By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Edgewater, Md., residents Adri Eathorne
and Kim-May Hinken arrived at Anne
Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis to visit
their friend, Scott Bowling, shortly before the
polls closed at 8 p.m. on Election Day. The
three of them nervously awaited the results
of the referendum on Marylands same-sex
marriage law as the slowly began to trickle in.
More than four hours later, they learned
Question 6 had narrowly passed.
We closed his hospital room door,
Eathorne, who has been with Hinken nine
years, says. We closed his hospital room
door so we could [yell] Yeah! and high-
ve each other and hug and kiss and cry.
The passage of Question 6 by a 52-48
percent margin on Nov. 6 capped off an
anxious night of waiting for the hundreds
of people and dozens of reporters who had
gathered at the Baltimore Soundstage.
One of Gov. Martin OMalleys staffers
wrote on a napkin during lunch on Election
Day that the referendum would pass with
53 percent support. Congressman Elijah
Cummings made the same prediction
during an interview with the Washington
Blade earlier in the day outside a
Northeast Baltimore polling place at which
the governor, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie
Rawlings-Blake and Brendon Ayanbadejo
of the Baltimore Ravens greeted voters.
I had a pretty good sense as we were
heading into Election Day that it was
going to hold, OMalley said in a Blade
interview this week. I had a pretty good
sense in the course of those last 10 days
that it was on a good positive trajectory.
Josh Levin, campaign manager for
Marylanders for Marriage Equality, was
backstage with the governor, Rawlings-Blake
and several other elected ofcials watching the
results come in. President Obama had already
won re-election by the time Politico reported
shortly before midnight that Question 6 had
passed with 84 percent of precincts reporting.
Levin and others remained hesitant
to declare victory because Montgomery
County had yet to report election results.
(Question 6 passed in the county by a 65-
35 percent margin.)
Once we gured that out then I started
breathing a little more deeply, OMalley says.
Then when the Montgomery County numbers
came in and we were up to 51 [percent,] the
night seemed to be coming into perspective.
We were very reluctant to claim a victory of
course until we had enough of the numbers in.
Levin last week, while cleaning out
Marylanders for Marriage Equalitys
Baltimore ofce, says Question 6 was
leading throughout the night.
We watched it grow to 45,000 votes
or so, he says. It shrank at one point to
about 12,000. But right around midnight
we felt like we had a pretty good sense of
where things were. And so I went back to
talk through what still could happen, whats
still out, where do we think thats coming
from and made the decision to go up on
stage and declare victory from there.
There was condence once the results
started to come in, says gay state Sen. Rich
Madaleno (D-Montgomery County.) There
was condence all night long, its just a
matter of when do you say it. And because
we had never won before, theres no desire
to jinx yourself. I think youre more cautious
than you would have ever been.
The Washington Post projected
Question 6 had passed just as OMalley,
Rawlings-Blake, Levin and others took
to the stage to declare victory. Those
gathered inside the Baltimore Soundstage
became euphoric when lesbian state
Del. Maggie McIntosh (D-Baltimore City)
announced the referendum had passed.
People began to cry. Gay state Dels. Luke
Clippinger (D-Baltimore City) and Heather
Mizeur (D-Montgomery County) were
among those who started dancing once
the governor and other dignitaries stepped
away from the podium.
OMalley instrumental in fundraising
Election Day capped off a long and
often tumultuous effort for Marylands
same-sex marriage advocates that began
in 1997 when three state lawmakers
introduced the rst bill that would have
allowed nuptials for gays and lesbians.
Equality Maryland, which nearly closed in
June 2011, and the American Civil Liberties
Union in 2004 led a lawsuit on behalf of
Lisa Polyak and Gita Deane and eight other
same-sex couples and a gay widow who
sought the right to marry in the state. The
Maryland Court of Appeals in 2007 ultimately
upheld the constitutionality of the states ban
on marriage for gays and lesbians.
State lawmakers in 2011 narrowly
defeated a same-sex marriage bill,
but legislators approved it in February.
