1 HUMAN ACTIVITIES THAT ENDANGER AN ECOSYSTEM A quality environment is an environment that fulfills the needs of living organisms and pollution is at the minimal level such that humans and other living things can live comfortably. A quality environment is important so that:1. Air is clean and fresh to safeguard the respiratory system. 2. Water is clean to safeguard aquatic life. 3. Forest is sustained to safeguard timber and the survivals of wild animals. 4. The natural environment is beautiful and scenic. 5. Topsoil continues to be fertile and not eroded to safeguard agricultural activities. The environment of organisms is made up of the biotic and abiotic components. The interaction between these 2 components allows living organisms to live in a dynamic equilibrium. Activities and development that are mismanaged will threaten and endanger the ecosystem.
Human activities that threaten the ecosystem are:1. Deforestation (global effects include soil erosion/landslides /flashfloods/severe climatic changes/loss of global diversity/greenhouse effects and global warming) 2. Burning of fossils foils( leads to greenhouse effects and global warming, air pollution) 3. Overuse of fertilizes in intensive farming (leads to eutrophication and water pollution) 4. Dumping of domestics and industrial wastes (leads to water pollution) Unplanned development and mismanaged development have adverse impact on the ecosystem such as:1. Soil erosion-topsoil is removed causing the land to be unsuitable for farming activities. 2. Flash floods-sudden and rapid floods in low lying areas due to poor surface run-off causing loss of lives and property. 3. Landslides-a sudden fall of rocks and earth down a hill slope due to an unstable hill slope causing disruptions to infrastructure, transportation and loss of lives and property. 4. Eutrophication-rapid algae growth in an aquatic system due to artificial nutrient enrichment causing waterways to be blocked and light penetration in ponds. 5. Deforestation-the permanent of removal of trees from forents.
8. Thinning of the ozone layer 9. Extinction of the flora and fauna /wildlife 10. Severe climatic changes
