The Final Lure

The Last Temptation of Christ is a novel written by Nikos Kazantzakis, first published in 1951. It follows the life of Jesus Christ from his perspective. The novel has been the subject of a great deal of controversy due to its subject matter, and appears regularly on lists of banned books. The central idea of the book is that Jesus, while free from sin, was still subject to every form of temptation that humans face, including fear, doubt, depression, reluctance, and lust. By facing and conquering all of man's weaknesses He struggled to do God's will, without ever giving in to the temptations of the flesh, which Kazantzakis argued in the novels preface. Synopis Jesus realizes he has been chosen to carry the messages of God, including tolerance and forgiveness, and is faced with great self-doubt. The Devil takes advantage of the situation, and Jesus is visited on the cross with hallucinations of what it might have been like had he chosen to lead an ordinary life. This film was

released amid great protest by conservative Christian groups that objected to scenes about Jesuss self-doubts and his hallucinatory visions of him enjoying sexual relations in a marriage with Mary Magdalene. Reaction "The Last Temptation of Christ" is among the most profound religious films ever made. The film is full of

deep, even dangerous ideas. Its complexity guarrantees extreme discussion, and many Christians would be reasonable in rejecting the film completely . But close examination reveals little inconsistency between the film and the central teachings of the Gospels. And even where discrepancies may exist, no film warrants the sort of violence that was directed toward this film and its makers...especially from the very people who claim to represent Christ himself.