OMalley signed the law on March 1.
The governor soon emerged as the laws
most prominent supporter, especially after
the Maryland Marriage Alliance collected
more than 160,000 signatures to force a
referendum on the issue. Marylanders
for Marriage Equality turned to OMalley,
among others, in early August to help
bolster their then-anemic fundraising efforts.
We found ourselves in a situation where
polling looked good, we felt good about
what we were building, but we simply werent
bringing in money at the rate that we needed
to, Levin says. We as a campaign and with
our board members we sort of rang the bell
a little bit and talked to the governor, got
Maggie McIntosh more involved. The ACLU
redoubled their efforts. And I think brought
to bear all the efforts that helped us [reach]
the nancial goals that we needed to.
Levin said in June his group could
effectively defend the law with between
$5-$7 million, in spite of some observers
who said Marylanders for Marriage
Equality needed to raise up to $12 million.
OMalley headlined a star-studded
fundraiser gay former Republican National
Committee Chair Ken Mehlman co-hosted
at a New York City hotel in September
that raised more than $100,000 for the
pro-Question 6 group. The governor also
appeared at an Oct. 2 fundraiser with D.C.
Mayor Vincent Gray and House Minority
Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) at gay Democratic
lobbyist Steve Elmendorfs Logan Circle
home. Former National Football League
Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and his wife
Chan announced a $100,000 donation to
Marylanders for Marriage Equality during
the fundraiser that Chip DiPaula, Jr., former
Gov. Bob Ehrlich, Jr.s gay chief-of-staff,
attended alongside Mizeur and others.

experience. As the names are called and candles lit, she says she feels, so
many mixed emotions a lot of fabulous comes into my heart just hearing
those names. I dont forget any of them but to hear those names again is just a
very emotional process.
Lopez is co-planning this years event, slated for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at
Metropolitan Community Church of Washington (474 Ridge Street, NW). As
a young trans woman herself, Lopez says its important for the community to
remember those sisters who no longer have a voice its a very important day
for me. Visit theindc.org for more information.
Lopez, 21, grew up in Washington. She previously worked at Transgender
Health Empowerment but now volunteers there since she couldnt be both a
client and employee. She started earlier this year as an intern at HIPS (Helping
Individual Prostitutes Survive) and this week became its interim ofce manager.
She has family here but is not in contact with them.
Lopez is single and lives in Deanwood. In her free time, she enjoys movies,
being social, activism, performing and me time no hair, no makeup and just
being centered.

National Chamber has
dinner tonight; local
group has expo Saturday
By SANTIAGO MELLI-HUBER
Two LGBT chamber of commerce
groups are hosting events in the District
this weekend.
The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber
of Commerce will hold its 10th anniversary
national dinner, Beyond Expectations
tonight at the National Building Museum.
On Saturday, the Capital Area Gay &
Lesbian Chamber of Commerce will hold
its rst g.life expo.
The National Dinner begins at 5:30
p.m. and includes a silent auction, dinner,
an awards ceremony and an after party.
About 800 people are expected to attend,
an increase from the 700 attendees the
previous year. Tickets for the event are no
longer available.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
will receive the organizations Pinnacle
Award, given only under exceptional
circumstances. In a press release,
National Chamber President Justin
Nelson cited Clintons 2011 speech to
the United Nations as a moment that
changed the landscape for LGBT people
around the globe. In her speech, Clinton
said, LGBT rights are human rights. The
same year, Clinton launched the State
Departments Global Equality Fund, which
works to promote the rights of the LGBT
community around the world.
Clinton is the third honoree and the rst
individual to receive the Pinnacle Award.
Previous recipients include Wells Fargo
and IBM. Daniel Baer, deputy assistant
secretary for democracy, Human Rights
and Labor will accept the award on
Clintons behalf.
Judith Light will receive the Chamber/
American Airlines ExtrAA Mile Award.
