Definitions of Specifications
Frequency Response Maximum peak to peak variation measured between any two points in the operational bandwidth at a given location in the CATV plant. The maximum allowable peak to valley variation is N/10 + 1 dB - tilt. Measured with diplex filters, a 1 dB attenuator to simulate a valued equalizer insertion loss, and an interstage pad 1S board with jumper. Minimum Full Gain Minimum input to output station gain with automatic control module set to highest output. Minimum full gain is measured with diplex filters, a 1 dB attenuator to simulate a valued equalizer insertion loss, and an interstage pad 1S board with jumper. Typical Operating Gain Minimum input to output station gain allowing for the proper reserve gain for the automatic control module or thermal network where appropriate. Typical operating gain is measured in same test configuration as minimum full gain. Automatic Slope and Gain Equivalent cable variation at the upper frequency. Slope is the amount of cable equalization provided in the amplifier. The slope is specified as the difference in gain between the highest and lowest frequencies. Internal Station Tilt Slope of the amplifier station. Noise Figure Measured for both the highest and lowest channels at operation gain with diplex filters, a 1 dB attenuator to simulate a valued equalizer insertion loss, and an interstage pad 1S board with jumper. Additional Information can be found in Section L - Glossary Hum Modulation Hum and low frequency distortions are "undesirable signal modulations" related to power line or the video vertical sync frequencies. This is caused by variations in the visual carrier amplitude at power line frequency or its harmonic. Hum modulation is measured at maximum current passing. Cross Modulation A form of distortion when the modulated video components or any video carrier of any other channel will cross modulate or couple to the video carrier of any other channel in the operational bandwidth. This appears as undesirable beats in another carrier. Measured at stated reference levels using NCTA standard methods with synchronous square wave modulation. Composite Triple Beat Composite third order distortion is the amplitude distortion of desired signals caused by third order curvature of non-linear transfer characteristics in system equipment. CTB is the ratio expressed in dB of the peak level of the RF signal to the peak of the average level of the cluster of distortion components centered around the carrier. CTB is measured with CW carriers, carrier to average CTB, unmodulated carriers on any channel. Composite Second Order Composite second order distortion is the amplitude distortion of a desired signal caused by the second order curvature of the non-linear transfer characteristic occurring in the CATV system equipment. It is the ratio, expressed in dB, of the peak level of the desired RF signal to the peak of the cluster of distortion components falling in the sideband of the desired signal at .75 and 1.25 MHz around the carrier.

Description Scientific-Atlanta offers a complete line of 550 and 750 MHz trunk stations in either push-pull, parallel hybrid (AT), feed forward, or distortion improved FT configurations. Dual pilot ACMs, status monitoring and reverse can be easily added to any station by use of plug-in modules. Fully loaded feed forward module upgrades are possible in any Scientific-Atlanta housing existing in the field. A plug-in automatic control module augments a built-in thermal slope and gain compensator. Status monitoring/reverse switching and reverse options are compatible with forward modules allowing future upgrades without obsoleting existing equipment. Diplex filters plug in, as do the stepped pads, equalizers and other accessories. Trunk and bridger module technologies can be mixed and matched for optimal system performance. An accurate switch selectable built-in thermal slope and gain compensating network provides a continuous balance temperature reference for pad and equalizer selection. Plug-in interstage trim networks facilitate selective adjustment of the system frequency response without altering the basic amplifier module alignment.

Features Plug-in passive to divide the signal between through trunk leg and input to bridger Built-in -20 dB directional coupler test points for more accurate set-up and monitoring Plug-in thermal network for temperature compensation Built-in diplex filter for surge protection and two-way operation Plug-in signal directors to allow signal flow from left-toright or right-to-left AC power directors for power pass or block from input or output Through current capability of 12 Amps in the main intermediate path Description The variable intermediate/terminating trunk module is used in the forward system to provide feeder locations between trunk or distribution amplifier stations or to terminate the trunk system where existing trunk requirements end. In the intermediate configuration, the trunk signal is passed through the module (without amplification) and is tapped off, equalized, amplified and routed to a bridger module. In the terminating configuration, the input signal is equalized, amplified and routed to a bridger module. The module is configured for intermediate or terminating operation by means of a plug-in passive device. The module is variable, meaning a plug-in passive can be plugged into the module, allowing the user to select a splitter, 8 dB or 12 dB coupler in the intermediate mode. A plug-in jumper is selected to place the module in terminating mode. This module is reversible, allowing signal directors to be positioned such that the station RF direction can be either left-to-right or right-to-left.

Description The distribution amplifier provides a variety of configurations for both trunk and feeder applications. When auto control is used, this station is ideal for fiber to the serving area applications, tapped trunk systems, local area networks, improving feeder stability, or as a cost effective substitute for the terminating bridger. The distribution amplifier is available with push-pull, standard parallel hybrid, PT parallel hybrid, standard feed forward and FT feed forward technologies. The station may be set for manual, thermal regulation or automatic slope/gain control. Housings are available in either two or four port configurations. The four port housing allows level and signal routing through plugin passive devices, mounted on the seizure boards. This reduces the need for connecting external passive devices which lowers the chance for signal leakage and cable pull-out problems. AC bypass and lightning filtering are accomplished on separate seizure boards mounted within the housing. Power passing and blocking are external to the amplifier module so that power is passed through the housing even in the absence of the amplifier module.

