Thevasam (with Homam )
'Thevasam' is nothing but 'Srardham' or ' Annual memorial ritual' performed for the deceased.
According to the scriptures, a Thevasam is to be performed with Homam. This pacifies the deceased in 3 ways. Firstly, through the 'Agni Swaroopam' (Homam). Secondly, through the 'Brahmana Bhojanam' (Feeding the Priests) and thirdly, through 'Pinda Pradhanam' (offering pindams or cooked rice). Mostly, offerings such as raw rice, raw banana with pulses, jaggery and 'Dakshinai' (cash) are given to the priests instead of Bhojanam. Thevasam can be performed at the Temple with or without homam. Arrangements can be made in the Temple for those who wish to feed the priests (Bhojanam) or the devotees (Anna Dhanam) at the Temple.
According to the ancient sages, the phonetic sound and vibration of 'Veda Manthras' (verses from Vedas) is absorbed by 'Dharbham' or 'Dharbai', a holy grass, through the tips. It only grows naturally at selective places and available almost in every State in India and in Bali, Indonesia. 'Darbai' cannot be kept for more than six months as it loses it value and the power of absorbing the vibration of Veda Manthras. 'Dharbham' cannot just be plucked straight or cut on any day. There is a specific 'Slokha' that is to be recited before cutting it. It can be cut only on the day next to 'Pournami' (Full Moon day ) known as Krishna Paksha Pradamai. A Dharbham without its tip portion is not to be used for making "Pavithram" or the ring. 'Pavithram' must be worn in the ring finger of the right hand. The movement of the right hand in any Karma around one's body at regular intervals shows that the protection is constantly happening around the doer. The count of 'Dharbham' leaves used to make the 'Pavithram' depends upon the ceremonies or rituals for which it is used. For those related to death, only single leafed Dharbham is used; for auspicious and daily routine a ring made of two leaves is used; for inauspicious but not death related ceremonies, i.e. Amavasya Tharpanam, Prayers to Pithrus (the deceased) etc, a three leaf Dharbham ring is used; and for the Temple Prayer and Pooja, a Pavithram is made by four leaves. When a fire ritual known as Agni Santana is performed, these Dharbhams are spread all the four sides of the Agni Kundam. During the Eclipse , these Dharbhams are used to cover all food items to protect them from the harmful ultra violet radiation. Whenever any function is held, "Sudhhi Punyaahavachanam". a cleansing ritual is performed. While reciting the selective versus, they hold the Dharbham bunch in their hand and place the tip point of it over the pot containing water. Thus the vibration is absorbed by water in the pot through the 'Dharbham' which is then sprinkled all over the place.