The Tony Award-winning actor is
being recognized for supporting LGBT
legislation and ghting discrimination for
more than 20 years. Light sits on the board
of the Matthew Shepard Foundation and
other LGBT charities.
Shepards family will attend the dinner,
according to Laura Berry, the Chambers
director of communications. D.C. Mayor
Vincent Gray will also attend the dinner
and is expected to declare today National
Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce
Day in the District.
This is not our annual fundraising
dinner, says Nelson. This is our annual
celebration. This really is about bringing
together our corporate partners, our
afliate chambers, our certied suppliers,
our organizational allies and our elected
ofcial champions to celebrate what weve
accomplished over the last decade.
The following day, CAGLCC will hold its
rst-ever g.life expo, slated for 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Saturday at Washington Marriot
Wardman Park (2600 Woodley Rd., N.W.).
Registration is free (g-life.eventbrite.com)
and open to the public and includes
vendors, seminars, bars and park areas.
One seminar is a boot camp to teach
businesses how to take advantage of their
LGBT certication, which the local chamber
gives to LGBT-owned businesses.
We won the Chamber of the Year
award, says Mark Guenther, executive
director of the local group. Were hoping
to leverage that notoriety at the dinner to
have people come to g.life the next day.
Guenther hopes that in years to come,
corporate partners attending the national
dinner will also participate in g.life.
The Capital-area group has close to 400
members, many of whom are participating
in a pop-up metropolis at g.life, which
includes vendors pitching their products
and services to attendees.
We want to show our vendors that
the LGBT marketplace is a very viable way
to have a great return on their investment,
Guenther says. We hope that people
who come as attendees have a great time
and learn who the LGBT friendly or LGBT
welcoming businesses in town are.
Chance Mitchell, CEO of the National
Chamber, saw the need for an economic
component in the LGBT movement when
co-founding the organization with Nelson.
If you look at what other diverse
constituencies have done, Mitchell
says, theyve really coalesced around
economic empowerment, and we felt that
diversity and inclusion has to be phrased in
that context of economic empowerment.
MARK GUENTHER, director of the Capital Area Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

SPECIAL PRE-BROADWAY ENGAGEMENT

OPERA HOUSE
Forum managing
director enjoys
behind-the-scenes efforts
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Julia Harman Cain vividly remembers
her rst encounter with Forum Theatre.
Not long after moving to D.C. in 2007,
she attended a performance of the Round
House Silver Spring resident companys
production of Stephen Adly Guirgis The
Last Days of Judas Iscariot.
It was a really, really strong production,
she says. I spent the last 10 minutes of
the play crying. And I was seated in the
front row it was a little awkward. Cain
left the theater determined to get to the
know Forum much better.
By the following season, Cain was
working as associate producer on the
companys production of Angels in
America, gay playwright Tony Kushners
Pulitzer Prize-winning opus about AIDS.
And in 2010, Cain (who is gay) was named
Forums managing director.
As managing director, Cain says, shes a
behind-the-scenes person.
She explains: My job is to help make
sure that everything is in place to make
the season go. That includes marketing,
fundraising and nance. Im responsible
for front of house, which includes
everything you experience when you walk
in the door. And operations. I call the
repairman when the copier breaks.
Forum founder and Artistic Director
Michael Dove says Theres very little that
Julia and I do that isnt collaboration. Its
much more a Venn diagram with a lot of
overlap than two sides of an organization. But
beyond her title as managing director, what
may surprise people most is that I trust her
artistic eye as much as any collaborator. She
would make an amazing critic or dramaturg
and keenly understands story. In fact, she has
even brought several plays to me that we
have produced in the past few years.
While Cain concedes being gay
doesnt have a lot of impact on the daily
mechanics of her position, she does view
the arts through an LGBT lter. In fact, she
has a little method she uses to rate the
complexity of LGBT characters in lms
and plays. Based on the Bechdel litmus
test (named for cartoonist Alison Bechdel
creator of Dykes to Watch Out For) which
rates the complexity of female characters
on screen, Cains gay version asks: Is there
an identiable LGBT character? And does
he or she talk with other characters about
something other than their sexuality?
