OVERVIEW
• This is a Command Instrument Rating Test for the initial issue or renewal of a Command
Instrument Rating.
• This exercise is conducted at Melbourne (YMML) and Avalon (YMAV) on a Melbourne to
Avalon training sector where AVALON Airspace and Tower are active and Controlled
Aerodrome procedures apply.
OBJECTIVE(S)
PROFICIENCY CRITERIA
• Display satisfactory knowledge of Quiz and Discussion items as outlined in CASA Form
645 and the Lesson Guide.
• Perform normal and abnormal (non-normal) manoeuvres and procedures in accordance
with Aircraft Operating Procedures as outlined in the Lesson Guide.
• Safely operate under the IFR to the standard specified in CAO 40.2.1 APPENDIX I.
• Demonstrate sound handling of the A330 aircraft in various phases of flight.
BRIEFING
• Session to be conducted by a nominated Training Captain Category A or B.
• 60-minute briefing prior to commencement of this simulator exercise.
• Trainee renewing qualification with Instrument Rating that has expired for more than 12
months must complete the full Initial Instrument Rating Test.
• Crew complement for the Instrument Rating Test shall normally be:
1. Two Command Trainees.
2. One Command Trainee + One First Officer Trainee.
3. Two First Officer Trainees.
4. Trainee + nominated Support Pilot as approved by Training Management or CASA.

The renewal of an ILS endorsement shall renew a LLZ and VOR endorsement.
Where the Instrument Rating Test is a renewal there is no requirement for the trainee to
demonstrate proficiency for a Non ILS - DME or GPS ‘arrival’ procedure.
Non ILS Approach - RNAV (GNSS) may be omitted where the trainee has not completed RNAV
(GNSS) training.
For initial issue of Non ILS Approach - RNAV (GNSS) endorsement the RNAV (GNSS) Coordinated
Briefing must have been studied by the applicant prior to the session. A minimum of three
approaches must be conducted by the Captain and two by the First Office as per GNS1 Lesson
Plan.

Following successful completion of this exercise, Training Captains must ensure completion of
form 645 “Instrument Rating Application”, Command, Multi-Engine and Endorsed for ADF, VOR,
ILS, DME and RNAV (GNSS) as applicable. Signature required in Section F.
CAO 40.2.1 Para 5.1 states that an instrument rating remains in force for the period of one year from
the last day of the month in which the rating was issued or renewed.
CAO 40.2.1 Para 12.2 states that where an Instrument Rating has expired for a period of less than
12 months, an applicant may qualify for the issue of a rating by passing the instrument rating test
applicable to the renewal of the rating.
CAO 40.2.1 Para 12.3 states that where an Instrument Rating has expired for a period in excess of
12 months, an applicant may qualify for the issue of a rating by passing the instrument rating test
applicable to the initial issue of an Instrument Rating.
The Training Captain conducting this exercise must check the student’s licence to determine
whether they hold a DME endorsement. If not then the DME arrival sequence at the end of the
exercise must also be flown.

Approach: Expect Airwork (steep turns and flight on STBY instruments) followed by vectors to
Lloyd or Ripley to hold or ILS approach RWY 18 “manually flown with flight directors
off” followed by a Go Around.
The following DME arrival check is only required for initial Instrument Rating or
pilots whose Instrument Rating has been expired for more than 12 months. The
circling approach is mandatory and may be conducted after any instrument
approach. To save time this may be conducted after NDB RWY 16 with circling
to land RWY 34 at Melbourne during next sequence.
Go around for;
DME Arrival from the South followed by circling approach to land RWY 18 for
Captain; or
DME Arrival from the North followed by circling approach to land RWY 36 for First
Officer
