    Osteoporosis can be caused by a variety of factors including genetics, lifestyle, medical conditions, and medications. Some key risk factors include being Caucasian or Asian, having a family history of osteoporosis, low body weight or being immobilized, smoking, excessive alcohol use, a diet low in calcium or vitamin D, postmenopausal status without estrogen replacement, and long term use of corticosteroid medications. Advanced age is also a major risk factor for developing osteoporosis.
