Camera Obscura
• Camera = Latin for room
• Obscura = Latin for dark
• Experimented with by Mo-Ti, Aristotle,
Alhazen, Leonardo Da Vinci, Giovanni Battista
Della Porta, Johannes Kepler.
• Used as a drawing aid and also an
entertainment and education room.
The Birth of Photography
• 1839 – invented simultaneously in Britain and France
• British W.H. Fox Talbot created the Calotype approach
• French L.J.M Daguerre created the Dauerreotype
approach.
• 1850’s Wet collodion technique – Scott Archer.
• 1860 George Washington Wilson makes first “quick
pictures”
• 1871 saw the invention of the dry plate – Richard Leach
Maddox
• 1888 Birth of Kodak and snapshot photography
