“I AM” SAYINGS

“I AM” and (ego eimi)

Appears in the Synoptic Gospels:

• Matthew- 5 times
• Mark- 3 times
• Luke 4 times
The authority and identity of Jesus are expressed particularly in the Fourth Gospel
through sayings that employ the Greek formula ego eimi, which means I Am.
• Ego Eimi appears 30 times in the fourth Gospel
Background
• John uses ego eimi to echo past uses in the OT background
• Jesus has come to unveil the Father’s name for all of the world
• He comes in the name of the father and does all work in his Father’s name
• The son is not simply representing the father here but is also bearing the father’s
presence to the world
• Jesus is the Lord incarnate, and therefore bears his divine name
• Jesus’ name has power and significant because God himself is present in Jesus
• To glorify one is to glorify the other

Christology
• Jesus is clearly more than a mere human
• Jesus’ works are justified nor because some day the father will vindicate them, but
because Jesus is doing the Father’s work directly
• To dishonor the Son, is to offend the Father as well
• In the “I Am” sayings Jesus is openly applying the divine name of God to himself
• Jesus can work, speak, and act in the Father’s stead
John presents Christ to us by miracles and his teachings where Christ declares himself,
the “I am.”
“I am the bread of life.” - John6: 35.
• Jesus is the answer to those whose souls are hungering and thirsting after
righteousness.
“I am the light of the world.” - John8: 12.
“Before Abraham was, I am” - John8: 58.
• These people were determined to not follow Christ.
• Jesus pointed out to them the consequences of sin
o John 8:24-Death

Knowledge of the background of this term forces us to understand that unless one
believes Him for whom He says He is- the ego eimi- one will die in one’s sins. There is
no salvation in a false Christ. If we are to be united with Christ to have eternal life, then
we must be united with the true Christ, not a false representation. It is out of love that
Christ uttered John 8:24