Description The distribution amplifier power supply module is used in the distribution amplifier station to convert station AC input voltage to a well-regulated DC voltage for station powering. The switching regulated supply provides improved efficiency over a standard linear power supply which results in cost savings in operating expense. The switching regulated supply is a constant power device, meaning that it automatically adjusts its internal operating parameters for most efficient use of different levels of voltage and current within a system. The supply automatically determines load power requirements and adjusts its operation so that only that amount of power is provided. Specifications

Description The distribution amplifier automatic control module is used in the forward system to provide carrier level control of the slope and gain circuits in the distribution amplifier module, and provides AGC systems up to 600 MHz. The automatic control module samples the band of signals of the distribution amplifier output, monitors a high-band carrier (high pilot), and provides error correction input to the slope and gain circuits in the event level changes occur. The closed loop system ensures a constant distribution amplifier output level despite changes in signal level prior to the station. It operates from either modulated carriers by detecting the peak carrier level during the sync interval or from unmodulated CW carriers. The automatic control module features excellent internal temperature stability, total immunity to adjacent channel level changes, total immunity to changes in modulation level or content, true peak carrier detection with either modulated or unmodulated inputs, and simple, accurate set-up. Description The Signal Stretcher amplifier provides additional gain for long house drops, multiple TV outlets or multiple service requirements at specifications comparable to line extenders. It is also capable of providing quality signals to small apartment and motel distribution systems. To meet a variety of system needs, the Signal Stretcher is available in one output and one-or two-way passive transmission. All versions provide nearly transparent transmission at typical house drop signal levels. They may be used at higher levels for multiple dwelling distribution systems due to the push-pull technology used in their design. The Signal Stretcher features full channel loading for the design bandwidth and is powered by a UL Listed Class II AC transformer or DC power supply that may be remotely located. DC powered units may also be remotely powered up the drop through the output port by using a power inserter (must order DC powered amplifier) Ordering Information
Description The Multiple Dwelling Amplifier is designed for high performance applications with bandwidths up to 550 MHz, for use in apartments, hotels, motels, CATV or MATV distribution networks or any other application where one-way transmission with 30 dB gain is needed. In addition, the MDA may be used as a general purpose wideband amplifier in the repair shop or as a system sweep post amplifier. The MDA is designed with push-pull hybrids which are installed in plug-in sockets to make down-time short and replacement quick and easy. A die-cast aluminum housing ensures excellent heat transfer from the active devices for lone life and reliable service. The housing can accommodate one or four output ports. To address system balancing, the MDA offers optional plugin equalizers and attenuator pads. The MDA is equipped with a UL Listed Class II transformer that is remotely located from the amplifier. Description The Super Multiple Dwelling Amplifier is designed for CATV, SMATV and MATV home run or branching systems. This twoway amplifier meets most requirements for apartment, condominium, hotel and motel distribution systems. The XMDA features the latest hybrids (push-pull or power doubling) for the maximum output with a minimum of distortions. When equipped with power doubling hybrids, the XMDA-Plus gives these added design options: system distortions can be reduced by 6 dB while maintaining present output levels, or output levels can be increased by 3 dB with no change in distortions. The SMDA may be purchased in a one-way configuration to start and then later a return hybrid may be plugged in to activate the return operation.

Features Hybrid IC circuitry for high output with low distortion Designed for critical applications requiring high gain Exceeds FCC specs for both conducted and radiated interference at full output level External fuse for ease of replacement LED pilot light Line transient protection Available in 300, 450 and 550 MHz bandwidths Description The BIDA is a completely self-contained indoor distribution amplifier designed specifically for signal distribution systems which use a "cable drop" as a signal source. Three models are available: the 5400-35 with 50 to 300 MHz bandpass, the 540045 with 50 to 450 MHz bandpass and the 5400-55 with 50 to 550 MHz bandpass. The basic amplifier is configured for oneway operation. Optional field installable modules provide twoway capability with either a passive or active sub-channel return path. The BIDA has a flat operating gain of 51 dB which can be adjusted down to 41 dB with the variable attenuator. Gain and slope controls are located on the front panel for easy set-up and adjustment. Two -30 dB back-matched test points are provided to permit testing without interruption of service. In applications where input signal levels are too high or where greater cable equalization is necessary, the BIDA can be reconfigured by using plug-in attenuators and cable slope equalizers to meet particular system requirements. Push-pull, hybrid IC modules enable the BIDA to operate at high output levels while retaining low distortion characteristics. The aluminum chassis is designed to provide excellent heat dissipation, thus allowing operation at high ambient temperatures with no degradation of performance or reliability.
