SOME PROBLEM SOLVING TIPS
 Memorize the form and order of the answer choices. Since they will always be the same, having
them memorized ahead of time will save you time and stress on the GRE.

 Remember that you can simplify the comparison by doing the same (allowable) operations to both
columns. You can add or subtract the same numbers or variable from both columns with out
changing the relationship between them. You can multiply or divide by the same POSITIVE
quantity on both sides without changing their relationship.

 Read the information centered between the two columns if there is any. This tells what the
restrictions are on the variables. If you ignore it, you might end up choosing the fourth answer
choice (not enough info) in error.

 If there is no information centered between the two columns, then there are no restriction on the
values that a variable can take. In this case, consider what happens if you choose positive versus
negative values, odd versus even values, and integer versus fractional values. The GRE commonly
tests your knowledge of properties of these types of numbers.

 If the two columns contain only numbers and no variables, then the correct answer can never be the
fourth answer choice. If you see a problem like this on the GRE, look for short cuts to calculations.
Often you can compare the columns to a simpler third quantity, rather than compare them directly to
each other. People who score high on the GRE math section practice doing these problems with
tricks and short cuts.

 Remember that the GRE can test your knowledge of algebra, geometry, data interpretation,
arithmetic, and properties of numbers in these questions.

Good preparation for the quantitative comparisons, and the math section in general, includes
brushing up on these topics.
