Jack and The Beanstalk
Jack and The Beanstalk
ONCE upon a time there lived a poor widow who had an only son named Jack. She was very poor, for times had been hard, and Jack was too young to work. Almost everything they have had been sold to buy bread, until at last there was nothing lef. Only the good cow, Milky White, remained, and she gave milk every morning, which they took to market and sold. But one sad day Milky White gave no milk, and then things looked bad indeed. One morning, Jack s mother told Jack to take their cow to market and sell Milky White. But, on the way, Jack met a man. He gave Jack some magic beans for the cow. Jack took the beans and went back home. When Jack s mother saw the beans she was very angry. How disappointed the poor widow was. She threw the beans out of the window. So poor Jack went to bed without any supper, and cried himself to sleep. When he woke up the next morning, the room was almost dark, and Jack jumped out of bed and ran to the window to see what was the matter. The sun was shining brightly outside, but beside his window there was growing a great beanstalk, which stretched up and up as far as he could see, into the sky. He went outside and started to climb the beanstalk. He climbed up to the sky through the clouds. A little way off there was a great castle. He went inside, and heard someone knock at the front door, which seemed to shake even the walls of the castle. "Fee, fi, fo, fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman; Be he alive, or be he dead, I'll grind his bones to make my bread!" Jack ran into a cupboard. An enormous giant came into the room and sat down. On the table there was a hen and a golden harp. Lay! said the giant. The hen laid an egg it was made of gold. Sing! said the giant. The harp began to sing. Soon the giant was a sleep. Jack jumped out of the cupboard. He took the hen and the harp. Suddenly, the harp sang, Help, master!! The giant woke up, and shouted, Fee,Fi,Fo,Fum!! I smell the blood of an Englishman; Be he alive, or be he dead, I'll grind his bones to make my bread!" Jack ran and started climbing down the beanstalk. The giant came down after him. Jack shouted, Mother!! Help!! Jack s mother took an axe and chopped down the beanstalk. The giant fell and crashed to the ground. Nobody ever saw him again. What became of the giantess and the castle nobody knows. With the golden eggs and the magic harp, Jack and his mother grew very rich and lived happily ever after.
