be
checked, the 2-4.
The correction for this vehicle was to do a simple, inexpensive, 30-minute repair of
the connector. TD

several Nissan
vehicles develops a hard
1-2 upshift as a result of
uncontrolled line pressure. Sometimes code
P0745 is stored for a
problem in the line-pressure-control solenoid
circuit. Replacing the solenoid assembly usually
fixes the problem. But,
the next time this happens to you, or you get
to experience this for the
first time, the fix may be
as simple as gently
squeezing a crimp.
The pressure-control
solenoid is grounded internally through an eyelet bolted to the valve
body (Figure 1). Remove
the bolt and tug on the
wire to see whether the
crimp is clamped down
into the wire properly
(figures 2 and 3). There
are instances in which
the crimping process did
not clamp it down sufficiently and the wire becomes loose. If you
discover a loose-fitting
wire, give the crimping a
gentle squeeze to restore
tight contact. There may
be instances in which a
little solder would be in
order.
Also take a look at the

crimp where the wires come out of the solenoid (Figure 4). If this has been lifted up,
give it a gentle push down (figures 5 and
6). This will take tension off the wire, giving it the slack it needs to prevent vibration from pulling it loose again. TD

Our Charger Runs the Quarter Mile

The sheriff now wins more than half of his races

n my previous installment
(November 2011), I profiled our
progress of hot-rodding a
part-time sheriffs car for our local
one-fourth-mile drag strip,
Bandimere Speedway.
Our speedway hosts a program
called Take it to the Track, an
initiative aimed at getting young
drag racers off the street and onto
a safer venue, and this 2006 Dodge
Charger just needed its exhaust
system installed before we could
start the engine.
To recap, here is the list of aftermarket, high-performance parts
that we were charged with installing:
A higher-lift roller camshaft and
new roller lifters
A higher-stall torque converter
A cold-air intake and filter
A larger throttle body
Headers and a cat-back exhaust
system
A Diablosport hand-held flash
reprogrammer
A new ring-and-pinion set with
a 3.68 gear ratio
Full engine-gasket set, fluids
and filters.
Two months of part-time volunteer labor had been invested in this
police car, and we were itchin to
hear it run!
Figure 1 shows the cat-back
stainless-steel exhaust with high-

flow mufflers and an X-pipe

crossover. My understanding of
this type of exhaust crossover is
that the X-type promotes improved scavenging effect by
smoothing out uneven exhaust
pulses, whereas the H-type
crossover is less efficient, as the
gases would rather take the path of
least resistance, which is straight
down the exhaust pipe. I have even
read articles comparing these highperformance exhaust systems to no
exhaust at all, and often there is no
reduction or addition in horsepower with the new exhaust,
which is pretty amazing!
Once we started the engine, we
were greeted with a nice, mellow
exhaust rumble, one you could
hear from inside the car. It got
louder and better with acceleration. Because we had installed nonMDS valve lifters (Our 5.7-liter
Hemi engine includes a unique
feature - the multi-displacement
system [MDS] that deactivates
four of the eight cylinders when
the throttle is closed or at steady
speeds. This is accomplished
through the use of dual-mode
lifters and four solenoids that reduce oil pressure from 16 psi to 3
psi to close the intake and exhaust
valves on cylinders 1, 4, 6 and 7),
we had a permanently illuminated
MIL (malfunction indicator lamp).
For our purposes, as long as we
knew the root cause of the MIL, we
werent concerned, as this would
not affect the intended purpose of
our vehicle. I dont like having this
situation; however, I am not aware
of a simple way to circumvent this
system and make the powertrain
control module (PCM) happy.
Once I talked our sheriff into letting me test-drive his cruiser, I did
so as much as I could! I have to say
that everyone else on the road
drove extremely well when I was
within sight.
Once I finished having a little
fun with my friends and neighbors, I was able to make some adjustments to the PCM with our
aftermarket flash programmer.
This was my first foray into this
style of aftermarket flash programming, and I was excited to see the

