CAPTAIN SHOUTS FORE!
What an honour to play with Alec Saunders in his 500th game, then to present him with his badge and Brian Thorp with his 50 year tie. The National Chairman, Mark Philp came up especially for the event, which was a tting touch. Regrettably, Alec achieved another rst in that he and Mark became the rst winners of the year against the Captains. A big vote of thanks to Parkviews Captain, Mike Sham, for making up an extremely pleasant 4-ball and for hosting us on his course, which as always was in superb condition. Thanks also to the green keeping staff and the hospitality shown to us by one and all! Playing the 18th with a full gallery of rogues cheering Alec on and jeering the rest of us on, was almost like playing the 18th on the nal day at Zim Nationals, where the Cowboy Bar always overlooks the last green! The response to the Away Tours Questionnaire has been very poor and I have had a few comments from people regarding the wording of some of the questions. We are therefore going to reword it and send it out again, or perhaps simply come and interview you at the next monthly game to get the feedback. We are looking at spicing up some of the old faithful tours, to make them more attractive, as the attendance has been dropping in recent years. The big question is are people not attending because they no longer have the time, or is it because the tours have become too expensive? The AGM is to be held next month and formal notices will be sent out to you shortly. However, in the meantime, you have already been invited to put forward nominees for Vice Captain and JVC. If anyone would like to propose any candidates, we would welcome the nominations.

BLAKES BLAH! BLAH!

MONTHLY GAME
This week I did something that Ive never done before, in 40+ years of Nomads (other than playing at a National Tournament), and that is to play the same course twice in the same week. Denis Hutchinson was the Guest Speaker at our Captains Dinner on Tuesday evening and as it was a freebee from him we thought we would treat him to a round of golf and Spero chose to play at Parkview. As a matter of interest Hutchy broke his age by shooting 78 (he turned 80 in March) and he really is a thief off a 10 handicap. Parkview is in superb nick especially the greens and despite the practice round of 36 points, I only managed 33 points on the Nomads day. Our thanks go to Joe de Klerk (a fellow Nomad and the current Club President) for the superb snacks after the game. Congratulations to Alec Saunders on playing his 500th Nomads game, these Cyril Ferarr and Phil van Acker on receiving their 35-year ties, Alec Lewis Williams his 25-year and Charles Stilwell (the baby) his 15-year tie. Thank you Mark Philp, the incumbent National Chairman, for making an extra trip to Gauteng Nomads to do the two special awards. We were also honoured by the presence of National Secretary Les Floyd, National Treasurer Derek Browne and Honorary Life Member Joss Hamilton (Joss is going to be transferred to Gauteng Nomads). Many thanks to Syd Rickhoff for a s n ap py f i n e s s e s s i o n , a g re a t improvement with just two group fines and I missed the 2nd one having already played 500 games! BIRTHDAY & ANNIV WISHES Trevor Baillie and Dave Milton 75 Andrew & Yvonne Souris 25th JUST ME The Captains Dinner, held at The World of Beer, was a great evening thoroughly enjoyed by 90 people. The S.A.B. beers, the Bells whisky and the Kleinhoekkloof wines owed, the supper was most enjoyable and we were entertained by the dulcet tones of Denis Hutchinson. Thanks to the Northerns and the Easterns Nomads who made up the numbers on the evening but such a pity that there werent more of our newer members there, joining in. Jimmy and Sally Littlewoods grandson was injured in Afghanistan but Im happy to report that he is back home safely, in England. Happy New Year and well over the Fast to all of our Jewish members (their numbers have diminished quite considerably since the time I joined Nomads). Congratulations to Doug Watson on being elected to Honorary Life Vice President of Randpark Golf Club. Jerome Davis, our 2007 Captain, played his last game at Parkview and he played in a unique fourball with the following statistics:3 Past Captains, Total years of Nomads 162, Total games played 1621, Total years married 190, Total ages 293, that should take some beating.

were played over 43.5 years at a magnificent average of 11.49 games per year (some of you cant manage to do that for 1 year!). Alec, we all wish you good health and good golfing as you head towards your next Nomads golf achievement. Another superb award on the evening was that of Brian Thorp receiving his 50year tie. Unfortunately Brian is no longer able to play golf due to back trouble (he has however played 387 games) and it was great that he remembered and was there to receive this award. Congratulations also to

CONGRATULATIONS TO Ryan & Jennifer White on the occasion of their wedding (apologies as I missed it on the 7th July 2012), father and fellow Nomad Ralph advised me somewhat belatedly! CONDOLENCES TO

John Welsh on the passing of his wife Rhea, our thoughts and prayers go out continues... to you.

Congratulations to Norman Leys who was, at last, given the Derrick Transell Trophy for being the highest Gauteng Nomads scorer at this years National Tournament. At last our Captain has lost a bet, in his monthly Nomads game fourball, and we wont be hearing that chirp again for the remaining three months (well done Mark and Alec). I must mention that the day after his recent 70th wedding anniversary Joe Civin had his 93rd birthday and he is still playing golf every Tuesday and Saturday at Benoni Country Club. We all wish that this would continue for some years into the future.

a friend would like to help Spero reach his target please give him a ring NOW. Please remember that the next monthly game, at Roodepoort, will be played on Wednesday the 17th October.

We regrettably have to say goodbye to Frank Leenaerts, Keith Wrede, Otto Redlich and Jonny Davis, all of whom have resigned (in good standing) from Nomads. Spero is still looking for Race Day Sponsors at R10 000.00 per race, this amount includes for a table of 10 at the Race evening. If you, your company or

Nominations are out for Vice Captain and Junior Vice Captain, so if you have someone in mind please have the form lled in, signed and submitted to Marius de Jager or Bev a.s.a.p. It was good to see 120 names on the original timesheet for Parkview. We all know that times are tough out there but considering that neither the Subs or the Playing Fee have been increased for 2013, perhaps a few more of you stragglers will play a few more games in the coming year. Never forget that the more you participate the more you will enjoy your Nomadic years. THE HOMELESS MAN A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabbylooking homeless man who asked him for five dollars for dinner.

The man took out his wallet, extracted five dollars and asked, If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead? No, I stopped drinking years ago. the homeless man said. Will you use it to gamble instead of buying food? the man said. No, I dont gamble. the homeless man said. I need everything I can get just to stay alive. Will you spend the money on green fees at a golf course instead of food? the man asked. Are you NUTS! replied the man. I havent played golf in 20 years! Well, said the man, Im not going to give you five dollars. Instead, Im going to take you home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife. The homeless man was astounded, Wont your wife be furious with you for doing that? I know Im dirty and I probably smell pretty bad. The man replied, Hey, man, thats okay! I just want her to see what a man looks like whos given up beer, gambling and golf!
