TIME
IN
Graphlike diagrams next to the flashbulbs tell at a glance 3 key facts about the specific flashbulbs in terms of light intensity (Lumens):
a word about
lighting diagrams
1. 2. 3.
How rapidly the lamp reaches its peak intensity (indicates correct synchroni-
zation).
How much light output is obtainable.
How long the bulb remains at or near its peak (determines most effective shutter speeds).
Each chart shows simple plottings of the intensity of flash for both clear and blue bulbs. The amount oI intensity is measured in "Millions of Lumens." The time interval is in "Milliseconds" (a milljsecond is 1 / 1000th of a second).
Note: Flashcubes are not measured in Lumens, but in a unit of light measurement called B.C.P.S. which stands for BEAM CANDLE POWER SECONDS. Whenever a reflector is used as an integral part of a lamp, it js more meaninglul and accurate to rate it in B.C.P.S. than Lumens. A lumen unit is used to describe a light source where light is going ou in all directions. ln the Flashcube, where the reflector is part o.f the light source and the light is directional, we are only in.
Beam Cand le Power Seconds. Clear or blue, all Sylvania flashbulbs are coated with a thin, tough Jilm of lacquer as a protection against breaking or shattering. For clear bulbs, the coating is optically clear, wiil not affect color balance even when used with the most critical color films Jor artilicial light. On Sylvania blue flashbulbs, the coating is caretuily color corrected and balanced under the most rigid laboratory conditions. This provides maximum fidelity when used with daylight color films. When used with black and white Jilms the coating has little or no eifect on the ex. posure due to the characleristics in latitude ot the film itseif.

The charts below are a quick guide to perfect exposures when Sylvania Blue Dot llashbulbs are used. The Guide Numbers are shown opposite the Flashbulb Number and Shutter Speed-directly below the film speed for different lilm types. Rellectors: These Guide Numbers are based upon use of the reflector numbers circled beneath each flashbulb name: (1) 4 5 inch polished reflector, (2) 6y27y2 inch polished rellector,

Sylvania Blue Flashbulbs: No filter is needed when blue color Ilashbulbs are used with daylight color tilm because their color qualities match those of daylight color films.

THE CERAMIC BLUE TOP: Sylvania's famous Ceramic Blue Top ;s a flint-hard, opaque outer skin, baked'in (not just painted on) to actually become a part of the glass. The blue top decreases Iight spillover. The blue top increases lamp efficiency by shielding the lamp, boosts lamp lile by dissipating heat more rapidly than ordinary coatings.
ASI CODES: Every Sylvania projector lamp is coded with three letters assigned by ihe United States of America Standards lnstitute. This combination of letters (Jormeriy called ASA) refers to a specific type projector lamp and should be used vr'hen ordering. DOUBLE BRANDING: On some Sylvania Blue Top
projector lamps, you will find "double branding"that is, two ASI codes. This means the lamp will work in projectors calling for either lamp type.
Even
not be concerned if he receives a double.branded Sylvania Blue Top projector lamp as a replacement. The Sylvania Blue Top will work just as efficiently, if not more so.
RATED VOLTAGE: Unless otherwise noted, all Syl. vania projector lamps are rated at 120 volts. A lamp with a rated lile ol 25 hours will operate for only
15 hours (approx.) at 125 volts, with about 15% more light output and at a color temperature about 50'K higher. At lower voltages, lamp life increases,
but brightness and color temperature decrease.
v{attages. Lamps of higher wattage than recom' mended will not cool adequately, may damage optical system, motor and/or film.
IMPORTANT: A projector's cooling system is designed to operate etficiently only with specific lamp

tru-beam
Sylvania's revolutionary Dichroic Tru-Beam Projector Lamps are available in two versions-DNE and the low voltage Super Q DNF. They were developed by Sylvania for 8mm and Super 8 Movie Projectors. Their features include: Dichroic Tru-Beam ReJlector for greater efficiency, vented 2-pin base and snap-loc
socket for perfect alignment and cooler operation. Ballast fjlament insures longer life. Both the DNE and
principle to give longer lite, constant light output and true color rendition Jor the life of the lamp.

This advanced projector lamp type features a Sylvania-developed "cool light" reflector. Made of glass with a dichroic coating, this extraordinary reflector acts like a two-way mirror: beams useful light rays toward the lilm gate and sends heat rays to the rear. Just as the projector is a delicate, precision instrument, so is its "heart"-the projector lamp. And, just as the projector may fail to operate when abused, so may a bulb "blow" or retuse to work
any longer. Sylvania's engjneers examine every lamp returned for replacement and can determine by inspection why a projector lamp failed. Lamps that failed because of manufacturing tlaws are considered valid defectives entitled to replacement under Sylvania's
projector lamp guarantee. Lamps whose failure resulted only trom reaching the end of a normal burning Iife* are classified as invalid defectives and
obviously cannot be replaced. Pictured and described below are two basic types of valid defectives, as well as four examples of in" valid defeciives which show tell-tale signs of normal life. Once pointed out, the signs are easy to read. Learning them will reduce many o{ your headaches.

amplifier. Light from the Exciter Lamp (A)-light transmitter-passes through the lens (B). The lens tocuses light on the sound track of the film (C). This light passes through the sound track and into photo
cell (D)-light receiver.
The diagram below shows you in the simplest form how sound is transferred from the film strip to the
The photo cell receives sound in the form of light impulses and converts it to electrical impulses or, in other words, actual sound. These impulses, leaving photo cell, are too faint to be audible. Therefore, they pass from the cell into an amplifier which magnilies the sound to any desired audibility.

models within the group utilize the same lamp. Where one or more projectors are grouped with sev-
eral lamp types, each projector model within the group can salely use any of the lamps shown. The preferred lamp will generally be the one shown with the highest wattage. While those of lower wattage will be satisfactory substitutes, they will produce
somewhat lower screen brilliance.
