For one week of the year, the
darkness and quiet of the Pine
Barrens are replaced with the
sounds of carousels, carnival
games and the aroma of home-
cooked goodies. That week was
last week as the Pine Barrens Fes-
tival celebrated 25 years.
Its been a great success, an-
other great community-building
event, Father Andrew Jamieson
of Church of the Holy Eucharist
said on the opening night of the
festival. We just want everyone
to turn out and enjoy a great time
with their families and children,
enjoy great food and great enter-
tainment. Its a great time.
The annual festival takes place
on the Church of The Holy Eu-
charists property and continues
to be the biggest event on the re-
gions calendar. Between 35,000
and 40,000 visitors were expected
to visit this year and enjoy the
family friendly atmosphere,
while supporting a good cause.
The money goes directly to
the parish and its upkeep for the
year. Its our biggest fundraiser
for the church, Jamieson said.
We need a new roof, with the
project beginning in September,
and $70,000 is slated for that so
were hoping the festival can go a
long way in raising that.

17 percent
over last year

Crime in Medford is down 17
percent from January to June,
with 30 fewer offenses than the
same time period last year, ac-
cording to the states Uniform
Crime Reporting statistics.
The most common offense re-
ported in 2012 was theft, with 113
incidents last year and 95 this
year.
According to Police Chief
Richard Meder, UCR only tracks
very specific crimes. However, the
decline in crimes is positive for
the township.
I think its a combination of
things. One thing I ask of my offi-
cers is to be more visible, to com-
municate with residents, and that
helps to bring [crime] down,
Meder said.
Aggravated assault is down 33
percent from last year, with six re-
ported crimes in 2012 and four
this year. Burglaries didnt de-
cline as much. Twenty four
crimes were reported this year
compared to 26 in 2012.
Meder stays up to date on the
UCR, checking it each month.
As the chief, I want to see
crime coming down. Im very
happy with that, he said. UCR is
one of the few statistical docu-
ments that helps us register these
things.
The countys initiatives play a
role in the decline as well.
According to Joel Bewley,
spokesman for the Burlington
County Prosecutors Office, the
county invested $4.8 million in
New World Systems a software,
hardware, training and support
company for local government
and public safety agencies using
a federal grant in 1996.
Departments in the county
have the option of using the sys-
tem, and a majority of them do, he
said. When residents dial 911, the
system locates where the call is
coming from. The information
from the call is entered into the
system by the dispatcher and the
proper authorities are sent to the
scene. The program allows direct
communication with an officer
and mobile data terminal located
in squad cars, and departments
can look back and analyze inci-

Historic Kirbys Mill and
Museum open Sundays
Historic Kirbys Mill and Mu-

ford Historical Society.
Visitors will be able to tour the
mill, which houses the societys
collection of local memorabilia,

F
inally, nine months after Super-
storm Sandy touched ground,
New Jerseys economy is gain-
ing momentum.
A report released last week by Wells
Fargo, the states second largest bank
by deposits, says that federal and in-
surance money flowing into the state
to aid in the Sandy recovery started to
pay dividends in the first half of 2013,
and should continue to propel the
economy for the rest of this year.
According to the report, the state
added 4,200 construction jobs from
January to June of this year. The
same time last year, the industry lost
4,500 jobs.
Its a great sign for the state. Gov.
Christie estimated New Jersey suf-
fered $37 billion in damage from the
storm. Approximately 22,000 homes
were left uninhabitable and 325,000
others were significantly damaged.
Now, in the dead of the summer,
with the start of hurricane season ap-
proaching again, construction is heat-
ing up, fueling the states overall eco-
nomic recovery.
The Wells Fargo report wasnt all
peachy, though. While New Jerseys
economy was significantly better in
the first half of this year compared to
last, it still lags behind national aver-
ages. Six percent of all mortgages are
in foreclosure, the second-highest rate
in the country behind only Florida.
Housing prices grew only 2.9 percent
year over year, while the national aver-
age stood at 12.2 percent. New Jerseys
unemployment rate dropped almost a
point in the last year, and that trend is
expected to continue, but it still sits at
8.7 percent compared to the national
average of 7.6 percent.
These stats beg the questions:
Should we compare New Jersey to the
rest of the country? Or should we just
compare the Garden State to itself ?
New Jersey is a very unique state in
that its economy is fueled strongly by
two major metropolitan regions whose
city is in another state. The economy
works differently here. Employment
works differently here. Elections work
differently here. So why, then, if we
are an outlier, must we compare our-
selves to others?
For once, we need to focus on our
own recovery, and ensure we are
adding as many jobs as we can, no
matter what our stats look like com-
pared to every other state.