Theater in D.C. scores very well when it
comes to plays with layered LGBT characters,
she says. And Forum in particular has an
excellent track record for producing plays
with LGBT central characters.
Growing up in Needham, Mass., (a
suburb of Boston), Cain, 27, made her
theatrical debut in rst grade as a super
hero in a 10-minute skit about recycling.
She went on to do school shows and
community theater. As a Princeton
undergrad, she majored in comparative
literature and participated in extracurricular
theater, mostly behind the scenes. (Cain
loves stage managing, but reportedly
makes a really bad costume designer.)
After graduating, rather than follow
her theater-focused friends to New York,
Cain moved to D.C. and began a season-
long internship at Woolly Mammoth
Theatre Company where she also worked
as an assistant to the companys artistic
director Howard Shalwitz. Woolly was
my introduction to professional theater,
she says. Being around Howard taught
me so much. Over 30 years, he has
created a successful company and made a
recognizable brand. Although their shows
might sometimes be way out and not well
known, Woollys audiences are willing to
take that dive with them.
Forum is a big small company and I like
that, says Cain, who lives with her girlfriend
in Takoma Park. Because were not too
big, it allows us to take risks and not deal
with a lot of red tape. At Forum, we like to
do shows that are conversation starters, to
do plays that deal with social, political and
spiritual themes, that are engaged with
contemporary life. Most political theater
has a reputation for being overly didactic.
It doesnt have to be that way.
A couple of examples supporting
Crains claim include Forums season
opener Kara Lee Corthrons Holly Down
in Heaven, the story of a pregnant, born-
again Christian teen who seeks solace from
her eclectic talking doll collection; and
Forums upcoming production 9 Circles
by playwright Bill Cain (no relation to Julia)
to be staged by Jennifer Nelson. Its a play
based on real events about an American
soldier who kills a family while serving in Iraq.
Ive always wanted Forum to be a
service organization that spoke to a diverse
community and to be a gathering place
for ideas, discussion, and discourse. Julia
brought the ideas and tools to start that
process, Dove says. Julia transformed
Forum from a rag tag group who put on plays
into a functioning organization that better
serves a community and grows responsibly.

Gay writer explores
Aretha, gays in black
gospel and more
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
In a roundabout way, thered be no rock
music without gays and lesbians.
Thats the assertion of gay New York-
based writer/historian Anthony Heilbut. In a
sprawling, juicy tome thats as gossipy and
anecdotal as it is academic, he writes in The
Fan Who Knew Too Much that there would
have been no golden age of black gospel
music (roughly1945-1960) without gays. He,
and other rock historians also assert thered
be no mainstream rock and roll without
classic black gospel inuence.
It means a lot to me that gay people
know about this, Heilbut says during a
lengthy phone chat last week. Gospel
is really the most essential American
music. Everyone sort of understands that
black church singing, its really been the
center of American singing since the 19th
century. It follows through in jazz as well.
Its a great gay contribution.
Though white and an atheist, as a teen,
Heilbut went to hear the great R&B and soul
acts of the day at the Apollo in New York. He
was often the only white person in the room.
He got a heads up from the ushers.
I think they kind of took pity on this
lone white boy, he says. They said, if
you dig this, you aint heard nothin yet,
the gospel shows are so much better. The
showmanship, the vocalism. I came to
know almost all the singers and became
absolutely enthralled. They were so
much more dynamic than their secular
counterparts. You just cannot imagine
rock n roll and R&B without the inuence
of these singers.
Heilbuts book, out earlier this year, is
a collection of lengthy essays. Subtitled
Aretha Franklin, the Rise of the Soap
Opera, Children of the Gospel Church and
Other Meditations, it includes a lengthy
essay on how many black gospel legends
gures like James Cleveland, Clara
Ward and others were either gay, lesbian
or bi. In the essay Aretha: How She Got
Over he explores how the soul legend
in town this weekend for a concert at
DAR Constitution Hall integrated the
styles of the gospel legends she admired
as a teen into the hit secular records she
later recorded at Columbia and Atlantic.