and spark, adjusted the
tire size to reflect the
current treads,
changed the axle ratio
to the new 3.68 gear
ratio and raised the
shift points. I only
wish I had the time to
run a few horsepower pulls on my
friends Mustang dynamometer,
and then adjust individual line
items to see what effect it would
have on horsepower and/or onequarter-mile times.
Once we had the Charger running and put some miles on it, the
sheriff came to pick it up. He surprised us when he asked all of our
young technicians to sign the cars
wing with a permanent marker
(Figure 6) a nice touch for those
who donated so many hours to this
endeavor.
The ultimate test for our race car
proved to be the most fun: taking it
to the track! We met the sheriff at a

solid 15.18 seconds and 93 mph

(Figure 9). Faster passes would
come as we experimented with the
flash programmer, and we had a
lot of fun racing an eclectic mix of
Detroit muscle and import cars.

Charger. Ultimately, the onequarter-mile time for our
Charger dropped from 15.9 to
14.8 seconds (at 6,000 feet of elevation), and the miles per hour
jumped from 87 to 96 at the end
of the track.
Once More,
Not the Transmission
ts very simple to get steered in

the wrong direction when
youre diagnosing a transmission complaint. There are so many
different sensors and components
that can cause transmission-like
symptoms that at first it seems as if
without a doubt you have a transmission problem, and from a customers perspective they are
convinced its going to cost them an
arm and a leg, which provides you
the opportunity to be a hero and
gain a customer for life.
A couple of years ago I recall
reading an article by Wayne
Colonna that pointed out several
external factors that can produce
symptoms that seem to point to
possible internal transmission
problems. In this article we want to
talk about another unlikely component that can send you into a diagnostic tail spin: the alternator.
A common complaint of a cycling torque-converter lockup
and/or fourth-gear hunting with
no codes on Dodge diesel truck applications can be caused by a bad
alternator diode. During cruise a
defective diode can allow for high
voltage spikes to occur, causing
electrical noise within the TPS circuit. Also youll find that Dodge
ran the TPS wiring harness alongside the alternators wiring harness,
which can cause electrical noise to
be induced in the TPS circuit.
Besides the obvious havoc that a
poor charging system, bad diodes
and bad grounds can have on a vehicles electrical system, it can also
fail mechanically.
Heres something I wasnt aware
of until recently, a trend of several

vehicle manufacturers using whats

called an isolator decoupler pulley
(IDP). The IDP is an improvement
on the overrunning alternator pulley, which has been around since
1990. Basically its an alternator
pulley that works in the normal
way except it has a one-way clutch
that allows the drive belt to freewheel under certain conditions,
such as sudden engine decelerations. Incorporating the overrunning alternator pulley or an IDP
eliminates belt noise; it also requires less belt tension than the
previous systems. Less tension
means fewer loads and less fuel
used.
One of the most-common problems with these systems on highermileage vehicles is bearing noise. A
worn bearing can cause a brief
noise when you shut the engine off.
Another possibility is that a customer might complain of a noise
during the 1-2 shifts. This complaint is more likely to come from a
driver with a heavy foot who
makes a lot of wide-open-throttle
upshifts. One thing to keep in mind
is that the engine decelerates rapidly during hard shifts. If you suspect
a bad bearing, have someone rev
the engine and then quickly shut
the ignition off while you listen for
a noise at the front of the alternator.
Diagnosing these would-be
transmission problems can be a
challenge, but also rewarding. Its
one of the best ways I know to get a
customer telling everyone they
know how great your shop is! TD

