Can you help

with our building
work?
We need your support to help pay for the refurbishment of
CDA. Can you help with a donation?
so we have a building that
Cambridgeshires deaf
community can be proud. We
will be able to use the building
for more events for deaf people
and rent it out to other groups to
make more money for CDA to
spend on services for deaf
people.

Work has begun on our building

in Cambridge to bring it up to a
good standard. The work needs
to be done as there is damp
around the building, the floor
was dangerous and toilets in a

poor condition. The wheelchair

lift was also unusable by some
of the larger wheelchairs and
the front door inaccessible to
wheelchairs.
Now all that is being corrected

Please see the donation form at

Big Thank you to Jamie Billam

Jamie Billam, Community
Manager, is leaving CDA after 15
years of service. Jamie will
continue to teach sign language
and deaf awareness in
Cambridgeshire.
Here are some pictures from his
leaving celebration at
Peterborough Drop in on
Wednesday 5th November.

Thank you and good

luck to Jamie from
everyone at CDA

We will miss you Jamie!

It is with sadness that we have
said goodbye to Jamie. He has
looked after CDA for 15 years and
deserves his retirement.
I want to take this opportunity to
say a big thank you from all of the
trustees for all of his hard work
over the years. We will miss you
Jamie.
As many of you know Andy
Palmer has been covering his role
and he will be continuing to cover
until we have finished recruiting a
permanent replacement.

Johns History Visit

BDA Heritage Officer, John Hay,
came to Cambridge Deaf Club
on Saturday 18th October to see
if we could help him identify
some of the faces in the BDA
film archive.
BDA are working on a project to
identify the hundreds of people
on the old film footage from the
archive and John said the visit to
Cambridge was worthwhile as
some new people were identified. It is all part of a lottery
funded scheme to preserve and
understand deaf history.

Some people may already know

John Hay from his time presenting BBCs See Hear.

visits to Cambridgeshire.

Hundreds attend
Debbie Powell
Funeral
Deaf people from across
Peterborough and
Cambridgeshire attended the
funeral of Debbie Powell who
died from cancer at home on
October 1st.
Debbie was a volunteer and a
great friend for CDA and
established the popular coffee
mornings in Peterborough. She
met many people through her
work as a sign language teacher
and kept many friends.
The church was full with around
200 mourners. Gifts in Debbies
memory can be made to the

I went to visit Civray with a group

the twin town with Downham

were deaf so we were able to

Peterborough
Deaf Club get
knitting
In August Peterborough Deaf
Club met at Ferry Meadows for
their annual
BBQ. The question of 'how many
men does it take to start a BBQ'
is answered in the photos.
Knitting in September was good.
Thank you to David and Rita for
all of their help showing everyone how to knit. We especially
loved the fancy headgear that
they had made themselves to
show everyone.

Janet and Simons

Congratulations to Simon and
Janet on the birth of their

Everyone loved seeing her at

New CDA
Program assist
deaf people
with cochlear
implants
CDA have launched a program
to assist cochlear implant users
practice their speech.
Cochlear implant users need the
chance to practice their speech
but sometimes this isnt
possible to do at home.
CDA have recruited and trained
a volunteer to provide speech
training support to Simon
Richardson from Peterborough
via Skype a few times a week.
The sessions only last about 15

minutes and can be done from

home for the volunteer and for
the deaf person.
So far things are going well with
Simon reporting he is more
confident and the volunteer
learning some new sign language
from Simon.
If all goes well, we will be
expanding the programme next
year and looking for more
volunteers and more deaf people
with cochlear implants who
would like more speech practice.

As the project is being done by

Skype it is possible to provide
support to people anywhere in
the UK.

Sign Health are coming to Cambridge

Watch out for

to talk about deaf health report

criminals on

National charity SignHealth will be coming to Cambridge to talk

about health issues for deaf people and people who use sign
language. They are coming to talk about their report called Sick Of
It which looks into how the health of deaf people can suffer because
of access problems and take questions.

They will be at CDA on Wednesday 19th November from 11:30am

until 2:30pm. Afterwards, we will be having a farewell celebration for
outgoing Community Manager Jamie Billam.

Deaf football
sessions in
Cambridgeshire
There are now two places to go
and play football for deaf people
in Cambridgeshire.
Session run every Friday at 7pm
with Peterborough United at the
Nene Park Academy. The
sessions are run by PDDCS with
Peterborough United with Coach
Steve Long. There is an
interpreter present.

The Peterborough United Deaf

Team have their first game on
19th November at 7pm at their
new home ground at Northern
Star Football Club in Dogsthorpe,
Peterborough.
Eventually the team will enter
into national deaf competitions.
There are also deaf football

sessions at Cambridge Regional

College on Thursday evenings
from 6:15pm from 6th
November. These sessions are
being arranged with
Cambridgeshire FA and young
Cambridge based deaf
footballer Will Rolls.

Deaf Boxing

Facebook
CDA would like to warn deaf
people in Cambridgeshire about
criminals on Facebook
pretending to be deaf people.
There have been cases recently
of deaf people making friends
with people on Facebook who
have then asked for money.
In once case, the fake person
was pretending to work with
the BDA and eventually asked
for money to be sent.
It is important that users of
Facebook are careful about
people they make friends with
and do not actually know and
never arrange to send money.
Tips for safety online

Deaf-friendly boxing sessions

are now available in
Peterborough. The sessions are
on Wednesdays at Middleton
School and on Fridays at Jack
Hunt School in Peterborough.
The classes are run by ABA
official coaches Sam Stockwell
and James Chappell.

Always make sure that

you know the person
before becoming friends
