product.
SECTION 3

PRECAUTIONARY LABEL INFORMATION

Rubber gloves and safety glasses or goggles are recommended. Eye-wash

fountains in the work place are strongly recommended.

SECTION 4

FIRST AID INFORMATION

Eyes:
Flush immediately with copious amounts of tap water or normal saline
(minimum of 15 minutes). Take exposed individual to a health care
professional, preferably ophthalmologist, for further evaluation.

Skin:
Wash exposed area with plenty of soap and water. Repeat washing. Remove
contaminated clothing and wash thoroughly before reuse. If irritation persists
consult a health care professional.
Inhalation:
Move the exposed individual to fresh air. If individual is cyanotic or has
difficulty breathing, administer oxygen, if available. Treat symptoms.
Ingestion:
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Rinse mouth with copious amounts of water or
milk. First, irritate the esophagus and dilute stomach contents by slowly
giving one (1) or two (2) glasses of water or ilk. Avoid giving alcohol or
alcohol related products. In case where the individual is semi-comatose,
comatose or convulsing, DO NOT GIVE FLUIDS BY MOUTH. In case of
intentional ingestion of the product seek medical assistance immediately;
take individual to nearest medical facility.
NOTE TO PHYSICIAN:
Due to the severely irritating or corrosive nature of the material, swallowing
may lead to ulceration and inflammation of the upper alimentary tract with
hemorrhage and fluid loss. Also, perforation of the esophagus or stomach
may occur, leading to mediastinitis or peritonitis and the resultant
complications. Mucosal injury following ingestion of this corrosive material
may contraindicate the induction of vomiting in the treatment of possible
intoxication. Similarly, if gastric lavage is performed, intubation should be
done with great care. If oral burns are present or a corrosive ingestion is
suspected by the patient's history, perform esophagoscopy as soon as
possible. Scope should not be passed beyond the first burn because of the
risk of perforation. This product contains materials that may cause severe
pneumonitis if aspirated. If ingestion has occurred less than 2 hours earlier,
carry out careful gastric lavage; use endotracheal cuff if available, to prevent
aspiration. Observe patient for respiratory difficulty from aspiration
pneumonitis. Give artificial resuscitation and appropriate chemotherapy if
respiration is depressed. Medical conditions that may be aggravated by
exposure to this product include diseases of the skin, eyes or respiratory
tract.
SECTION 5

HAZARDS INFORMATION

Eye: Causes eye irritation.

Skin: Causes skin irritation. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic reaction,
which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material.
Ingestion: May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and
diarrhea
Inhalation: May cause respiratory tract irritation. Because its vapor pressure
is negligible, it exists in the air only as a mist or spray.
Chronic: Repeated exposure may cause erosion of teeth. Repeated exposure
may cause sensitization dermatitis.

Mutagenicity: No information found
Neurotoxicity: No information found
SECTION 7
INFORMATION

ENVIRONMENTAL

TOXICOLOGICAL

Toxicity is primarily associated with pH. This product is toxic to Aquatic Life.
Sodium Hydroxide: LC50 (24-hr) = 25 ppm (Brook trout). LC50 (48-hr) = 33 100 ppm (Shrimp). LC50 (48-hr) = 220 - 1000 ppm (Cockle).
This material is not expected to bioaccumulate. Can be dangerous if allowed
to enter drinking water intakes. Do not contaminate domestic or irrigation
water supplies, lakes, streams, ponds, or rivers. Sodium Hydroxide has no
biological oxygen demand. (3) There is limited information available on the
environmental fate and effects of Sodium Hydroxide. Laboratory toxicity data

indicate that Sodium Hydroxide is moderately toxic to aquatic and terrestrial

organisms. The primary mode of action is due to the corrosive nature of this
chemical and its tendency to increase pH in poorly buffered environments.
Aquatic organisms become increasingly stressed as pH exceeds 9, with many
aquatic species being intolerant of pH levels in excess of 10. Increased pH
due to the introduction of Sodium Hydroxide into aquatic environments may
lead to the precipitation of essential micronutrients. Exposed terrestrial
species would be subject to skin irritation and burns due to the corrosive
nature of this material. Due caution should be exercised to prevent the
accidental release of this material to aquatic or terrestrial environments.

SPILL, LEAK AND DISPOSAL PROCEDURES

SPILL AND LEAK RESPONSE GUIDELINES

Important: When responding to spill or leak of this product, follow
recommendations contained in the Handling Precautions section (Section 11)
of this MSDS.
Initially minimize area effective by the spill or leak. Block any potential
routes to water systems (e.g., sewers, streams, lakes, etc.). Based on the
products toxicological and chemical properties and on the size and location
of the spill or leak, assess the impact on contaminated environments (e.g.,
water systems, ground, air equipment, etc.) There are no methods available
to completely eliminate any toxicity this product may have on aquatic
environments. Minimize adverse effects on these environments. Determine if
federal, state and/ or local release notification is required (see Regulatory
Classifications section of this MSDS). Recover as much of the pure product as
possible into appropriate containers. Later, determine if this recovered
product can be used for its intended purpose. Address clean-up of
contaminated environments. Spill or leak residuals may have to be collected
and disposed of. Clay, soil or commercially available absorbents maybe used
to recover any material that cannot readily be recovered as pure product.
Flushing residual material to an industrial sewer, if present at the site of a
spill or leak incident may be acceptable if authorized approval is obtained. If
product and/ or spill/ leak residuals are flushed to an industrial sewer, insure
that they do not come into contract with incompatible materials. Contact the
person(s) responsible for the operation of your facilitys industrial sewer prior
to intentionally flushing or pumping spills or leaks of this product to the
industrial sewer.
