Primary Election is August 14
Polling places will be open 7 am to 8 pm on Tuesday, August 14, for the 2012 Primary Election. The outcome of the Primary Election determines which candidates appear on the official ballot in the General Election on November 6, 2012. Absentee Voting for the Primary Election If you will be absent from your precinct on August 14 or are prevented from getting to a polling place due to an illness or disability, or religious observance, you may vote by absentee ballot. To request an application for an absentee ballot, visit or call City Hall at 952-935-8474 (Monday-Friday 8 am- 4:30 pm) through August 13. You will receive your ballot upon completing the application and returning it to City Hall. Absentee voting can be done in person or by mail. City Hall will be open on Saturday, August 11, from 10 am to 3 pm, and Monday, August 13, until 5 pm for absentee voting. Beginning August 21, 911 emergency calls will be handled by the Hennepin County Sheriffs Office. Hopkins will join most of the other cities in Hennepin County who have their police and fire dispatch through the County Sheriffs Communications Division. Hopkins in Motion
Hopkins in Motion will be sponsoring a number of activities throughout the year to encourage residents to be active year round. The first Hopkins in Motion activity in 2012 will be held at Shady Oak Beach on Saturday, August 11th. Attendees who walk or ride their bikes to the beach that day will receive FREE admission, along with FREE use of canoes and kayak equipment. There will also be reduced prices on healthy snacks. Those interested in a group activity can participate in a Police Bike Patrol led bike ride to Shady Oak Beach that day. The ride will leave the Depot Coffee House at 10:00 am that morning. The Hopkins Fire Department is currently offering FREE CPR and AED classes to the community to increase survival from sudden cardiac arrest. The 1 hour class will allow attendees to learn and practice adult handsonly CPR and AED use. This course does not offer certification but focuses on teaching students the necessary skills to save a life. The classes are completely free! All classes will be held at the Hopkins Fire Department, 101 17th Avenue South. Savor the Hometown Flavor at the Hopkins Farmers Market, Saturdays, 7:30 am to noon through October, located just south of the clock tower.

The 4th Annual Hopkins Arts Festival, on July 7th and 8th, drew in approximately 17,000 attendees during the 2 day event. The Festival included 59 artists. Concerts in Downtown Park and childrens art activities added to the energy, as well as a car show on Sunday. Channel 5 and Channel 9 both captured footage of the event and featured it on their news casts. The Hopkins Arts Festival is presented by the Friends of the Hopkins Center for the Arts. In addition to bringing art and activity to downtown, proceeds support free art exhibitions and other programming at the HCA. Channel 5 also covered the recent opening for Velocity 2: The Art of Motion. The exhibition and invitational car show at the Hopkins Center for the Arts attracted 1,000 people on Mainstreet on June 30th.