Though Franklins gospel roots are well
known, Heilbut extrapolates the richness
of those inuences in unprecedented ways.
Other essays explore writer Thomas
Mann (The Magic Mountain), the
phenomenon of the male soprano and
late soap opera maven Irna Phillips.
One senses, however, that despite
Heilbuts many interests and decades
hes 71 of following the careers of many,
his heart is most deeply rooted in the
gospel music of his youth. He eventually
produced records for some of his favorites
and writes and shares movingly of not only
their great talent, but the hypocrisy with
which the church has dealt with often
with scorn and outright condemnation
the contributions of its gay musicians.
Typical of many of the old school black
gospel establishment, Heilbut quotes the
legendary Shirley Caesar as beseeching
the sissies and bull daggers to come
up and be saved, and warning that
homosexuals were stealing our children.
More analysis than biography, though,
Heilbut illustrates how a lifetime of
following a singer or musical phenomenon
can result in an uncanny insight that the
subjects themselves are often loathe to
discuss Franklin, as journalists and
long-time fans know, is famously prickly
and evasive on many topics.
For the record, Heilbut says Franklin
and her legendary father, Rev. C.L. Franklin
who became a mid-century legend as
pastor of Detroits New Bethel Baptist
Church were much more accepting of
gays than many others in the era.
Heilbut says Franklin, though not as
vocal as some, has made her gay support
known in several ways from singing at
a recent same-sex wedding to inviting
gay-welcoming clergy (Bishop Carlton
Pearson) to comment during a Whitney
Houston tribute she hosted during a
concert at Radio City Music Hall while
Houstons mother, Cissy, stuck with old
school, anti-gay leaders (TD Jakes, Donnie
McClurkin) at her daughters funeral.
Aretha does these little things without
really saying a word, Heilbut says.
LEFT: Vintage early 60s promo still of Aretha Franklin during her Columbia Records years. Gay author Anthony Heilbut says her underrated work there
is her best, contrary to popular opinion, which venerates her later Atlantic Records period. RIGHT: Cover art of Anthony Heilbuts new book.

Gifts for all the
gearheads on your list
By JOE PHILLIPS
Some gays and lesbians just never
outgrow their love for Hot Wheels and Tonka
Toys. And with all the awesome automotive
gifts this season, its easy to see why.
Fiat 500 by Gucci
Slightly larger than a Matchbox car, the
Fiat 500 comes in a special Gucci edition
priced at $23,500 with special
lettering on the B-pillar, double-G logos
on the hubcaps and the iconic green/red
striping down the middle of the roof fabric.
Inside, theres Gucci embroidery and trim.
Optional Gucci gear: travel accessories,
driving gloves and sunglasses.
Mustang luggage
If Guccis not your bag (pun intended),
then try Mustang luggage. Made of sturdy
polycarbonate, this suitcase has multidirectional
wheels and a liner with separate shoe and
accessory panels. At 20-inches long, its also
carry-on friendly. The Mustang logo is subtle,
but no one will miss this cherry-red suitcase at
the luggage carousel.
Ford Shelby Cobra
For road trips, theres the Ford Shelby
GT 500 Cobra a feisty Stang from famed
auto designer Carroll Shelby. This is a
no frou-frou couture car, though there is
some fancy trim-work: racing stripes on the
rocker panels, embroidered Cobra logo
on the seats and a white cue ball shifter
knob. Wickedly fast, this $49,000 muscle car
blasts from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.
Sure, the 10-speaker, 1,000-watt stereo is
impressive, but its the sidewalk-shaking
exhaust growl youll want to hear most.
BMW bicycle
The only sound youll hear from the BMW
M Bike Carbon Racer is a gentle shifting of
Shimano gears. With its carbon frame, this
$3,600 racing bike weighs just 16.3 pounds
and has a chic anthracite-colored nish, a
subtle BMW M logo on the straddle bar
and bright-red accents on the high-end Fizik
seat, Blackjack wheels and handle bars.
