Characterization of Marigold by Eugenia Collier

Lizabeth seems to be a very depressing person. Whenever she thinks of the past she can only seem to remember the dust in her home town. (Pg.1 P1) In the opening paragraphs it hints that she truly regrets what she did in the past and can find no way to deserve forgiveness. (Pg.1 P2) She was very confused when she was a teenager and still seems to believe she has no idea why these things happened. I feel again the chaotic emotions of adolescence, illusive as smoke, yet as real as the potted geranium before me now. In the next couple of lines it foreshadows the drastic change she goes through to become a woman and her acceptance of it. Joy and range and wild animal gladness and shame become tangled together in the multicolored skein of 14-going-on-15 as I recall that devastating moment when I suddenly more woman than child, years ago in Miss Lotties yard. She knew that the great depression was going on but she wasnt worried because she always has lived in poverty; with no communications with the outside world she would never know how poor her lifestyle was. (Pg.1 P4) She may have been a very confused teenager but she still knew right from wrong and was ashamed of the jeering she did at Miss Lottie. (Pg.3 P36) All in all, these are the characteristics that make Lizabeth a diverse and open minded character. Joey is a very foolish but sensible character. Some of his thoughts oppose from each other. Tell you what, said Joey finally, his eyes sparkling. Lets us go over to Miss Lotties (Pg.3 P16) The fresh smell of early morning and of dew-soaked marigolds spurred me on as I went tearing and mangling and sobbing while Joey tugged my dress on my waist crying. Lisabeth stop. Please stop!(Pg.6 P60) Also, Joey is a very adventurous character. (Pg.6 P51) Joey is seemed to be shadowed as a very arrogant boy who was afraid of nothing. (Pg.1 P6) Sometimes, he did not have a sense of fear and become over ambitious. (Pg.4 P27) He seemed like a very persuasive character that would stop at nothing to get someone to follow his lead. (Pg.4 P27) These direct and indirect characterizations make Joey who he is.