he New Venture 247 transfer

case was used in the Jeep
Grand Cherokee (WJ) vehicle
in the 1999 to 2004 model years.
Nobody throws away a Jeep, and
these units create a lot of repair
work and parts sales. They also
generate an inordinate amount of
tech calls as a result of the problems with the design and misunderstood theory of operation. This
article will concentrate on the areas
that cause shops the most trouble
in diagnosis and repair.
The 247 is an evolution of design that started with units using
viscous couplings. The viscous
coupling would react to differences in wheel speed between the
front and rear axles and send
power to the wheels that needed it
until the slippage stopped and the

shaft speeds equalized front to
rear. These units were extremely
susceptible to differences in tire
size front to rear, and tires with
more than 14 inch difference in circumference would have the viscous coupling working overtime to
correct a slip that wasnt there.
This failed the viscous coupling
quickly, creating another expensive repair.
To advance the engineering,
New Venture replaced the viscous
coupling with what it called a
progressive coupler or pump
coupler (Figure 1). Under normal
road conditions most of the torque
is applied to the rear wheels; when
a speed difference between the
front and rear wheels occurs, the
progressive coupler acts as a differential to send power to the axle
with better traction, eliminating
wheel spin and restoring control
with no driver input.

In the NV 247 there are two
gerotor-type pumps. The main, or
lift, pump (Figure 2) takes fluid
from the sump and forces it
through the bearing bores and supplies the pump coupler or progressive coupler with pressurized lube.
The coupler is a sealed, non-serviceable unit that contains a second
gerotor pump and a clutch pack,
piston and pressure plate. The assembly acts as a differential, and
when there is wheel slip the difference in shaft speeds puts the pump
to work pressurizing the clutch
pack and sending power to the
front axle. When the shaft speeds
equalize, the pump stops working,
the pressure bleeds down and
power reverts to the rear wheels
only.

bind to literally stop one of these
vehicles in a turn.
So we want to use an aftermarket progressive coupler in the
transfer case, but we do not want
to deal with a binding condition on
turns. Here are the steps to take to
solve this problem and get the customer happily on his way:
1. Always measure the circumferences of all four tires with a
stagger gauge ($50). Any differences of more than 14 inch will
require tire replacement, as this
alone can fail the progressive
coupler.
2. Disassemble the gerotor lift
pump for cleaning and inspection. This pump is also sold only
as a complete assembly; no service parts are available.
3. Using a die grinder or a hacksaw blade, cut a bleed notch
(about 18 inch) in the pump surface (Figure 3). This allows oil to
bleed off more quickly and
cures any timing problems that
may influence the release rate of
the progressive coupler.
Reassemble the pump.
4. Make sure to use the correct
fluid for the 247, and when installing either OEM or aftermarket progressive couplers soak
the unit overnight in the correct
lube to get the clutches wet and
remove any air trapped in the
friction material or coupler.
5. Road-test the vehicle making
moderate to tight turns for a few
miles to make sure that the coupler is releasing properly. Some
slight initial binding is normal
but should go away within a
few miles of driving.
Understanding the theory of operation, being aware of the sensitive nature of the Quadradrive
system, and recognizing the critical
importance of tire sizes for correct
operation of the vehicle will go a
long way to sorting out your diagnosis and repair problems. TD

Unfortunately, there are five different sizes, and they
dont always go in the same spot on every valve body.
Each accumulator has at least one spring, sometimes
two, and the springs are not all the same. If these
parts are not marked or tagged during disassembly it
can be a real challenge to reassemble this valve body
correctly. See Figure 4 for accumulator identification.

These days, it seems that everyone is telling you to

think outside the box. When it comes to clutch
replacement, thats just not good advice. Many clutch

