About IGIDR

Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) is an

advanced research institute established in 1987. The campus, sprawling
over a 14-acre lush green hillside, was inaugurated by the then Prime
Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi. The Institute is fully funded by the Reserve
Bank of India and has been recognized as a Deemed University.
Equipped with state of the art facilities and well renowned faculty,
IGIDR offers its students unparalleled training in economic theory
coupled with quantitative analysis.

The Institute has been a pioneer in research on Economics and

Development related issues in the last two decades. IGIDR has made its
presence felt both in the government and the corporate sector, with
students holding important positions in the academia, consumer and
corporate banking, investment banking, analytics, research cells and
government bodies. It works in collaboration with United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP), and World Bank among many
others, and is known for its various publications such as India
Development Report.

The focus has been to carry out research in game theory, international
trade, agricultural economics, labour, industrial organization, financial
sector, energy, environment, public economics and macroeconomic
policies.

The library is undoubtedly the best professional research sanctuary in

India and houses an exhaustive collection of books, journals and
references.

The campus offers a unique ambience conducive for academic, social

and cultural enrichment of students. It boasts of a number of student
societies to promote various co-curricular activities and recreational
facilities throughout the year. The Sports Club, Cultural Club, Movie
Club, Newsletter Forum and the Alumni Cell bring out the best in each
student and contribute to their overall development.
 Life At IGIDR
SPORTS CLUB

The sports club at IGIDR offers the following recreational

facilities - Swimming, Cricket, Table-Tennis, Badminton,
Tennis and Chess. A well-equipped Gymnasium is another
highlight of the campus.
The Annual Sports Meet brings together the faculty, staff and
students in healthy competition and is one of the most
awaited events on campus.

CULTURAL CLUB

Dance, Music, Debating, Poetry, Theatre and other forms of

art are highly encouraged and have found a pride of place in
IGIDR. Cumulative efforts of faculty, staff and students
culminate in much awaited events such as Independence
Day and Annual Day among others. IGIDR is also actively
involved with SPIC MACAY.

MOVIE CLUB

The Movie Club is one of the most proactive and popular

clubs in IGIDR. It screens movies ranging from mainstream to
alternative cinema. The weekend screening provides the
students a chance to rejuvenate after a hectic week of
lectures.

Academic Program & Course Structure

Selection procedure:
IGIDR is unique amongst the top rung Economics schools in way of its selection procedure that
tests candidates on a more comprehensive multi-dimensional scale comprising of knowledge
and understanding of Economics, Mathematics & Statistics and Linguistic & Logical abilities.
The selection procedure involves a written and is followed by an interview for the shortlisted
candidates.
Only 2 percent of the total applicants make it to the institute.

IGIDR offers the following programs:

These programs are ideal for those students who are desirous of bringing their knowledge to
the study of development. Students with background of economics and other disciplines such
as engineering, science, management etc. are encouraged to join the programs.

Course Structure:
The academic program at IGIDR necessitates students to familiarize themselves with software
packages, data analysis packages and databases.

M.Sc is a 4 Semester (16 Courses) program which imparts to students a comprehensive and
hands-on training in Economics, with special emphasis on analytical and problem solving skills
as well as exposure to emerging policy issues at the national and international levels.

The M.Phil Program requires the completion of ten courses (at least six core courses) along with
the submission of a dissertation.

it subscribes to over 460 national and international
journals. It has established contacts with over 100
national and international organizations for
exchange of the Institute's publications and inter-
library loan arrangement.

The computing facilities at IGIDR include a state-of-the-

art computer center with latest hardwares, networking
equipments, softwares and help desk facility. The whole
campus is WiFi enabled and connected to internet
through total 9 MBPS leased line with two backup ISP on
load balancing.

 Placement Process

PLACEMENT CELL
The Placement Committee, a student body at IGIDR, working in tandem with the faculty placement
committee, provides a platform for students seeking recruitments. Since its inception in 2004, the
Placement Cell has successfully maintained a 100% placement record.
The Placement Committee also monitors the Summer Internship Program (May-July) for the 1st Year
M.Sc students.
The Placement Committee cordially invites corporate firms, banks, research organizations, government
institutions and non-government institutions to recruit at IGIDR.

FINAL RECRUITMENT
The Second Year students from the M.Sc and M.Phil streams sit for final placements during the
placement week. The Final Placement Week for this academic year is tentatively scheduled from 12th to
th
16 December 2011. The placement process typically involves a Pre-Placement Talk in October/
November followed by a visit by the company during Placement Week for recruitment.
During the Pre-Placement Talk, companies are required to indicate the profiles and kind of
compensation they will be offering, and the locations they are recruiting at. Companies give Pre
Placement Talks to the students on campus before the final placement process.
The slot that the company will be allocated during the Placement Week will depend
upon the preference of the students and the relationship that the company shares with IGIDR.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

In addition to final placements, companies and research organizations also hire first year M.Sc students
for summer internships.
Interviews for summer interns also take place alongside final placements during the placement week.
The rounds in the summer internship process are similar to the final placement process. However,
companies are free to tailor it as they deem fit.
