Brenbon ~mall

Hello, bass playing friends. I'm writing this introduction as myself, Brendon Small. Not as William Murderface, or Nathan Explosion or Skwisgaar Skwigelf, or Dick "Magic Ears" Knubbler,.p~t me. Brendon Small-a humble, "nearly handsome" yet pasty, aging man in denial of his nerd-dom but fully realized as a creative, gifted super-genius and hero to those without a voice. So do please realize the importance of this lifting of my protective veil to speak to all of you Earth people as if I were one of you ... I've spent well over the last five years during the production of Metalocalypse ruthlessly making fun of bass players ... well, making fun of ONE bass player-William Murderface. But let's be honest, he deserves it. I've cut out more jokes from episodes than you'll ever hear in a lifetime in an effort to show a smidgen of fairness. The sad truth is that I wield the power to turn off a new generation of bass players. But can you imagine the backlash I'd get from the woofer industry? I don't need to be a pariah. (A "pariah" is like a guy who takes the blame for stuff-I realize bass players are reading this so I'll make sure to leave in definitions f or b.Igger wor d s.) Aw, c ' mon, I' m k'dd' ..... ling 11111 The truth is, however: I absolutely adore the bass guitar. I love playing it, I love that I've learned more about it in the last five years than I have at music school, I love arranging with the bass in mind, I love traditional figured bass (which you'll hear all over Dethklok). I love the bass. I REAllY love the bass. I do. I hope that doesn't ruin the whole Murderface joke. But I wondered why it came easy to make fun of bass in the show. Was it because I am a guitarist first? For years, I thought like a lot of guitarists do about the bass. So many rock/metal guitarists think of the bass as a dumber, fatter guitar-a guitar that's fat and

depressed. A fat guitar who's having a hard time getting over a relationship, that stopped exercising and ate its feelings, and now it's fat. A fat idiot. A fat idiot that's not allowed to even take solos (unless you're in Weather Report-but ass Viking. Bass, to me, used to be a chubby guitar. But I don't see it that way now. It's a totally different instrument. It is its OWN instrument. NOT A GUITAR.A powerful, beautiful, independent hero that could crush you if it wants to-but doesn't because it's better than you. It is its own instrument, with its own laws and it's a really dumb government, but that's because it's a bass rules and ecosystem and government-sure, then you HAVE to be in Weather Report). But I was wrong. It's not fat. It's just a little husky. Big boned. Powerful. like a Thor. like Conan the Barbarian. like a totally powerful butt-kicking bad-

government. .. Aw, c'mon, I'm KIDDING!!! It would be a smart government. There. You happy? Annnnyway. I truly love bass and I love all of you. Well, some of you. And I think "love" is appropriate. Thank you for checking this book out and I hope uh... I hope you all are good? ight be a strong

word based'on my own personal commitment issues. But I'd have to say that, in this particular case, "love"

You know what they say in show business: Never follow a dog, a child, or a comedian with a music degree. But here goes anyway. Ever since I've been fortunate enough to be a part a the extended, dysfunctional Metalocalvpse family. I've had people come up to me and blurt out, "You're Murderface!" "Easy there, friend," I respond. "I'm not Murderface. It's just my job to make him sound good." And as anyone who follows Dethklok knows, that is a very, very, very tall order. In a way, I've been practicing all my life for this impossible mission. I'm not joking. Not totally, anyway. I've always loved metal. When I was a teenager, I dutifully practiced my gallops and worked out some fingerstyle techniques-right hand flicking, left hand muting, whatever it took-specifically so I could play along with early Metallica and Slayer records. Then it all went on the shelf for nearly 20 years... until Brendan Small called me for this gig. Finally, I was going to join a real metal band. Well, almost a real one. When Dethklok plays live, we're their pit band. We're there to serve them. to make them sound great. I'm like Murderface's very own bass-playing Klokateer. He actually glowers down at me while I'm playing, with death eyes that whisper, "Hey, you hired gun muzo jackoff, you'd better not &%*@#$ up down there." I do 't do might actually kill me if I played a wrong note, or if he didn't get served his second lunch on time.
t

that he

In all seriousness, it's my job to not only play Murderface's (OK-Skwisgaar's) bass lines right, but

sure that Dethklok sounds just as massive live as they do on the records. When Brendan makes a Det stacks the tracks with tens, hundreds, thousands of guitars, just as a proper metal album should have. tracks the bass, and it's important that the role of the bass is properly fulfilled, but also that it doesn't uddy up the heaviness of the riffs, or the layered texture of the guitars, or the clarity of the kick drums. Sometimes that means keeping the bass line more rhythmically sirT)plethan the actual riffs in the song. Lesscan be more. But not when we're playing live. We don't ave a hundred guitarists up there. We ve got two: Brendon and Mike it takes to fill out the sound and

Keneally. Playing bass for live Dethklok means sometimes acting as a third guitar, adding overdrive, making the bass lines more closely mirror the guitar riffs, adding melodic content-whatever mai~tain the brutality required to send a respectable portion of our fans to the hospital. Fortunately for me, Brendon isn't just open to tha hole concept, he actually encourages it, trusting me to adel

and even rearrange many of the bass lines for liv~ performance. And fortunately for all of us, the actual material that Brendon writes for Dethklok is just plain awesome melodic aeath metal, with crushing riffs and rich harmonic structures and complex song forms that beg for e bellishment and reward' epeated listening. It really is the metal I waited my whole life to play, evejJif I have to do it while Murderface looks down at me in disapproval. eu'li fi full bass transcriptions for four "live arrangem s" of Deth 10ktunes ift this book. Check them out,

compare them to the studio versions-and, for God's sake, have fun with them. If you're not having fun playing this music. you're doing it wrong. Finally, for anyone who's expecting to see Murderface's bass solo in these pages: Sorry, but no. The transcriber refused to write the TAB. Faithfully not Murderface. I remain,

Bryan Beller is currently the best bass player in rock and roll. I say that with nothing to gain but absolute truth. I had the pleasure of playing with him on stage so many nights with Dethklok, and his attention to detail, his musicality, his jaw dropping technique. and his absolute LOVEfor his instrument should be an inspiration to us all. He is a master of the bass and a good friend. Irs a total honor to h.~,'!.~ be a part of my ridiculous world. Pay attention him to his words and note his differences between the recorded and live versions of the songs-he made the music better with his adjustments and'helped me learn a lot about the instrument. Now go learn some cool stuff and be the best that you can be!