re you in a continual state

of being overwhelmed by
either having so many customers that you cant find adequate time to sell properly and do
for them everything they need, or
not having enough customers and
always being behind with the bills
you have and sometimes cannot
pay? Either scenario is not healthy
for you or your business. In fact,
the first could easily lead to the
second if not remedied. Not spending enough time with your good
customers and selling them what
they really need when they come
in for minor services can lose many
of them for you and put you in the
unenviable position of not having
enough customers to generate the
dollars you need.
In the first scenario you suffer
from the too busy to make
money syndrome in which you
have so many customers clamoring
for your attention that all you want
to do is get them in and out of the
revolving door as quickly as possible so that those who are waiting
dont freak out and go somewhere
else. This causes you to not check
cars thoroughly and focus on only
what the customer came in for, or
checking them but not selling
everything for fear of tying up lifts,
which would keep other customers
waiting too long.
Either way, you arent making
money. Youll have an awful lot of
repair orders but theyll all be
small, mostly routine services that

are not profitable. Even the quickoil-change shops cant make

money without selling add-ons,
and theyre set up to do an oil
change every 10 minutes; youre
not. You can, however, knock out a
brake job in almost the same time
it takes you to do an oil change because thats what youre set up to
do.
As a consultant I become very
disappointed in the owners or
service writers ability to sell when
I see a stack of tickets in a transmission or automotive shop with
nothing but oil changes on them. It
is such a waste of the shops time
and resources to get paid 0.3 hour
for the same amount of labor time
for which you would charge out
0.75 to more than an hour if it
werent labeled oil change and
get well over $100 labor for it plus
the markup on the parts.
So the first scenario has you losing money because you wont try
to sell the customer for fear of
tying up the car too long or worrying that they will think that every
time they come in for something
minor youll try to sell them something bigger. In the second scenario, which is even worse, you
make no money because you are
simply in fear of customers saying
no to either the job or your price
so you either dont try to sell it or
make a half-hearted attempt at it
thats the equivalent of or worse
than not trying at all.
Want to get out from under the
overwhelming? Take back control.

Take control of the shop, of the
customers but, most of all, of your
fears. For example, if youre afraid
of their being upset by your tying
up their car, give them a ride, a
loaner or a rental. You can afford
to do that if youre selling what
they need and at a profitable price.
If youre scared theyll think
youre selling them too much,
dont be, as long as everything
youre trying to sell is legitimate.
The little twinge of doubt is always
in the customers mind anyway, so
worrying about it wont do you
any good. Whenever possible base
your sale on the vehicle service
history along with what you find
diagnostically, as in: Mr. Johnson,
youre going to need rear brakes.
The pads are worn down and the
rotors are warped, but it only
makes sense. Its been over 40,000
miles since we last replaced those
brakes according to our computer
records. Would you prefer we have
the car ready by this afternoon or
would tomorrow be OK for you to
pick it up?
Your good customers should always be told what you find. The
only time you should try to force
them into buying now is if the
problem is critical to their safety or
that of others with whom they
share the highway. Other than that
they should have it explained and
be given the opportunity to buy

pair or service to sell you might

want to think about bundling a
couple of jobs with a small discount for letting you do them all
now or, in lieu of a discount,
throwing in a free oil change as an
incentive.
Either way, selling it now is far
more economical for you and your
customers than making them come
back to have something done that
could have been handled now.
Make sure they understand what
the economics of doing it that way
mean to them. Tell them how it
will save them time and money by
doing it all now. Dont ever be
afraid to brag about a benefit you
are giving a customer, and dont
think its so obvious that you dont
have to tell them what you did or
are doing for them. They wont get
it on their own. They arent tuned
in to looking for it so they have to
be told.
As far as your second-scenario
customers go, if they arent buying
you dont need them. Sounds radical, I know, but what good is a customer who wont let you make
money? If you check the history of
a customer who has normal
mileage on the car and find that
the only business you are getting is
oil changes and state safety and
emission inspections every year
while you have been making repair
and service recommendations all
along, its obvious hes taking the
gravy work somewhere else. Ask
him where and why the next time
he comes in. If he wont give you a
shot at the repairs on which you
can actually make some money,
fire him as a customer. All he is
doing is taking advantage of your
loss leaders while letting someone
else make the profit you should be
making from him. It may sound
harsh, but the last thing you need
is non-profit customers taking you
away from the ones with whom
you can make money but dont
think that you have the time to
service.
Another group that can overwhelm you is waiters. They
want to wait for the fluid change

