Part I.
In the municipality of Sta. Cruz, a girl named Marian was found in a small
deserted house near a river. Marian's aunt had kept her locked in a room from the
age of 2 years old until age 15. Marian was left in the custody of the nearest
relative when her parents died in an accident. She was in the room in a torn cloth
half-naked seated near the toilet bowl and left alone for days through the years.
Her aunt would visit her only to bring food and left again. No one was allowed to
visit her. There were no means of communication not even a radio. The only voice
she will hear is the voice of her angry aunt yelling with words of indecency upon
her visit. When Marian made a noise in the room, her aunt will run into her, beat
her to death and wish she was not left in her custody as she just an added mouth
to feed. As the result of maltreatment, Marian could not talk nor walk since she
was alone in the corner of a small room. She was undernourished, unrestrained
and her saliva continually flow from her mouth like crazy dog.
In the long years of being deprived from freedom and rights, she was rescued
by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). She undergone a
counselling through a psychologist. She was afraid and hesitant at first but was
also manifesting a sense of eagerness and curiosity to human contact. When she
felt threaten and frighten, she suddenly kept silence and acted wildly, scratching
and throwing object never utter any sound. Her lack of socialization was evident,
not only that she could not spoke but also obviously in the proper etiquette. Not

workers and psychologist helped her for several years, Marian was not able to
developed her ability to speak beyond a 4-year old and she ended up staying in

Part II.
A small family decided to reside in Sta. Cruz. They had a child named John. The
parents of John took good care of him.
John grew up in the guidance of his parents, relatives, and friends. His parents
assisted him on how to walk, allowing him to mimic the words they spoke, the way
they acted, and behaved.
John also learned other things through his own observation. One day, John saw
his neighbor took his father’s shovel without asking permission. He eventually copied
the same action towards his playmates’ toys and hide it in his room. His parents
reprimanded him for doing so because it was considered as inappropriate, and
explained to him the consequences of his action.
Years gone by, John turned into a teenager. He met, mingled and made friends
with the peer groups in school, campus organization, church and community
organizations like Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) that offered members the opportunity
to develop various social skills like empathy, sharing and leadership. They had
positive influences on him, including academic motivation and performance.
Growing-up, a pretty girl caught John’s attention, however, the girl seemed to be
a negative influence since she lead him to experiment with drugs, drinking,
vandalism, and stealing. John knew that those activities put his neighbor in jail.
Fortunately, John was able to avoid those influences because his parents were
strictly monitoring and supervising his activity in school and outside their home.
With the proper guidance of John’s parents, relatives, friends and community, he
grew up responsible, just and obedient in accordance to the culture, laws and norms.
He finished his studies, earned a decent living and became a productive citizen of the
country.