Camaro kiddie car
Adults wish they could t in this black
Camaro kiddie car ($360), with its real FM
stereo, MP3 outlet and impressive sound
effects. At 75 pounds, this electric Camaro
two-seater is 61 inches long by 23 inches
wide, can support up to 130 pounds and
will run for an hour on a full charge.
Chevy seatbelt belt
Yes, this seatbelt with the Chevy bowtie
emblem is an actual belt for your pants.
Its made from an authentic metal seatbelt,
measures 1.5 inches wide and ts 24- to
38-inch waists.
Audi teddy bear
The Audi teddy bear comes with baseball
cap, eece pullover, cargo shorts and hiking
boots. This is no butch Smokey the Bear, but
its great for cubs and others on your list.
Ferrari model car
Heres your chance to live like Ferris Bueller
in miniature. The 1960 Ferrari California
Spyder model car ($360) handmade with
1,634 parts is almost as good as the original,
thanks to the leather interior, carpeting and
fully workable steering, suspension, doors
and hood/trunk lids.
Honda scooter
With a top speed of 70 mph and
impressive 100-mpg fuel efciency,
Hondas new PCX150 scooter is no crotch
rocket but it sure looks like one. The low-
slung PCX150 ($3,500) is plenty nimble,
thanks to the 286 pound weight, 14-inch
wheels and superb braking.

Bi dandy shares stories of
yesteryear in new memoir
Change is good but sometimes, you have
to know where you came from to appreciate
where you are. In the new book My Husband
and My Wives: A Gay Mans Odyssey by
Charles Rowan Beye, youll see why.
Growing up in Iowa City, Iowa, in
pre-World War II years, Charles Rowan
Beye was taught to maintain a genteel
deportment.
His widowed mother insisted that all
six of her offspring dress for dinner and
conversation was never provocative.
Servants were to be ignored and children
werent allowed in certain parts of the house.
Despite that his family was well off, Beye
went to public school and remembers
feeling different from his peers, in part
because of his mannerisms and demeanor.
Still, other boys readily accepted him.
It was with one of them that Beye had
his rst sexual experience.
Though hed kissed girls and paired up
like other adolescents his age, Beye was
denitely more attracted to boys than he
was to girls. He dated girls and they loved
him for his gentlemanly ways. Young men
liked him because he was willing to do
anything they wanted, on the spot, no
questions asked.
But then, in the middle of going to
college and becoming a teacher, Beye fell
in love with a woman.
He met her nine days after his 21st
birthday and they were married four
months later. She knew he was attracted
to men and she accepted it until her death
four years after their wedding. Not quite a
year later, Beye married another woman,
then became a father four times over
while continuing to sleep with men. His
wife also had ings of her own, until she
divorced Beye in about 1976.
I always say to myself, I just cant do
gay, Beye writes. But he nally did and
in 2008, he married the man he hopes to
spend the rest of his life with.
As a look back at small-town gay
America, pre-World War II and pre-AIDS,
My Husband and My Wives is a delightful
(albeit sometimes wordy) surprise.
With droll wit and the teensiest bit of self-
depreciation, author Charles Rowan Beye
writes about a time when homosexuality
was a subject left on the highest shelf
of the deepest closet. Still, despite any
former furtiveness, Beye is unrestrained
and unafraid to tell tales; in fact, he admits
that his graphic remembrances could
make readers uncomfortable.
Hes not far off in that warning, yet
this book is such a perfect look into gay
life gone by, that you almost cant help
but enjoy it. For anyone who craves that
step back in time, if just for a peek, My
Husband and My Wives is a delightful
change of pace.

The Human Rights Campaign contributed
more than $1.5 million in cash and in-
kind contributions to the pro-Question 6
campaign. Freedom to Marry, which initially
declined to join the coalition defending the
states same-sex marriage law, said it invested
more than $200,000 into the campaign. This
gure includes the $70,000 it gave that helped
Marylanders for Maryland Equality air their
radio ad highlighting President Obamas
support of marriage rights for same-sex
couples in the days leading up to Election Day.