and/or the tire rotation. They can
cost you in several ways. First,
they didnt come in planning to
leave the car for anything, so no
matter what else you find it will be
hard if not impossible to sell.
Second, they have nothing else to
do while they wait than talk to
you, your employees and other
customers, all of which can be costing you. Third, they give you the

continuous evil eye while they are

waiting, often making you give
them priority service just to get
them done and out of there. Look
at how that affects your business.
It takes your resources away from
good-paying jobs that have been
promised to do basically non-profit jobs just to get waiters out of
your face.

orque-converter rebuilders
have been reporting Honda
bearing failures in increasing
numbers. The bearing failures have
been from different locations within the converters and have been reported in most of the Honda and
Acura models. The most common
of the failures has been the bearing
between the impeller and stator in
the larger-diameter converters. In
all converters, the bearing in this
location carries most of the thrust
load when the vehicle is accelerating, and it is typically the first
bearing to fail. Because the largerdiameter converters are used in the
larger, higher-torque V-6 applications, the thrust loads on this bearing are even greater.
A root-cause analysis completed
on the failed bearings found that
although the thrust load on the
bearings was a factor, it was not
the primary cause of the bearing
failures.
The OE Honda bearing for this
application is an open-faced bearing that uses the thrust surface of
the flanged impeller hub as one of
its bearing races. The impeller hub
in Figure 1 is typical of a failed
unit.
A close inspection of the impeller hub in the failed converter
yielded several clues about the failure. The obvious discoloration
caused by overheating was the first
clue. The potato-chip wear pattern
was a second clue, and the wear
pattern that extended the entire
length of the circumference was a
third clue.

Since the Honda converters

are well known for their overheating issues, it would have
been easy to jump to the conclusion that the converter
overheating took the temper
out of the bearing surface of
the impeller hub and caused
the bearing failure. Converters
that have overheated enough
to turn blue have been hot
enough to alter the temper of
the metal. A check of the hardness of this surface
seemed to back up
this assumption. The

normal hardness of a
bearing race should
be in the 58-60
Rockwell range, and
the bearing surface of
this impeller hub was
as low as 50 Rockwell
at one point.
Although the overheating issue remained a good
candidate for causing
the temper loss, it was
not the only possibility. The hub in this unit was not the
original but a replacement. Now
the question became: Did the converter overheat enough to affect
the replacement hubs hardness, or
was the temper taken out of the replacement hubs bearing surface
during the installation welding
process? Testing the hardness of
the bearing surface of the impeller
hub before and after the weld
process would be necessary to answer this question.
Transmission Digest
The bearing

surface of a virgin
replacement impeller hub was
tested and fell
within the 58-60
Rockwell range.
The impeller hub
was then welded
into the impeller
and the hardness
was retested.
Starting at the beginning of the
weld and continuing about 75% of
the duration of the weld, the hardness remained in the 58-60
Rockwell range.
The hardness measured near the
last 25% of the weld was a different story. In this area, the hardness
varied by 10 Rockwell and at one
point dipped as low as 50
Rockwell. The results of the second
hardness test led to several conclusions. One was that the wear at the
entire circumference of the
bearing surface in Figure 1 was
probably caused by the loss of
temper during the weld process
and that the potato-chip distortion also was caused by the
same heat. A second conclusion
was that Honda had recognized
this issue and addressed it by
using a two-headed welder to
install all its impeller hubs
(Figure 2).
The third conclusion was
that it was time to either invest
in a two-headed welder or
source a suitable enclosed bearing to replace the Honda OE
bearing. Since two-headed
welders are quite expensive,
the enclosed bearing seemed to
be the better choice.
The bearing found between
the stator and impeller in most
RE5R05A converters (Figure 3)
is a good replacement bearing.
It is very robust, and dimensionally it is ideal for the application. It is 0.035 inch larger in
diameter than the cavity where
the OE bearing and wear plate
live, so a minimal cleanup of
the bore is all that is necessary to