The following is on file with the Med-
ford Township Police Department:
Medford Township Police announce the
arrest of seven subjects involved in three
separate home invasions and the attempt-
ed murder of a quadriplegic Medford man.
On July 18, police arrested 18- and 19-
year-old suspects of Mt. Laurel, for con-
spiracy to commit murder, criminal at-
tempt to commit murder, armed robbery,
burglary, theft and weapons offenses.
The arrests were a result of a five-
month investigation, which began on Feb.
24. At approximately 2:11 a.m,. four indi-
viduals entered the home of the 47-year-
old disabled man while he slept.
The four suspects intended to rob the
victim, however two of the suspects had
also conspired to kill the victim.
One of the suspects was armed with a
knife and attempted to kill the victim as he
slept in his wheelchair. However, he was
stopped by one of the co-conspirators be-
fore injuring the victim.
On May 7, at 2:55 a.m., the four men re-
turned to the victims home and stole a
safe containing jewelry, knives and person-
al documents.
The investigation revealed that one of
the suspects had orchestrated these three
incidents, recruiting associates to commit
these crimes.
The orchestrator was lodged in Burling-
ton County Jail in lieu of bail set at
$855,000. One of the Mt. Laurel suspects
was arrested at his home and lodged in
lieu of bail set at $800,000. Police seized his
2010 Dodge Challenger used during the
commission of the crime.
The second Mt. Laurel suspect was ar-
rested in Ocean City, Md., and awaits an
extradition hearing.
The 20-year-old suspect of Moorestown
was charged and released.
The last remaining three suspects, of
Bellmawr and Philadelphia, were charged
and are currently wanted by police.

both within and outside the
parish. The parish maintains all
the booths, and the only part of
the event run by an outside
source is the rides.
Majestic Midways continues
to be great in providing the rides,
and they draw a lot of people to
the festival, Jamieson said.
After 25 years, the thought may
be that not much would change
year to year, but for the first time
a classic car show was part of the
celebration.
We had more than 70 cars and
15 monster trucks, Jamieson
said. We hoped it would bring
more people, come see the cars
then check out the festival or get
something to eat. Were definitely
happy about it being a part of the
event.
Its not all funnel cakes and
games as each night of the festi-
val is dedicated to honoring a Vol-
unteer of the Year from the differ-
ent Pineland towns in the area.
Each town nominates two peo-
ple and the festival committee
makes the selection of who is Vol-
unteer of the Year, said Mary
Fischl, chairperson of the Cul-
ture and History and Nature Re-
sources tent at the festival, in ad-
dition to organizing Volunteers of
the Year. The award is given to
someone who has made an out-
standing contribution to the cul-
ture, history and natural re-
source of the Pine Barrens, Fis-
chl said.
Bob Egan was the recipient of
Medfords Volunteer of the Year
award.
Egan has served in leadership
roles for the Medford Youth Ath-
letic Association for the past 10
years, including the role of vice
president.
Most recently, Egan has served
as the president and founding
board member for the Medford
Celebrates Foundation.
The Medford Celebrates Foun-
dation has funded the Fourth of
July fireworks display in recent
years. The Foundation hopes to
fund other Medford community
events in the future.

We view it as a very effective
program, he said.
According to Meder, the infor-
mation used from New World Sys-
tems assists in identifying crime
patterns in Medford that may be
similar in other towns.
It makes information in other
towns a little more readily avail-
able. For instance, we can talk to
Evesham if something pops up,
like a rash of burglaries, and talk
to them about how to stop it,
Meder said.
In addition to New World Sys-
tems, the department utilizes
Facebook to provide information
to residents.
One of the things we have
done is maintain a good relation-
ship with homeowners alliances
throughout the township, Meder
said, noting the Facebook page
and email alerts to the alliances
notify them of crime patterns. If
we see something thats affecting
the township, we to try make peo-
ple aware of whats going on so
they can be more vigilant.
Meder suggests simple solu-
tions to preventing crime, includ-
ing locking doors at night or when
residents have left the property.
Medford is a safe place, but
people need to be cognizant of
their homes. Something as simple
as locking your doors can deter
[criminals], Meder said. We
want to have a better relationship
with the public to communicate
with them. Theyre our eyes and
ears.
There are 28 officers on Med-
ford Townships police force. Ac-
cording to Meder, at the height of
employment, there were as many
as 49.
Meder recently applied for a
grant that would allow the town-
ship to hire more officers.
The council has allowed us to
apply for the grant. Hopefully it
will work out, Meder said.
Meder wants to remind resi-
dents there are multiple ways to
report crime in Medford, includ-
ing the citizen tip hotline, the
Facebook page, the website and a
generic email to which they can
send in anything.