HRC provided so much of the
backbone to this whole effort, Madaleno
says. They were absolutely critical.
Marylanders for Marriage Equality
ultimately raised $6 million they
consistently outraised the Maryland
Marriage Alliance throughout the Question
6 campaign. The ACLU and other organized
labor groups contributed more than $1
million to Marylanders for Marriage Equality.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg
and Republican hedge fund manager Paul
Singer both donated $250,000 to the pro-
Question 6 campaign. The bulk of the 11,000
people who contributed to Marylanders for
Marriage Equality, however, live in Maryland.
We proved from going to the state
that nobody thought could win to being
the second-widest margin after Maine
among the four is pretty cool, Levin says.
And I want to really say the team that
was here through the legislative campaign
that gured out, that believed in doing
Maryland when nobody else did the
leadership of folks like Sultan [Shakir]
and Kevin [Nix], Rich Madaleno and Luke
Clippinger and all the others.
One of the proudest moments of
the campaign for Levin came when
Marylanders for Marriage Equality was able
to counter a Maryland Marriage Alliance
television ad that claimed Question 6 would
force schools to teach same-sex marriage
with their own ad eight hours later that
featured Baltimore County teacher Pamela
Gaddy. Levin showed it to McIntosh, HRC
President Chad Grifn, former OMalley
adviser Joe Bryce and his wife Kristen and
a handful of others shortly after he arrived
at a campaign fundraiser at DiPaulas home
before he put it on the air on Oct. 26.
We were ready and able to do it that
fast, versus the stories that so many other
folks who worked in California [on the
campaign against Proposition 8] told just
having to gure it out there, Levin says.
The lessons they learned they gave us and
we applied. And we took a Maryland angle
on it, putting up an African-American,
Baltimore-area schoolteacher to just go,
Thats not true, you know. When we
looked at it a week later, their argument
wasnt resonating. People just werent
buying it, according to our research.
OMalley, Levin and Mizeur all noted
Obamas public support of marriage rights for
gays and lesbians and his endorsement of the
same-sex marriage law garnered additional
support among black Marylanders.
In addition to the radio ad featuring the
president, Marylanders for Marriage Equality
also sent a mailing that contained his and
rst lady Michelle Obamas statements
in support of marriage rights for same-
sex couples to 200,000 African-American
households in the state. (Baltimore Black
Pride co-chair Meredith Moise was handing
out these iers on Election Day as she spoke
with voters outside a polling place at a
Northeast Baltimore elementary school.)
It was important that we echoed their
support, Levin says.
The NAACPs support of Question 6
and particularly television ads that featured
Julian Bond, the civil rights organizations
chair emeritus, and Revs. Delman Coates of
Mount Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton and
Dont Hickman of Southern Baptist Church
in Baltimore appear to have resonated with
voters in the predominantly black Charm City.
Question 6 passed by a 57-43 percent
margin in Baltimore City. It lost by slightly more
than 4,300 votes in Prince Georges County.
A Public Policy Polling survey in May
found 55 percent of black Marylanders
would vote for the law, compared to 36
percent who said they would oppose it. A
Hart Research Associates survey conducted
in late July found 44 percent of African-
American voters would support Question
6, compared to 45 percent who said they
would vote against it. A Gonzales Research
poll in September noted 44 percent of
black Marylanders backed marriage rights
for same-sex couples, compared to 52
percent who oppose nuptials for gays and
lesbians. An Associated Press exit poll
indicates roughly half of black Maryland
voters voted against Question 6.
Maryland Marriage Alliance Chair Derek
McCoy, Bishop Harry Jackson, Jr., of Hope
Christian Church in Beltsville and others
who opposed the law repeatedly criticized
and even mocked the NAACP, Obama,
Coates, Hickman and other prominent
black leaders who backed marriage
rights for same-sex couples in the state.