fit the bearing into the stator
(Figure 4).
Continuing the machining
process to the bottom of the bore
also will provide plenty of lube oil
for good bearing life. The finished
product will look like Figure 5.
Another plus is that this bearing
is about 0.040 inch thicker than the
combined thickness of the OE bearing and wear plate. This extra

thickness allows you to either

clean up the wear on the OE impeller hub or remove the potatochip distortion of the replacement
hub caused by the welding

minor service without an appointment, ask, How long can you
leave it with me? Do it before
they have a chance to say they are
going to wait for it. Then offer a
ride home or to work. If they accept be sure you get a phone number at which you can reach them
just in case you find anything during your inspection. If they cant
leave the car today try to get them
to make an appointment to leave it
tomorrow instead of waiting.
If they insist on waiting, make
them wait. Dont pull a technician
off a good-paying job to accommodate a waiter with a non-profit
one. By making the waiter wait
longer there is a good chance that
next time he or she will take you
up on your offer to leave the car.
So you can be overwhelmed by
too many customers, not enough
customers, too many bills that you
cant pay or too many waiters eating up your resources. The good
news is that you can control most,
if not all, of these conditions by
slowing down and taking the time
to evaluate each situation, then
selling each customer what they
need at the price you need to be
profitable. This is not a race. The
fastest shop doesnt win; the mostprofitable one does.
How adamant are you about
closing a sale when you are 100%
certain they cant go on without
what you are offering? You look
people in the eye and say in no uncertain terms, You need this brake
job now! Notice how most, if not
all, of them go right along with
you. Why? Because they can sense
your belief in what youre selling.
Thats the same posture you
should take each time you really
want to close a sale. Say to yourself, They really need this and Im
going to make sure they get it.

youll never have another stressful
or overwhelming day, but it sure
will cut down on them a whole lot.

remanufactured GM front-axle actuator assemblies for latemodel 4WD and AWD SUVs. Jaspers actuator assembly
includes a new electric shift motor installed on the housing, two side gears that spline into the left and right axle
shafts, and a shift fork and collar for shifting the vehicle
into and out of four-wheel drive. The AWD actuator has a
metal plate covering the electric shift-motor mount.
Internally, the assembly uses a coupler
gear that connects
the two axle shafts for
all-wheel-drive mode.

from GM dealers, the

VBDaq Club Meets in Norway

Delegates from more than 10 European countries
who are dedicated to valve-body testing using the
Hydra-Test data-acquisition system attended the second annual VBDaq Club event on Oct. 15.
The event took place in Norway, a location chosen
to coincide with the opening of the new facility of
Transtec AS in Bryne, near Stavanger. Transtec owner
Per Egge was the first to install and operate the
VBDaq system and has worked closely with the systems developer, Cottingham Engineering, providing
invaluable in-the-field help and information on the
continued development of the system.

Bosch Aftermarket Unit to Acquire

SPX Service Solutions Business
The Bosch Automotive Aftermarket division plans
to acquire the Service Solutions business of SPX Corp.
Bosch has agreed to pay about $1.15 billion in cash for
the Service Solutions business, which develops, manufactures and sells diagnostic and service tools, workshop equipment and software for the global
automotive aftermarket.
Service solutions employs some 2,700 associates in
17 countries, primarily in the U.S., Germany, France
and China, and is expected to generate sales of about
$920 million for 2011. This makes the planned acquisition the largest in the history of Boschs Automotive
Aftermarket division. The transaction is expected to
close during the first half of 2012.
Acquiring SPX Service Solutions will help make
Bosch one of the leading providers of diagnostic solutions, said Robert Hanser, president of the
Automotive Aftermarket division. The acquisition
