Keeping the Group Connected
Issue 1
BY BEN KING
Saturday 29th October saw Queniborough Cub Pack take part in the Charnwood District Swimming Gala at Loughborough Leisure Centre. Cub Packs from Anstey, Bradgate, Mountsorrel, Quorn, Rothley, Sileby, Syston and Wolds competed alongside Queniborough in a bid to be crowned the champions. The seven Cubs from Queniborough were among the other fifty Cubs from across the district. They participated in different races such as, Front Crawl, Back Stroke, Relays and Hook-a-duck collection race in 3 categories, 8, 9 and 10 year olds. Redd, from Cubs said: Im not confident, because Ive only just turned 10. I havent been practising either. We are not losing or winning so we are doing not bad. The crowd and cubs alike were very excited and cheering their friends and children. Once they completed their race, they collected a ticket if they came 1st, 2nd or 3rd, and took it up to the scoring table to be added to the final score. The Leader, Chris King, said: I dont expect Queniborough will win. The top swimmers for Queniborough were Mackenzie, 8, who was the only Queniborough Cub to come 1st, in the Ball Push with Nose race, his brother Brandon, 9, who came 2nd in front crawl and back stroke and Jaydn, 9, who came 2nd in front crawl. Queniborough also came top in the Mat and Rope Relay. Continued on Page 5

REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

On Sunday 13th November, all the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts joined in with the rest of the village to take part in the annual Remembrance Day parade. This is where the village takes time to remember those who fought for our future in the First and Second World Wars, and also in the more recent wars. They set off the parade at 10.00am and marched up the village to the Church, stopping at the Royal British Legion on the way to pick up the War Veterans. This was then followed by a short service by the War Memorial where a Beaver, a Cub and a Scout laid poppy wreaths along with other 1 organisations from the village. Continued on Page 4

SECTIONAL NEWS
The Beavers have had a busy month this month, taking part in a variety of activities. First of all, they took part in the Fitness badge, and did various sporty activities. We then held a Halloween Party, with various ghoulish activities. We also held our very own Bonfire Night, before the real thing took place the following Saturday! And finally, we did a Spotty Night in aid of the Children in Need charity. Firstly, the Cubs have been having an Explorer helping out called Charlie, for his Duke of Edinburgh Award. Next, the Cubs held their annual Halloween th Party on Wednesday 26 October and took part in various games and had party food. It was a fun evening for all and Cubs came dressed as skeletons and vampires and had a feast of ghoulish food. They played games in the dark and tried to eat chocolate with a fork and spoon which is a lot harder than it looks! The Cubs also made their annual Guy Fawkes for the Village Competition and came 3rd, the Guy looked like a cross between a girl and a clown! The following week they were practising their parading ready for Remembrance Sunday, making sure they were all in line and looking their best for representing the Cub Pack to the Village!

GENERAL NEWS
REMEMBERING THE FALLEN
Continued from Front Page They then went into the church for the Remembrance Service led by Revd Lorna Brabin-Smith. She spoke very thoughtfully about soldiers who died in the wars. We then marched back up to the Village Hall, where Colonel Murray Colville, dismissed the parade, and thanked everyone for a wonderful turnout and they should all be proud of themselves. It was a great day, with great weather and everyone should be very proud of themselves!

CUBS RUNNERS-UP AT DISTRICT SWIMMING GALA

Continued from Front Page The normal relay had four of the Cubs doing back stroke, breast stroke, front crawl and freestyle. The Hook-a-duck collection race had six of the cubs collecting the objects from the pool with a fishing net in a relay-style race. The parents and guardians could watch their child swim from the viewing room, which was in fact, a therapy room! The final placings consisted of Wolds 3rd, Queniborough 2nd, and Rothley 1st. All in all, the Cubs had a brilliant time and was enjoyed by all.

TOP OF THE MORNING

On Saturday 12th November, Queniborough Scouts held a Table Top Sale at the Village Hall. Stalls on show included books, toys, Christmas items, knitting, clothes, DVDs and kitchenware to name but a few. Event Organiser, Colin Graham, said at the start: I think it will go quite well. Theres a good queue of people outside already. The usual people have come to support us. A good hundred people came through the doors and showed their support for the group. Twenty-one tables were sold altogether and some did better than others. Stallholder, Ben King, thought his stall couldve done better: I think this morning has been quite slow for me. I havent sold has much as I thought I would. Hopefully it will pick up later. The low amount of purchases on the stalls, is mostly likely due to the recession, but they certainly did well, considering there was a similar Table Top Sale on in Rearsby. Colin predicted that we had raised about one hundred pounds from the morning, including money raised from selling teas, coffees and squash and an entrance fee. Tables were charged at six pounds each and entry was fifty pence. We hope there will be another sale on in February with a Valentines Disco, which unfortunately had to be cancelled his time, due to lack of tickets being sold. All in all it was a good morning and of a moderate success, which everyone seemed to enjoy.