Some Question 6 opponents resorted to
increasingly homophobic rhetoric during
appearances at black churches and other
public forums in the weeks leading up to
Election Day. Pastor Luke Robinson of
Quinn Chapel AME Church in Frederick
even suggested during a sparsely attended
rally against the same-sex marriage law at a
city park on Nov. 4 that Superstorm Sandy
struck New York City less than three weeks
after Bloomberg donated $250,000 to
Marylanders for Marriage Equality.

Do the math to
reveal benefts of
homeownership
By TED SMITH
Last weeks business column in the
Blade discussed the developing status
of Washington as a hip place to live, and
certainly the increasing number of young
people between 25-35 moving here
would seem to support that.
One decision faced by these newcom-
ers (and not-so-newcomers) is whether
to rent or buy a place to live. Initially it
makes sense to rent while you get the
feel for different parts of the city where
you might like to ultimately live. But once
you decide youre going to be in Wash-
ington for four years or longer, it prob-
ably makes sense to start thinking about
buying a place even a starter place
from which you might move up.
I say four years because that is the
average amount of time it will take for
you to recoup your initial investment in
buying and later selling a home.
It will cost you around 3 percent in ad-
ditional costs (mainly for title-related ex-
penses) on top of your purchase price to
buy a home. And when it comes time to
sell, it will cost you around 8 percent of
the selling price (mainly for commission
expenses) to sell your home. So its going
to cost you around 11 percent to buy and
sell a home; assuming 2-3 percent a year
in appreciation, you should be able to re-
coup that extra cost in around 4+ years.
One major hurdle in buying your frst
place is to come up with the down pay-
ment. It is a daunting challenge to save
10 to 20 percent of the purchase price
of a home that may cost $400- 500,000.
Even saving 3.5 percent (the minimum
amount required for an FHA mortgage,
now matched by some conventional
mortgage programs) can be diffcult
when you are frst starting out in your
career. You may be fortunate enough to
have a family member who will help you
out with a down payment gift to get you
started (dont forget to get that gift letter
from them). Or you may be able to qualify
for one of the assistance programs like
HPAP, run by the city to help frst-time
and low-income buyers with their down
payments. And once youve put your
chips in the game, you get to continue
to play up as long as your stake increases.
Plus you get a nice bonus every year in
the form of tax credit for the interest paid
on your mortgage.
So lets return to the initial question that
serves as the title of this article: Should I
rent or should I buy? Lets do the math:
Lets say youre paying $1700 a month
for a 1-bedroom/1-bath coop apartment
in a Navy Yard high-rise. In the course of
four years, youd pay $81,600 with no f-
nancial advantage to show, not even a tax
credit. With a purchase price of $239,000
for the same unit and a 20 percent down
payment (to avoid Private Mortgage In-
surance) and a current interest rate of 3.5
percent, you would pay $1772 a month for
principle & interest, coop fees (including
taxes) and homeowner insurance. In the
course of four years, youd pay $85,056
$3456 more than renting, but conser-
vatively assuming 2 percent appreciation
per year, your initial investment would
be worth $259,000 and you would have
paid off $15,479 from your mortgage, so
you would have accrued $35,479 in eq-
uity. Plus you would have received a tax
credit for $25,733 in interest payments,
which at a 22 percent tax rate would give
you credit for $5,661. So, even counting
the fact that you would have paid $3,456
more by buying, you would have earned
$41,140 in equity gain and tax deduc-
tions, for a net gain of $37,684.
Of course, as they say in automobile
ads touting the fuel effciency of a certain
vehicle, Your mileage may vary. And in
the case of considering whether to buy
a home, you should start by consulting
a mortgage professional who will help
evaluate your situation and mortgage-
readiness. But when you are ready to buy,
a home continues to be one of the best
investments you can make, especially
over time and in spite of periodic market
adjustments like the one were just recov-
ering from. And unlike stocks or other in-
vestments, you actually get to live in this
one while your investment appreciates.
Happy hunting.
