KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North FLOODING ISSUES

Although I was pushing for an immediate Council meeting to discuss the flooding issue, other Councillors and staff felt it would be better to wait until more information is available. Staff has indicated they will have an analysis of the various causes of the flooding for each area involved by the end of August. Council will be briefed on the report on September 2nd and I will be working with the other west end Councillors to set up a public meeting to present those findings and start the discussion on what can be done to end these floods. In the meantime I have urged staff to start with work that can be done quickly, such as sealing sanitary sewer manholes in areas prone to ponding. Many Kanata residents have experienced a number of floods, both in Glen Cairn and in Beaverbrook. To help those who can no longer get sewer back-up insurance a fund has been set up. Donations can be made at any Scotiabank or City Client Service Centre. Taxable receipts will be provided for any donation of $10 or more. Thanks to Scotiabank for starting the fund with a $1,000 donation. Application forms to access some of these funds are available at my office, the Client Service Centre at 580 Terry Fox, Scotiabanks in Kanata/Stittsville, the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre and local libraries. The purpose of this fund is to quickly provide some financial support to those in greatest need. Filing a claim against the City can take time and people need help now. A week after the heavy rainfall I was informed of problems in rental townhouse areas. I immediately contacted City staff who sent investigators to go to each unit, as well as health professionals to provide information. This was done on the Sunday and Monday of the long weekend. If you have not reported water in your basement, even if not from a sewer backup, please report it to 311. Knowing all incidents will help in determining the causes of the flooding and the work that needs to be done to prevent it in the future.

RETURN OF THE MAYOR

The Mayors charges and trial were an embarrassment to the City and I am pleased that he was found not guilty of all charges. Now we can settle down and get on with dealing with issues affecting the City, from the floods to economic development.

DEVELOPMENT ALONG KANATA AVE

Development has restarted on the Broughton Subdivision at Kanata Ave and Terry Fox Dr. I was disappointed that the approved plan required major removal of rock with the result that existing trees, other than those on the park block, could not be saved. I was able to get staff to require additional tree planting to partially restore the trees. The plan for the Richardson Lands to the west will retain large treed areas and provide nearly 30% open space. Zoning on the property adjacent to Insmill Cres. will be at the Planning Committee on August 25th. Staff have incorporated some of the concerns expressed by residents by prohibiting fast food and take-out restaurants and providing a major set-back for a full service restaurant.

CROSSING GUARDS AND SCHOOL SAFETY

A second crossing guard will be located at Jack Donohue School this fall at Penrith and McBrien. I will be asking for an evaluation at Klondike and Marconi for the new South March School but the earliest it could be provided is Sept. 2010. Construction will start soon on Sandhill Road from the church to Klondike, including providing a sidewalk on the school side of the road. City staff has contacted the developers in the area to have sidewalks provided along Klondike and Marconi prior to the opening of school.

MASTER RECREATION PLAN

If you havent submitted your views on what should be included in a Master Recreation Plan for the City please do so. The deadline for submissions is August 15th. Go to ottawa.ca/recreation to review the white papers and submit your ideas.