GROUP EXECUTIVE NEWS

NEW LEADERS ARE NEEDED
Leaders are in short supply at Queniborough, it is announced. Cubs especially, as Baloo is not always able to make it because of work commitments. Scouts also only have two full leaders at present and the Group is always looking for more adult volunteers, even if it is just helping out every week. As the numbers in the Group are increasing, it is more important than ever that the Group recruit more adults to support the growing demand for places in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and to make sure the Group is secure in the long run. We are primarily recruiting for Cub and Scout Leaders, however the Beaver section has the most numbers, so leaders will be needed there too! If you can spare just a few hours each week it could make all the difference to the success that the group has. Thank you very much! 4

AWARDS EARNED
Queniborough Scouts Michael Allsop and Ben King have recently achieved the highest awards possible for Scouting and Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. They have achieved the Queens Scout Award and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Michael has been up to St. James Palace to collect this Gold Award, whereas Ben is still yet to go. They will both be participating in the annual Windsor Castle parade next April with hundreds of other newly appointed Queen Scouts. Well done to them both!

GROUP EXECUTIVE NEWS

BY BEN KING
The numbers in the Group are on the rise, it was announced at the last Group Executive Committee Meeting. Beavers have 20, Cubs, 14 and Scouts have 9 in the biggest rise in Group numbers in the last four years. Only two years ago, the Group was struggling to top the 30 mark, needed for the group to be viable. This goes to show that the effort put by in the leaders and members of the committee can be very rewarding and are worth it in the end. The Group certainly has been very lucky in this respect, to be able to have kept going for so long.

This could be your advert!

GROUP NUMBERS HIGHEST FOR FOUR YEARS

This hopefully signifies a new era for the Group and will lead the way for more young people to join up and have fun! But with more members, more leaders are needed (see below), and hopefully this will encourage people to step forward and volunteer. We are now looking forward to the next year and hoping more 6-14 year olds will join the villages 35 year old association and keep it in the village for another 35 years!

A WIDER VIEW
On Saturday 19th November, Chief Scout Bear Grylls attended an Acitivity Day at the National Space Centre along with 1000 other Scouts from the county. Activities included science experiments, a Mars Rover Challenge and a Jedi training school alongside the usual attractions at the centre. Bear said about his visit: It was great to visit Scouts across the East Midlands. At every event I went to, I met young people taking part in the adventure that Scouting provides. Its crucial though that more adults sign up as volunteers, to ensure that all young people have the opportunity to join. The tour is part of his mission to encourage more adults to

volunteer for Scouting, as well as celebrate the important role of Scouting in Leicestershire and the UK as a whole. The Chief spent nearly ninety minutes touring various areas of the Space Centre, meeting and interacting with as many Scouts as possible, even joining in with a lightsaber training school. The weekends event showed what Scouting is all about, offering hundreds of young people the opportunity to take part in adventure in the company of peers and trusted adults. Even though Queniborough werent there, we hope they had a good, and hopefully, we will be there next time the Chief Scout is near to home!

As you are probably all aware the County has grown year on year and is currently the fastest growing County in England, a great success for us, but this success is why we need to fill these vital roles. For Leicestershire to continue to grow and offer the quality of quality Scouting we do, we also need to offer the support to our Leaders so that we can continue with our growth. We are looking to find people with the drive and enthusiasm to join the County Team to help support our Leaders (who are doing a fantastic job) so we are looking for: County Quartermaster Assistant County Commissioner for Scouts County Scout Active Support Manager County Training Manager County Trainers If you would like more information about the roles please contact me for informal chat and a role description. GROWTH IN COUNTY, NOT JUST GROUP

BY BEN KING
There has been a major increase in numbers, not just in our Group, but in the whole of the County, Leicestershire Scouts have announced. Combined adult and youth membership in the County now stands at 8019, making Leicestershire the fastest growing Scout County in the country for the year 2010-2011. In the UK as a whole, 4,330 girls and 3,796 boys have joined the movement and total membership in the UK has now passed half a million, standing at 507, 867. Bear Grylls, Chief Scout, said: Its great to see that more and more girls are signing up to Scouting and that the Movement is continuing to grow as a whole. Being a Scout represents all that is great about life: adventure, life skills and friendship and it is no surprise that so many girls are wanting to be part of that. Its absolutely crucial though that more adults sign up as volunteers as well, to ensure that we can keep up with the huge demand. The growing number of people wanting to join Scouting means that the waiting lists for places remain at an all time high. Byron Chatburn, County Commisioner, admired the work of all the volunteers and support that makes Scouting in Leicestershire happen, saying: We should all be pleased and proud to be part of an organisation that so many people want to join. On a weekly basis leaders are providing a programme Everyday Adventure that Young People want to take part in and supported by you and your teams they are enabling even more to participate in the opportunities that Scouting offers. Thank you for everything you have done to achieve this and please make sure that everyone in your District/team knows that they are all part of a great success story!
